Democracy DEMANDS wisdom. History cannot be undone, books cannot be unwritten, experiences cannot be ignored. Not the official @nehgov.bsky.social account, but a collective of Hercules Mulligans. #AltGov

📣 Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. 📣 shorturl.at/UrDB7

While we await our fate, we want to keep informing the public about the amazing work that NEH has helped fund, as well as educating people about humanities in general. We've seen some fantastic books, projects, exhibits and resources floating out there. Feel free to share them here! 👇

We say goodnight with wise words from LeVar Burton: "We can't afford to sacrifice another generation of American children to bureaucratic politics. We've got to get it done. The future, the health, the life - our nation depends on it and it's just foolish to think or act otherwise."

It's been another soul crushing kind of day. So many of us affected by these cuts in so many ways. To our friends across the federal workforce, state councils, and grant awardees, we are with you all. Take time to breathe.

"Rumors swirled earlier this week that #DOGE was recommending extreme cuts to National Endowment for the #Humanities staff by as much as 70-80%. There was also talk of the possible cancelation of all outstanding grants made under the Biden administration." #NEH www.artnews.com/art-news/new...

If you can, please contact your elected reps. We know it can sometimes feel like a lost cause, but we believe that EVERY voice counts. Our friends at @humanitiesall.bsky.social have made it easy to contact: nhalliance.org/federal-fund.... We thank you all for your continued support!

If you're trying to contact any of us at NEH, please know that those of us who have been placed on admin leave are completely locked out of the systems. It looks like approximately 75-80% have been placed on leave at the moment.

We are still trying to ascertain the number of employees placed on admin leave. While not all, it is sweeping in scope.

Well, we don't think we're going to get that town hall we were hoping for. Around 11:30pm last night, DOGE sent out another round of emails. A good majority (no exact number yet) of NEH staff have now been placed on admin leave for an undetermined amount of time.

It's been a day for so many. We leave you this evening with this parting thought: "Be hopeful. Be optimistic. Never lose that sense of hope." -John Lewis

"Democracy demands wisdom and vision in its citizens. It must therefore foster and support a form of education, and access to the arts and the humanities, designed to make people of all backgrounds and wherever located masters of their technology and not its unthinking servants." shorturl.at/D652u

Groups across the country have received letters notifying them that their grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities have been canceled, raising alarms about serious harm to museums, historical sites, and a wide range of community projects.

This about sums up the day so many have had, on both sides of the coin -- grant recipients and employees. There has still been no comment from our acting chairman on an employee town hall. Crickets, we hear you. www.npr.org/2025/04/03/n...

We are on our second day of asking our acting chairman for an employee town hall. There has been NO response.

Also, if you feel so inclined, please let your elected officials know. Thanks to our friends at the National Humanities Alliance. The more we push, the more they know we're not giving up without a fight. nhalliance.org/federal-fund...

If you received an email regarding your grant, this is excellent guidance.

Sorry for the paywall. But here's the skinny on what's happening. DOGE has indeed infiltrated us. This morning, many of our grant recipients woke up to an email informing them their funding has been canceled. NONE of us knew about this. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/01/a...

We were hoping we wouldn't have to enter this space, but here we are. Our agency is currently and quietly being dismantled.
