If the courts cannot pretty rapidly step in and stop this obvious abuse of public funds to settle political scores, they won’t do a whole lot else to hold against an authoritarian state

Watching lots of hoops lately, which sometimes feels like I'm burying my head in the sand, trying to forget reality. But my recent re-read of The Joy of Basketball reminded me, "basketball is a reliable hope-generating machine that always gives us another season, another game, another possession"

Trump admin's budget would gut the Department of Housing and Urban Development, with a 44% cut in funding, reduced from $77 to $43.5 b. Cut could translate to 4 million people—living in every part of the country—losing housing assistance. Virtually every city would lose infra funding from CDBG.

“Do your own research, also we are green lighting the flow of misinformation online and defunding any efforts to study it”

Jeff Bezos, who spiked a WaPo endorsement of Harris and mugged for pictures at Trump's inauguration, wants everyone to know he does *not* bear any responsibility for this.

"The economic security of Black women is inextricably linked to the well-being of our society, and we must act now to protect it." Important and thoughtful op-ed in @msmagazine.com from my former colleague (and a current friend and research role model), Ofronama Biu: msmagazine.com/2025/04/21/g...

In a new piece in @houspoldebate.bsky.social, esteemed coauthors and I write about potential ways to reimagine outdated, inequitable parts of the housing finance system. We think about leveraging new tech + meeting the needs of a changing population: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

“The administration’s claim that this order to end #DisparateImpact liability promotes ‘meritocracy and a colorblind society’ is grossly out-of-touch with the reality for people of color, women, LGBTQ+ & people with disabilities.” #FairHousing @newsoneofficial.bsky.social newsone.com/6107629/trum...

Good god. Make introductory micro and macro graduation requirements PLEASE. At least for Treasury heads 😭

“They have less money to spend on the other thing” is typical NOT a policy goal but pretty sure it is for Trump admin

Super important work from @robertmanduca.bsky.social - how we define wealth is not a given, and it likely should change depending on the goal and subjects of our analyses 💡

Today the administration cut the funding for the Women's Health Initiative, the longest running study on women's health we've undertaken. Now the data won't be collected and a great deal of investment just evaporated. But so efficient, and oh, have more kids!

Spent yesterday celebrating my mentor - and dear friend - as he won a Teaching Excellence Award @uwmadison.bsky.social. As ever, I’m so grateful for public higher education - and its people - who support so many students and communities

"Women" were on the forbidden word list. The Women's Health Initiative helped us understand Hormone Replacement Therapy. We had this study because NIH had frequently *left women out* of their studies.

This is a great article from @hakeemjefferson.bsky.social that he should not have needed to write. I long for the day when race scholars don’t have to respond to people who have no clue what they are talking about, but nonetheless feel free to pontificate. stanforddaily.com/2025/04/22/w...

"the government is losing its capacity to measure how American society is functioning, making it much harder for elected officials or others to gauge the nature and scale of the problems we are facing and the effectiveness of solutions being deployed against them." www.propublica.org/article/trum...

This is getting fewer headlines than it should. After coming to power promising to help working people, the president is revealing his real priorities by actively making it easier for banks to rip people off.

"46% of Head Start funding goes to rural areas, often in places without any other child care option..." www.axios.com/2025/04/16/h...

NEW: A judge has paused the gutting of the CFPB; in a court filing, a whistleblower claims DOGE operative Gavin Kliger kept staff up for 36 hours straight while berating them for their incompetence in an effort to achieve the mass reduction in force by April 17. This is from @peard33.bsky.social

🗣️ BREAKING: During this morning's emergency hearing on the yesterday's illegal RIFs of 90% of CFPB workers Judge Amy Berman Jackson said to the government: “advise your client there will be an order this afternoon that the RIF will not take place”

Reuters: US JUDGE SAYS CFPB MASS FIRINGS WILL NOT GO FORWARD PENDING HEARING INTO TRUMP ADMINISTRATION'S POTENTIAL VIOLATION OF COURT ORDERS

Supervision exams cut nearly entirely, with 48/50 staff remaining in one region, the Southeast. Are the other 2 staff supposed to cover the rest of country?! Also nearly all of research and data cut, so that does not bode well for HMDA and consumer finance research writ large.

There's a hearing in two hours on the CFPB purge. Here's the latest on how the agency can't possibly carry out its duties with 1,500 workers fired, including basic things that mortgage markets rely on for actually functioning. prospect.org/justice/cfpb...

Ok so yeah, this has quickly become the #1 misunderstanding about the canceled grants the grants are not “subsidies” or “entitlements” to Harvard or Princeton or whatever they aren’t going into universities’ endowments they are competitive contracts won by these universities to do research

The CFPB reduction in force was facilitated by an appeals court ruling last week that pried open a path to fire workers after an "individualized assessment." CFPB went ahead and made that assessment to fire 1,500 workers in 4 days.

This is so heartbreaking. The CFPB does fantastic and incredibly important work for consumers. Moreover, every single person I worked with at CFPB, from examiners to researchers, cared so deeply about the bureau’s mission to ensure fair, transparent, competitive financial markets.

White House budget—a recommendation, not a law—may propose replacing Housing Choice Vouchers with much less money in state housing affordability grants. Housing Choice Vouchers are essential to reducing costs of living for millions of US families, and are already underfunded compared to the need.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about aging households. Today, the aging housing STOCK. US homes are aging but renovation financing is not accessible. We outline solutions to the problem, which contributes to institutional-ownership of homes that could be owner-occupied: www.urban.org/urban-wire/c...

Eliminating Head Start is the opposite of efficiency. These cuts will hurt kids' health and school outcomes (both short-term and long-term) and make it harder for low-income mothers to work for pay. But of course, that's the point. www.washingtonpost.com/health/2025/...

Rubio says he is deporting students for antisemitism, but its a cover for hime to pursue attacks on higher education and immigrant students. The fact that he launders his views with actual antisemites gives the game away. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/the-attack...

Just despicable. Rooting for a foreclosure crisis in broad daylight. The FHA serves homeowners across the country and is in the most stable position it’s been at in decades. We do need more rental housing - but a PREVENTABLE foreclosure crisis is not the way to get there.

Yesterday, the FHA announced that it will end the pandemic-era loss mitigation waterfall, a program that my @urbaninstitute.bsky.social colleagues estimated prevented more than 535k foreclosures. This policy would improve housing mkt sustainability during economic downturns + open the credit box.

NPEU members are coming together in preparation for May Day to build solidarity signs that amplify the message of worker power. Join us for a picnic in Malcolm X Park on April 26th. 🥪Lunch will be provided, just RSVP here actionnetwork.org/events/npeu-...

Thinking of the faculty and staff at my alma mater today! Preserving public higher education is crucial - for research and results, for upward mobility, and for state and local economies across the country. Go Badgers!

Exactly this, from @natasharsarin.bsky.social & former IRS commissioner Danny Werfel: "In other words, an extremely diminished IRS could unlock a race to the bottom and create an evasion advantage for those who are comfortable skirting their tax bills." www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...
