I love that this urban guide to Lahore (1928) had a list of the sight-worthy workshops & factories of the city, alongside mosques, temples, gurdwaras, bazaars, museums, gardens, etc. And that one of the factories worth seeing is the Mufīd-e 'Ām Press, with its litho printing, rolling, binding, etc!

I hope America is as lucky as the delta jet - everyone survives but the right wing explodes

The Times spoke to people being trapped inside a Panama hotel after deportation from the US and the individual stories of horror are almost too much to bear www.nytimes.com/2025/02/18/w...

Looking forward to speaking on my book, Pious Labor: Islam, Artisanship, and Technology in Colonial India (@ucpress.bsky.social ) tomorrow at the JNU Centre for Historical Studies seminar series!

Delightful visit to the Muslim Library in Bangalore (Shivajinagar area) last week. Wasn't sure what to expect, but found an excellent & well-organized collection of early 20th c. Urdu periodicals, including several I had been searching for! Plus a kind librarian who did a photo shoot šŸ˜‰

Traveling this weekend, so Iā€™ve just shared a Special Saturday #ScholarSunday threadā€”my 212th of great public scholarly writing & work, podcast episodes, new & forthcoming books from the past week. Share widely & enjoy, all! šŸ—ƒļø americanstudier.substack.com/p/scholarsun...

Please read and sign this petition to the AHA Council, demanding a recision of their veto of the Resolution to Oppose Scholasticide and to put the resolution to AHA's membership! www.historiansforpeace.org/2025/02/08/p...

Besides being callous and idiotic, this is perhaps the most historically illiterate argument Iā€™ve ever seen. Has this man never encountered a single book, or just likeā€¦ an older person?

WATCH AND CIRCULATE: Macklemoreā€™s a real one for this video doing what the Democrats and their surrogates refuse to do youtu.be/sn9EKC9nqU4?...

You know #EverythingHasAHistoryā€¦ but did you know that batteries have an Urdu poetic history? I wrote about it for #AHAPerspectives. Thanks @lmansley.bsky.social for the opportunity!

Entire USAID agency worldwide was deleted by a consulting government employee with no authority to do so. Itā€™s a constitutional crisis that puts US national security at risk and normies wonā€™t get this until legacy media says this clearly and loudly.

now that's how you write a headline www.nytimes.com/2025/02/05/o...

The executive branch does not have the legal right to cancel appropriated spending or eliminate agencies created by Congress. Trump and Musk are doing both. Entirely lawless and unconstitutional. The world's largest provider of food assistance shut down. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

I know the fascist parallel everyone reaches for is Nazi Germanyā€¦ but it seems pretty clear to me that President Musk has another model in mind. Consolidating all wealth and power in the hands of a tiny white elite, huh? Shocking that Apartheid Clyde would do thatā€¦

@USAID is enduring an unlawful shutdown, purge, and dismantling. Itā€™s thrown its vital work into turmoilā€”based on spurious, absurd, and willfully slanted attacks. Here's whatā€™s real: the massive and growing harm now being caused. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/01/h...

Shout out to the Bombay Jama Masjid library for being incredibly welcoming. Didnā€™t know what to expect but the librarians were super helpful & the catalogue is excellent. Among other things, it holds an collection of 19th c Urdu periodicals, beginning ~1870, especially but not only from Bombay.

My next book talk is Monday at SNDT Womenā€™s University, Bombay. Iā€™m grateful to them for hosting my research here and looking forward to speaking to students and faculty. The event is open to the public!

This scholarly cat positioned herself right in the center of the front row of my book talk at Ambedkar University Delhi today, and then proceeded to sleep through the whole thing. Damn rude! Fortunately the rest of the audience made up for it in their thoughtful engagement.

"We abandon the body and what it learns by being in the world - the physical world - at our peril." I wrote about the basements of the @britishlibrary.bsky.social, what I learned there about historical method - and why ChatGPT can only ever be garbage. šŸ—ƒ #histsci buttondown.com/surekhadavie...

Historian of fascism here. It was a Nazi salute and a very belligerent one too.

Palestinians returning home (NYT)

Fatehpuri Masjid today. Went to see if I could get info on accessing the library there. Mostly failed, got a lot of shrugs. Anyone managed to get in?

Next Tuesday at the Center for Studies of Plural Societies in Delhi, I'll be discussing my book, Pious Labor ( @ucpress.bsky.social ) with Saeed Ahmad, chaired by P. C. Saidalavi. Come chat with us if you're in Delhi! Registration here: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

Does anyone know of a student in Islamabad who might be interested in some very quick (paid) research assistance? I'm seeking a single file, approx. 160 pages, scanned (if permitted) from one of the special collections at the Pakistan National Archives. I can pay USD 20/hour for their time. šŸ—ƒļø

Left: A London Trash Fox šŸ¦Š Right: My extremely spoiled Sofa Dog, who whined and cried in desperation when I told her she couldnā€™t go join the Trash Fox.

Does this policy only impact US-based fact checking? All the reports Iā€™ve seen focus on US impact, but Iā€™m imagining a site given over entirely to Hindutva troll farms in India and other global far-right ideologies. Canā€™t forget that FB has already spurred on the Rohingya genocide in Burmaā€¦

Very grateful for several rigorous and thoughtful new reviews of my book, Pious Labor ( @ucpress.bsky.social ). In reverse chronological order: Farsana KP review in South Asian History and Culture explores the book's efforts to orient modern South Asian Islamic history towards questions of labor.

Canā€™t stop thinking about this stunning self-portrait of Kashmiri-Londoner artist Raqib Shaw, on display at the National Portrait Gallery.

AI makes things worse. AI makes things worse. AI makes things worse.

The official death toll in Gaza is over 45,000, but the true figure "is closer to 300,000," says Dr. Ghassan Abu-Sittah, a British Palestinian surgeon. "This is literally and mathematically a genocidal project." https://www.democracynow.org/2024/12/30/gaza_hospitals

Happy holidays. May you get as much rest and peace (and bits of cheese snuck from the table) as my dog.

Important work by my colleague Daniel Estrin, who found one of the most catastrophic Israeli strikes in Gaza killed more people than reported - and itā€™s been up to families themselves to record the dead. 9 nuclear families killed. one.npr.org/i/nx-s1-5227...

Has anyone made a reverse Hallmark movie where a Simple Farm Boy comes to the Big City, discovers the heartwarming Christmas magic of density & public transit, and leaves behind his farm life to make oat-milk lattes for his new High Powered Lady Executive partner?ā€¦ Iā€™d watch it šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø.

Delighted to have a piece in this bookā€”edited by @neelamraina.bsky.social and Anna Morcomā€”on craft and performance as labour. My own chapter (abstract below) asks how weaponsmiths in UP & Punjab remade their laboring lives in the wake of colonial regulatory & economic threats to their trade.

ā€œMahatma Gandhi ka havai jahazā€ (Mahatma Gandhiā€™s Airplane) āœˆļø! A short collection of Urdu poems about Gandhi and his spinning wheel, which apparently allow one to soar over the European-managed clothes factories. Delhi, 1921 šŸ‘€ . šŸ—ƒļø

Sleepy pup wishes you a joyful winter weekend šŸ¶.

This is what's so baffling about so many suggestions for AI in the humanities classroom: they mistake the product for the point. Writing outlines and essays is important not because you need to make outlines and essays but because that's how you learn to think with/through complex ideas.
