Wow so you’re telling me everyone who cheered on the Iraq war is on board with this now too? And so are the people who opposed the Iran nuclear deal and killed it? You’re kidding.

Welcome to JFK airport. You can check in but you can never leave.

2.5 hours: how long it took me to complete and submit expense reports/authorizations for professional travel related to conducting @unhresearch.bsky.social, and that's assuming that one of them isn't returned to me *again*

Adjective + solar system planet.

For secret reasons, I’m making a list of types of exoplanet. What should I add? My list starts: hot jupiters hot neptunes lava worlds Earth-like places comet-like planets planets around young stars planets around old stars planets around pulsars (eh?) 🔭 🛰️

From Kaz Gary: For Pride Month, Astrobites is interviewing one transgender astronomer every week. This week we interviewed Dr. Eliot Halley Vrijmoet, a postdoctoral fellow at Smith College! 🔭✨☄️ astrobites.org/2025/06/06/e...

Dear program director, If your honorarium is less than my childcare costs (which you also won't cover) then I'm PAYING (not to mention missing time with my family) to serve on a panel. Why the 🤬 would I do that? 🧪🔭

How bad will it be? Catastrophic. Proposed cuts to #NSF, #NIH, and #NASA will set the US R&D landscape back 25 yrs+, cause economic and job loss now, and undermine innovations to come. But, this is the WH's *proposed* budget. Speak up now before it is too late. (inflation adjusted $-s below)

The NASA planetary science fleet chart if the president’s budget is enacted.

We have NASA's proposed budget for FY26, and it is brutal to science. Earth science would be cut by more than half. Astrophysics (like JWST, Hubble) by nearly two-thirds. Full details at www.nasa.gov/fy-2026-budg...

The president's budget request for NSF FY26 is also out. It zeroes out the NSF astronomy & astrophysics and NSF MPS ASCEND postdoc fellowships. nsf-gov-resources.nsf.gov/files/00-NSF...

I'm so elated to see NSSC asking for documents (and the implication that money might actually come) that I'm not even gonna complain about the C&P and Biosketch forms. 🔭🧪😭

I dunno why people argue over the Hubble constant. Obviously it’s 1H0 🔭🧪

On X, most of my replies are blue check neo-Nazi repeating insane right wing conspiracy theories. But it’s still better than Bluesky where people sometimes give me a hard time about not using alt text.

When the Cass Review came out last year, the NYT rushed to cover it complete with post notifications. After reviews in Germany and Utah came out supporting gender affirming care for trans youth, dead silence. You can be just as biased in what you don't cover as what you do.

Dear astronomer friends, I don't know who needs to hear this, but thank your referee in your acknowledgements, even if they are anonymous, and even if you don't completely agree with them. Refereeing is a lot of work, and the least you can do is say thank you.

All NSF GRFPs to students choosing to attend Harvard in the Fall were just terminated

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. 🧪

For a sense of scale, going from 2B/year to 1B/year does nothing for the deficit. The deficit is 1.8 trillion, so this is less than 0.06% (image from reddit). You certainly lose more than that in tax revenue since most science spending gets about 8x worth of economic return.

It's 2050, large sections of the US have become uninhabitable due to pollution and climate change. CNN: Biden is old.

🚨new planet alert🚨 Breaking news from the TI-DYE survey! A super-Earth on a tight orbit spotted around TOI-2076 with a refreshed age analysis 🔭⭐️ #exoplanets Check it out on arXiv now: arxiv.org/abs/2505.06358

Check out the latest new planet from the Young Worlds Lab from @madysonbarber.bsky.social! TOI-2076e, a 200 Myr planet just a bit bigger than Earth (1.3Re). 🔭🧪🪐⭐ #exoplanet #exoplanets #tess #unc #uncresearch arxiv.org/abs/2505.06358

NSF appears to be terminating hundreds of its grants to Harvard, per internal sources at NSF and at Harvard. At least one division has had all its grants cut.

Exclusive: National Science Foundation staff were told today that the agency’s 37 divisions—across all eight directorates—are being abolished and the number of programs within those divisions will be drastically reduced.

🚨No NASA Postdoctoral Program awards will be made under the July cycle deadline 🚨 Unclear if this applies NASA wide or only GSFC. You will still be able to submit an application but it will be reviewed for selections with the November deadline. Start dates no earlier than Jan 2026.

I heard no offers from the recent March 2025 deadline either. 😞

New results from the Young Worlds Lab! arxiv.org/abs/2504.13262 So you measured a stars' rotation period using a TESS light curve, how good is it? That's the question we wanted to answer with this paper. 🔭🧪⭐🌌 #exoplanets

You don't need to worry about the 15% IDC because no more NSF grants are coming. Even if they did, your university would not accept them at a huge loss. 15% of 0 is exactly the same as 55% of 0. Science is over in the US. 🧪🪐🔭⭐
