In this week's issue, I share a little of my experience hearing my colleagues talk about the "Why" of the @chicagoreader.com — why we are here, doing this work. I also give an update on how we've managed the past six weeks, and how we're facing our ongoing challenge.

An important point when discussing local news—especially diverse voices—is that the @chicagoreader.com has long been an incubator for new journalists, providing opportunities for a wide range of perspectives in our pages.

Hey Chicago folks! If you wanna support @chicagoreader.com and enjoy a very cool event, check out this doubleheader of The Decline of Western Civilization 1 and 2 at Thalia Hall with assorted happenings Feb 23! www.ticketweb.com/event/the-de...

In my publisher's note this week, I gave an update on where we are since everything blew up. Some of the most pertinent points: “If we get another day, we’re more likely to get two. If we get a week, we probably have another. And if we are here for another month, we could make the quarter.”

if you told me 20 years ago (when i was EIC of my college's paper) that I'd be writing a publisher's note for a weekly newspaper on a Monday night... I would have laughed in your face. It was truly one of my least favorite parts of my job back THEN, and I would dread it every Monday.

We're still here, thankfully, and working on this week's issue. The @chicagoreader.com 's staff, board and community is really showing up. This week will be incredibly important to our future. Donate and share, if you can: donorbox.org/save-the-chi...

We're doing everything we can to save the Reader, including some of the hardest & most stressful work of my life. I'm alternately heartbroken & hopeful, depending on the hour. Our latest fundraiser page allows for p2p, so you can create your own message. donorbox.org/save-the-chi...

The @chicagoreader.bsky.social wall calendar is still available for purchase, for a limited time! I love this particular piece of merch (which we haven't done in a long time, if ever) store.chicagoreader.com/product/2025...

Since voting is closed, here's my annual reminder; Best of Chicago is determined by vote. No payment or affiliation gets people on the ballot as a nominee (or winner). Yes, we take ads on the ballot, to offset the cost of software & people needed for this project. chicagoreader.com/best-of-chic...

Friends, we changed how we approach our covers this year, and to highlight that fact, I made us a 2025 Chicago Reader wall calendar. it's available for sale and i hope you enjoy it as much as I do! bit.ly/3ZYlpPa

One of my favorite newer features in the Chicago Reader is Reader Bites- short writeups on dishes and drinks that have recently delighted us. This week’s: Gyro cheeseburger with fries at Baba’s Famous Steak & Lemonade chicagoreader.com/food/reader-...

Reposting as we’re in the middle of voting for Best of Chicago!

The Monday after Thanksgiving is the most Monday to every Monday.

Tomorrow will be the third consecutive day that it’s Saturday.

The Reader’s music department is, IMHO, in a league of its own. One of my favorite features is the Chicago Record Report, a monthly series highlighting some of the new local music that has caught the ear of Reader staff. chicagoreader.com/music/chicag...

Catching up with a friend at Holiday Club and I’m just delighted to see someone walk in with a copy of this week’s Reader. They just sat down at the bar and started reading.

Best of Chicago voting begins noon Monday! A reminder: The ballot and winners are determined by audience vote.

I'm on bread and wine duty for tomorrow's Thanksgiving. While I have the wine, any thoughts on where I should go in #chicago for bread for 12 people? And what bread it should be?

A terrifically detailed portrait of Kris, the kind of critic whose work made him part of the cultural firmament. Kerry went above and beyond!

Feels good to be here. My journey started as a copyeditor and page designer at my hometown daily newspaper. Joining Twitter and getting an Android phone turned me into the newsroom 'expert' on social and mobile tech, setting me on the path that led me to the Chicago Reader and beyond.
