I love love love having parks like this nearby. Also, first rubber boa of the year for me (and first in Oregon)!

The kindest person in the room is often the smartest. #Pritzker

LFG!!!!!!!

Some highlights from this week in the central hardwoods of Indiana - the summer field season has started, and I am so excited to be back!

New from me: Everything feels overwhelming. But here is a tangible thing you can do: write a comment to oppose Trump's plan to convert 50,000 career civil servants into political appointees. Deadline is May 23. Please share! donmoynihan.substack.com/p/here-is-a-...

“I asked ChatGPT-“ okay well I asked the big oak tree at the center of the woods and she said you’re a lazy dork

🧪 Ranking member Lofgren and 11 other House dems sent a fiery 7-page letter to acting NSF director today "The cancelation of these awards suggests instead that NSF is willing to apply political censorship of awards under direction from President Trump and the DOGE teenagers" Share widely #SaveNSF

People assuming that the government doesn't work is the result of ~50 years of nonstop conservative slander and propaganda with minimal pushback. Big Tech guys coming in and expecting to find massive fraud with no real value seems like a case of projection

And the bailing wire is the civil servants that work for these agencies and they are being eliminated. One of the amazing things about our country is the massive amount of public land and we treat it like a vacant weed lot, rather than the crown jewel.

This is a reminder that federal workers would appreciate you contacting your representatives in Congress to advocate for the programs and services that you value. These representatives set the budget for the federal agencies and departments.

The entire scientific division of the National Park Service is going to get laid off in the coming weeks because the DOGE dork who's actually running DOI doesn't think parks need science.

Happy #AmphibianWeek from this Cascade torrent salamander (Rhyacotriton cascadae)!

🧪 ICYMI: $25,000 bridge funding for terminated NSF grants. Major props for to the Spencer, Sloan, W. T. Grant, and Kapor Foundations for their swift action, even though we (and they) know this is a band-aid fix. Due May 30. Applications are brief: a 2-3 page memo of 6-month plans & other docs.

‘Biohazard’: Forest Service employees warn cuts having devastating, and disgusting, impacts - Government Executive www.govexec.com/management/2...

So much this. A lot of this discourse has been falling into the trap of American exceptionalism, or the idea of individual geniuses. It’s the infrastructure. It’s the pipeline. It’s the funding. It’s the replicability. It’s the decades-long investments.

The USFS-furnished snow depth webmap now leads to a 404 page and I'm hoping that's a temporary technological hiccup and not down-for-good scenario because I reference it heavily to plan my fieldwork this time of year...

Cuts to the U.S. Forest Service will have direct impacts to WV forests, including the Fernow Experimental Forest. Join Friends of the Fernow in their postcard campaign and call your representatives today to demand they protect our forests. #saveFernow #weSpeakfortheTrees

Pretend you can hear a Wilson's warbler singing in the background of these photos.

Underwater with the turtles. Normally they are very skittish but this one was just along for the ride. I swam up very slowly, all the while opening the shutter until I made this image. I backed away afterwards and we both went on our separate ways. #photography #wildlife #turtles #EastCoastKin

Being a scientist in the US right now feels like my brain is constantly running a background process of despair and grief and anger, while the front-facing part of my brain is a chronic optimist trying to focus on the work I CAN do while also dissociating from the chaos. Yes, it is exhausting.

Saw this and started thinking about how damn reckless and dangerous of a move it was for people who've never stepped FOOT into a forest to throw the land management agencies into turmoil and now I'm angry again.

There’s some inaccurate NSF information spreading and causing extra panic. New increments on existing awards are paused. But: to the best of my knowledge, drawdown (reimbursement) on existing increments is not paused. ACMS is still accessible. Could change at any moment, though. Please share.

Hoping that Congress decides to do Not This, otherwise yep, I'm cooked.

People don't know. And 10s of thousands of young people were immediately pulled off work including rebuilding after hurricane damage.

Great news. An incredible place to visit if you get the chance.

Upset about federal funding cuts in the US? Want some ideas of what to do? I wrote a long-ish blog post about it here ecoevoevoeco.blogspot.com summarizing things I learned meeting with Senate & House aides this week with the @aibsbiology.bsky.social Congressional Visits Day event.

Government cannot serve the people without people who serve.

Important to remind everyone that this is an ILLEGAL DIRECTIVE from the Executive Branch (impoundment).

Jack of all positions, capable of none.

#WithoutNSF I wouldn't have gotten my first fieldwork experience in undergrad, volunteering on a PhD student's NSF-funded project (doi.org/10.1002/ecy....). One of my first stepping stones towards seasonal field jobs and ultimately my current permanent position.
