Glad to have had final written confirmation this morning from the MCA that Oscar Charlie coastguard helicopter response times will indeed be protected, as was promised by the government in January. www.shetlandtimes.co.uk/2025/04/08/c...

Glad to join colleagues across Parliament for the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution's farming-focussed mental health training. Thanks to RABI for organising and to DEFRA for hosting - mental health is a serious issue in the farming community and so sessions like these are extremely useful.

Latest YouGov Westminster voting intention (6-7 April) Lab: 24% (= from 30-31 Mar) Ref: 23% (=) Con: 22% (+1) Lib Dem: 17% (+3) Green: 9% (-2) SNP: 3% (=) yougov.co.uk/topics/polit...

Lib Dems significantly closing the gap. Really encouraging to see Ed taking strong, clear lines on Ukraine, Trump, the EU and the environment when Reform are peddling their populist grift.

A timely evening to host the Eid celebration with the Council for Arab-British Understanding in Parliament, less than an hour after the government statement on British MPs being barred from a delegation in Palestine (organised by Caabu) by the Israeli government.

"Banning our own country's MPs is OK, actually" was not on my bingo card for the Conservative spokesperson in the House of Commons today.

Delighted to write again for the Farmers Guardian this week, on Trump, Farage - and the potential for chlorine-treated chicken to find itself on our supermarket shelves as part of a UK-US trade deal. www.farmersguardian.com/blog/4411913...

Asking the Business Secretary whether he would rule out any trade deal with the US which would allow the import and sale of food produced to lower standards - such as hormone-treated beef or chlorine-treated chicken. I was hoping for a "yes or no" answer. Seems that was too much to hope for.

We can always count on Farage to play the loyal sidekick.

Strong local champions, working hard for our communities all year round. That’s what you get when you vote Liberal Democrat.

We are proud to announce that our MSP candidate for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch is Andrew Baxter! Last summer Angus MacDonald beat the SNP in this part of the Highlands. Voters will have a choice, a hardworking local champion in Andrew Baxter or more of the same with the SNP.

While I suspect this is not actually due to the "wheat strike", spotting a bread shortage in the Westminster Tesco today seemed too appropriate to ignore.

More from the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee yesterday. The Fisheries Minister stated to us that there will be no linkage between talks on shared defence and fisheries with the EU.

Part of my exchanges with the Food Security minister Daniel Zeichner at the EFRA Committee this morning - focusing on the closure of the Sustainable Farming Incentive last month without any warning.

I am delighted to back The Food Supply Chain Fairness Bill introduced last week by Alistair Carmichael, MP, @amcarmichaelmp.bsky.social It will benefit consumers as well as farmers & food producers who all deserve fair prices! #fairprices #FoodSupplyChainFairness

An enjoyable read (I am somewhat biased as it was written by my chief of staff...) www.scotsman.com/news/opinion...

The Spring Statement was a missed opportunity. The government has chosen to continue the pain for small businesses - leaving communities facing the prospect of more closures on the high street - while putting the squeeze on many families. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

In the face of growing threats to democracies globally it would be the height of madness for any country to play politics over a vital defence pact – we surely all have bigger fish to fry. www.politico.eu/article/uk-e...

The definition of a fight in which it is a shame there has to be a winner.

Unfairness is "hardwired" into the farm-to-fork pipeline, says Alistair Carmichael, in his call for joined-up regulation "from the farm gate to the supermarket shelf" www.independent.co.uk/money/farmto...

🔴"This is one of the most stunning breaches of military intelligence I have read about in a very, very long time," www.scotsman.com/news/trump-o...

It is not often that you will find me writing in the pages of the Daily Express - but the chance to plug a better price for farm produce once again today was too good to miss.

Questioning the Foreign Secretary today in the House of Commons on the situation in Gaza. Blocking humanitarian aid is a prima facie breach of the Genocide Convention. The UK has an explicit obligation under that convention to do what it can to prevent such acts. www.facebook.com/share/v/1AL2...

Great turnout at today's event before introducing the Food Supply Chain Fairness Bill - many thanks to all MPs and rural organisations who attended.

"This is about supporting local farmers but it is also ultimately about supporting consumers too If we want strong and vibrant rural communities in this country then we need a fair deal and fair prices for farmers and food producers." @amcarmichaelmp.bsky.social

Any supermarket that thinks it can rebuild its balance sheet on the back of Britain’s farmers might find themselves in front of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee. www.independent.co.uk/money/superm...

Too often, farmers don’t get a fair deal from supermarkets. I'm proud to support @amcarmichaelmp.bsky.social and his Food Supply Chain Fairness Bill, which would strengthen the role of the Groceries Code Adjudicator to give a fairer deal to farmers and food producers across the UK.

Thank you @amcarmichaelmp.bsky.social for highlighting our report ‘Paying the Price,' where FFCC’s Charlie Taverner recommends that politicians and industry directly tackle the problem of ‘cheapness’ so that producing healthy, sustainable food is properly rewarded. Read here 👉 tinyurl.com/4scwy2f2

Delighted to support my friend and colleague, @amcarmichaelmp.bsky.social in bringing his Food Supply Chain Fairness Bill to Parliament. This is an opportunity for a fairer deal for farmers and I hope the Government constructively engages with the proposals put before them.

UK farmers are the best in the world but too often they don't get a fair price for their hard work and produce. Today I attended The Food Supply Chain Fairness Bill event. Farmers are the backbone of our rural economies and must be treated fairly so we can all have the food security we need.

Which reminds us, if you want to make sure to get in on the lovely Alistair's legendary whisky tasting, best to use whatever method of contact you have NOW so that he brings ENOUGH whisky.

Whisky.

It was great meeting with the NFU & other rural organisation representatives to learn more about the Food Supply Chain Fairness Bill, which is a 10 Minute Rule Bill being presented today by my Lib Dem colleague @amcarmichaelmp.bsky.social & show my support for fairer prices for farm produce.

Proud to sponsor Alistair's Food Supply Chain Fairness Bill. This bill would strengthen the role of the Groceries Code Adjudicator to give a fairer deal to farmers and food producers across the UK.

Delighted to have agreed the 11 MP sponsors of the Food Supply Chain Fairness Bill, from 7 parties and all corners of the UK - this map demonstrates the geographic spread of support, showing just how broad the interest is in these issues and why the government should take the campaign seriously.

An exciting delivery to the House of Commons office today - the banner for tomorrow's introduction of the Food Supply Chain Fairness Bill. Looking forward to many more photos for MP colleagues in support of the Bill!

Delighted to have the backing of the National Farmers' Union (and NFU Scotland) for the Food Supply Chain Fairness Bill - I have been enormously grateful to the farmers' unions and other rural organisations for their support and advice in crafting the Bill. www.nfuonline.com/updates-and-...

Writing in the Farmers Guardian today on the Food Supply Chain Fairness Bill I am introducing to Parliament next Wednesday - and the need to get fair farmgate prices for our food producers. www.farmersguardian.com/blog/4410765...

NEW: I am introducing the Food Supply Chain Fairness Bill in Parliament next week. It was a major plank of my election campaign last year to reintroduce legislation in support of fairness for farmers and food producers – so I am glad to deliver on that now. www.farmersguardian.com/news/4410689...

A good day to revive this Scotsman column from 2023: "The First Minister has been electorally successful – it would be absurd to deny it – but if you believe that politics is just about winning elections then you have lost sight of what politics ought to be about." www.scotsman.com/news/opinion...

What we are seeing off the north-east coast of England is a graphic reminder – if it were needed – of what can go wrong when shipping vessels collide. We cannot afford another Braer disaster in our waters, in the Northern Isles or anywhere else. www.shetlandtimes.co.uk/2025/03/11/m...

🏦This week, during a debate in the House of Commons, Alistair Carmichael MP echoed our call to resolve the three-year impasse over the 💷£2.5 billion in Chelsea funds. These funds remain frozen in a UK bank, despite their potential to support reparations for survivors of the war in Ukraine.

As Nigel Farage speaks about Russia and Ukraine in the chamber, Scottish MP Alistair Carmichael says "Nyet/нет" behind him
