When people in Argentina, Chile, Peru, & other countries in LATAM were ā€œarrestedā€ by dictatorial governments & no one could find them, lawyers filed *habeas corpus* to try find the disappeared. Thatā€™s the legal recourse Mahmoudā€™s lawyer is using. I want that to sink in so u know how bad things are.

This is a political arrest. Mahmoud is right now a political prisoner of the U.S. He has a green card and his spouse is a citizen. This is what happens in *d!ct@torships*.

Please, help us find Yecid!

Dear all, my friend and professor Yecid Ortega has been missing since February 15. We knew he was in Munich, Germany for a conference, but he never made it back to his work in Belfast. Please, help us find him! #academia #missingperson

I remember Burawoy @ASA 2023 co-leading an unprecedented workshop on labor organizing in unis. Thatā€™s who he was for us that day: the ā€˜big nameā€™ sociologist who knew his job was to create space for new sociologists and a new sociology, one thatā€™s global, political, & w/ integrity. Burawoy Presente!

šŸšØ Today Target said it will end its three-year DEI goals, stop reports to external diversity-focused groups like the Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Index and end a program focused on carrying more products from Black- or minority-owned businesses. You guys know what to do?!

Here we go. This is a terrifying mess. Friends, organize locally: volunteer, have convos with friends, read & watch stuff together, join mutual aid networks. Letā€™s survive, BUT together.

Cheers to being 36 years old and starting my 1st job as faculty. Thereā€™s so much to do and say right now, but here I am, nurturing what would make this work possible. Thanks for the love and messages šŸ’š, esp @tylerjbateman.bsky.social who made the day v. special.

Last week of teaching and working at the University of Toronto, saying goodbye little by little to the life we built here with our Latinx family, our union comrades, & sociology colleagues & students. Weā€™re so lucky to have shared and learned from them all these years. Your love is coming w/ us!

Iā€™m back here for good now cuz the ex bird is done to me. Let me introduce myself. Iā€™m Andrea and I recently got my PhD in Sociology from the University of Toronto. Iā€™m joining the Soc & Crim dpt at Uni of New Mexico-ABQ this January 2025. I do work on the dynamics & politics of violence in LATAM.

In the current context, Iā€™m hopeful to share that I got an #ASA Community Action Research Initiative Grant. The grant funds our photography community-based research in #Peru on children & youth understandings of place-making & autonomy amidst the constraints of violence.

1st ā°here: I share my latest interview for @uoft.bsky.social magazine on my most recent publication in Gender & Society. The paper uncovered the narratives used by Canadian Police to justify & dismiss violence against Indigenous Women. magazine.utoronto.ca/research-ide...
