I have found one of the best organisms I have ever seen. Hololepta plana, which I have christened the Stupid Flat Idiot (intended affectionately, as one might refer to a sibling). Halfway between a beetle and a credit card. A dizzyingly wafer-thin beetle - like it's been run over in a cartoon.

The Composers' Estate in Elstree, Hertfordshire. The smaller roads also include a Britten Close and a Walton Terrace. Unfortunately, the road layout means there's no way to get to Schubert Road without being driven round the Sullivan bend.

A privilege to have known Bojan Bujić. A gentle man and a scholar of penetrating intelligence

The Welsh Government has taken emergency action to head off the imminent existential danger to its entire university sector. Questions: (1) Will the other UK nations do the same? (2) What on Earth do they do next? ÂŁ19m is very small when Cardiff University alone brings in ÂŁ650m per year.

In Oxford tonight? Come to the Holywell Music Room at 8pm to hear this fantastic programme of incredibly varied choral music, from the Renaissance to today. Love in many different guises depicted.

A super programme of extremely varied and unusual music, and definitely not about love in any soppy "hearts and flowers" sense! It would be great to see some of you Oxford music-lovers at the Holywell Music Room on Saturday night.

I did my PhD at Cardiff University. The support and opportunities which I received made me the researcher and university teacher that I am today. It is heart breaking to think of this world-leading department being under threat. Please sign if you are able: chng.it/yYTTDg7wvD

Music under fire again. And I can tell you from experience that consultation is another word for fait accompli. Immense sympathy for and solidarity with colleagues there.

OTD in early British television: The whole of the afternoon schedule on Monday 24 January 1938 was occupied by a presentation of act 2 of Richard Wagner’s music drama Tristan and Isolde. www.illuminationsmedia.co.uk/otd-in-early...

Oxford University Press will be awarding as many as 10 ECRs the opportunity to publish their first book in fully open access as well as in hardback. Today the website was revised to make clear that independent/unaffiliated scholars are eligible. Deadline March 3. academic.oup.com/pages/early-...

During our redundancy consultation, as well as coming up with other constructive ideas for how the university might hold on to me and my research, I pushed hard for the launch of MRes programmes. I knew there were people out there who would be interested in taking a short research degree with us...
