This infantile obsession with “respect” is a characteristic of gangsters and fascists. They can’t earn respect so they try (and fail) to command it.

Buy a custom domain address so correspondents will think you’re Canadian (presumably not American)! Image contrast: Canadians dress well & have windows, not-Canadians are slobs w piles of random paper. (Nb having .ca email does not in fact make you Canadian, proudly or otherwise).

I can’t say how accurate these scenarios are, but this seems to validate the idea that even the biggest oil sees the writing on the wall re decreasing demand for fossil fuels. Another good reason to not sink public Canadian money into hyping up a sunset sector. Time to change.

I tried to leave a message at @daniellesmithab.bsky.social ‘s number abt the bribery & corruption scandal, with her office pressing #AlbertaHealthServices for $$$ sweetheart contracts. Imagine my surprise that her office no longer accepts voicemail. Good way to not hear from Albertans.

Excellent advice. I’ve used it often: “Hi, xxx, quick follow-up to our discussion earlier. Just to confirm, you told me …etc etc. If there’s anything here that I might have misunderstood, please let me know right away”.

Trump "has given de facto control of most of the federal government to one of the richest men on the planet...The public has no guarantee that its most sensitive data is secure. At best, they have the personal word of Donald Trump, which, paired with a few dollars, might buy you a cup of coffee"

Last night, Musk's staff were stopped trying to enter USAID's HQ. They threatened to call U.S. Marshals. @cnn.com: Sources say they wanted access to security systems and personnel files and to access classified information. Today, the USAID Director of Security and his deputy were put on leave.

Not out of the realm of possibility that we could get such an email at UAlberta, given our far-right provincial govt hates EDI & our prez has signalled he’ll do whatever he thinks they want. This will be a challenge to sociologist in particular, given our discipline’s emphases & traditions.

Looking for straightforward explain-it-to-me-like-I’m-five account of mechanisms linking carbon burning to LA #wildfires. I don’t need to be convinced *that* human-made climate change caused these fires, what I want is to understand *how*. Hot oceans? Distorted air movement in upper atmo?

CBC News is hiring reporters in more than a dozen new cities including Fort St. John, Salmon Arm, Abbotsford, Penticton, Red Deer and Banff, using money paid out by Google under the Online News Act (the act that prompted Facebook to remove news in Canada rather than pay) www.cbc.ca/news/editors...

Slightly paranoid thought re Trump ranting abt taking over Canada: in addition to Arctic sovereignty & water access, map suggests optimal US zone for agriculture & settlement will move way north and into southern MB, SK, BC & AB. New land rush? projects.propublica.org/climate-migr...

Cat brings joy.

Really glad to see @picardonhealth.bsky.social picking up new research by @mmaroto.bsky.social @andiyeg.bsky.social and me. Virus surges aren’t going away, most workplace “sick leave” is inadequate, and women who parent are bearing the brunt of amped-up caregiving demands.

wrote about the demons (ie how being a writer is only going to get worse and how terrified I am) open.substack.com/pub/thelater...

Even if we can’t change anything for our own lifetimes, we can still change the future for generations to come.

🧵The first paper from our project on viral illness in Alberta has been published. @mmaroto.bsky.social , @amykaler.bsky.social and I find that for many working parents balancing persistent circulation of sickness is untenable, and many have reached a point of resignation.

Nice review of Half-Light (and spot-on what I was trying to do with this book, so something must be working): "At her best, Kaler offers us new ways of seeing and grasping both the mundane and the terrifying". albertaviews.ca/half-light/

Just read about exploding Tesla truck at the Trump Las Vegas hotel, sounds like it took 2025 less than 24 hours to jump the shark. Time is speeding up in an extremely disconcerting manner.

This fits. Gendered aversion to any environment perceived as feminine/effeminate runs the gamut from deliberate mockery to semi-conscious disdain to unthinking apathy. Overlaps with very masculinized rise in NEETs; also with appeal of misogyny-lite e.g. Jordan Peterson.

Follow the money. Insurers and mortgage brokers know what’s happening.

How the Climate Crisis Became an Insurance Crisis www.nytimes.com/2024/12/19/c...

I'm convinced that home insurance & mortgage info is a very good guide to what's coming climate-wise. Royal LePage Canada is now adding "climate risk" estimates to its listings (heat & precipitation). Enter an address, see what financiers predict, hours of depressing fun. www.royallepage.ca/en/
