This is where we are now: An elementary school at Fort Campbell has removed all books from its library that so much as *allude* to slavery or the civil rights movement. The wholesale erasure of history in real time.

Teachers teach. We need a leaderful movement, and there are leaders all around us.

There’s something happening in this country.

The Trump administration has ordered the creation of 500K more illegal immigrants by stripping temporary protected status from Haitians. Vance said he didn't care they were here legally he would still call them illegal aliens. Now Trump gets to make the law match his rhetoric.

In 2024, the NLRB filed a complaint against Tesla for interfering in a union drive at their Buffalo, NY assembly plant. Today:

Yesterday, Trump said: "Medicare, Medicaid — none of that stuff is going to be touched." But this morning he backed the House GOP budget resolution, which includes at least $880 billion in draconian #Medicaid cuts. www.politico.com/live-updates...

Wrote about the morally vacuous, strategically unsound (and also wrong!) anti-“woke”diagnosis everyone’s still sticking with, even in the midst of civil rights apocalypse.

We all need comic relief. But do people not remember that Germans made fun of Hitler at the start? Late night comedians can joke, but it’s entirely counterproductive if they then don’t tell people to get active and have organizers on the show. Union leaders, teachers, scientists.

I’m mildly obsessed with this video from 1994. www.reddit.com/r/OldSchoolC...

"Suddenly, and not accidentally, people who work for the American federal government are having the same experience as people who find themselves living under foreign occupation" www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

"The actions of Musk and DOGE have created moral dilemmas of a kind no American government employee has faced in recent history. Protest or collaborate? Speak up against lawbreaking or remain silent?" www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

I’m in Munich and people keep asking me to decode Vance’s speech. OK: In Vance English “free speech” means “Let Musk run your elections” and “democracy” means “let Russia run your elections.” Now move on. 2025 is about what Europeans do, not what Americans say.

always read @tomscocca.bsky.social

🚨Elon Musk’s DOGE operatives are attempting to access confidential tax information — tax returns, bank data, Social Security numbers — for millions of Americans. Illegal access can lead to jail time under federal law. @wyden.senate.gov and I are investigating and fighting back.

I study the rise of autocracy in Ven and Nic. Key reason autocracy went far: bureaucratic capturing. Presidents colonized state agencies. If you were not loyal to the president, as a civil servant you were fired, demoted, defunded. Feels like Trump read my book. www.brookings.edu/books/autocr...

All my life I have studied democratization and autocratization. My 1st field trip was to newly democratic Argentina. I then added autocracies to my portfolio: Cuba, Ven, etc. I think I can recognize the stages of transition to authoritarianism. Here are the boxes Trump has already checked off.

Trump's DOJ recently argued (left image) it should be allowed to delete crucial info from CDC, FDA, & other health agencies because, hey, people can always use the Wayback Machine! The judge who issued a restraining order stopping this purge said that was laughable (right image).

Just in: HHS Inspector General Christi Grimm, who was fired along with 7 other IGs by Trump last month, said she found out she was fired while driving. She's been aggressively auditing Medicare Advantage. More than 2,000 investigations now in purgatory. www.documentcloud.org/documents/25...

from “Parable of the Talents” by Octavia Butler

“The thing that I can’t get over is that the actual richest man in the world directed my fucking firing. I make $50k a year and work to keep drinking water safe. The richest man in the world decided that was an expense too great for the American taxpayer.”

We need the cerulean sweater scene from The Devil Wears Prada, but for science funding.

Portuguese editorial cartoonist Zez Vaz reaches back to Tiananmen Square to call on American defiance.

Enabling continued impoundment would: —Allow the administration to direct Congressionally-authorized grants just to politically allied states & localities —Allow the administration to kill spending on types of projects that Congress funded but the admin doesn't like

Worth repeating: The administration is unilaterally cancelling spending from programs that have been funded by Congress, in agency after agency. This is a direct violation of the Impoundment Act. Yet here we are.

Medicaid cuts are a serious issue. But @healthyfla.bsky.social reminds me that health policy advocates have some of the most creative imaginations. Making diamonds out of coal! #HealthPolicyValentines #HandsOffOurMedicaid

When you're looking for just the right mix to let your elected officials know how you feel this Valentine's Day. 😉✊💪 #FightLikeHealth #healthpolicyvalentines #HandsOffOurMedicaid

Does anyone truly think cancer researchers are doing fraud waste and abuse?

Frightening example of surveillance state to come. In Atlanta, secret cameras on homes of activists and a community center. If they can be targets, anyone can be.

I'm hearing now that *every* technologist CFPB hired to investigate Big Tech was fired this evening. That's somewhere between 70-100 people. wired.com/story/dozens-of-cfpb-workers-terminated-in-after-hours-firing-blitz/

Trump is weaponizing financial payments: here's what you can do. "Put more bluntly: the Trump administration is trying to turn private banks into enforcers ... If banks give in, it will be an enormous and dangerous step." www.programmablemutter.com/p/trump-is-w...

The great Yale historian, Timothy Snyder, expert on fascism and on Ukraine and Russia

I think this is our future unless someone stops him. Musk’s plan for X has been for it to replace the entire banking system. His keen interest in seizing control of Treasury payments (and its tech) may forebode an intention to have such payments go through X www.theverge.com/2023/10/26/2...
