Trump bombing Iran was illegal and unjustified. I ran for Congress to make sure our leaders consider the true costs of war. And I will be in the Senate, standing on my titanium legs, demanding answers from Trump. My statement:

There is something about foreign policy that makes otherwise smart people lose their ever loving minds and I think it’s that they want more than anything to avoid looking dumb.

"An evil man will burn his own nation to the ground to rule over the ashes." —Sun Tzu

Netanyahu has spent the better part of two decades trying to strong arm the United States into an unprovoked war against Iran and finally found a president stupid enough to do it for him. Unbelievable.

If you were too young in 2003 here is what Bush told the American people: 1) The Iraq War won’t cost a lot of money 3) We won’t need a lot of troops 4) We’ll bring peace and freedom to Iraq 5) We’ll find WMDs 6) We’ll be welcomed as liberators 7) It will be easy 8) It won’t take long All lies.

Or—and I know this sounds crazy—we could have just not thrown away the Iran nuclear deal.

And given that a bunch of right-wing militia dudes with tactical cosplay in Michigan plotted to kidnap (and worse) a sitting governor, who’s to say they’re not?

I still can't get past the idea that people in America are now supposed to accept that this is a valid form of law enforcement and just assume it's fine when random dudes in groups with face-coverings, no ID, no warrant, & no uniform grab people off the street and force them into unmarked vehicles

Remembering this story from 8 years ago, about the differing values of rural & urban people. One reason I remember it is that every single factual assertion made by a rural person in the piece is false.

Also cannot be emphasized enough: Barack Obama successfully negotiated the shutdown of Iran's nuclear program. It exists today because Trump deliberately tore up that agreement. The deaths happening right now can be laid at his door.

To think this all could have been avoided with a McDonald’s birthday party for a young Donny Trump, and a hug from each of his parents.

BREAKING @prri.org poll. My disturbing take: It’s virtually impossible to write a survey question about the treatment of immigrants that is too brutal for Republicans to support. 1) 8 in 10 Republicans support renditions of immigrants to foreign prisons without due process. prri.org/spotlight/ne...

As Melissa notes further down the thread, even 64% of white evangelicals oppose Trump’s ego parade. Do you know how hard it is to get 64% of white evangelicals to oppose anything related to Trump??

My strong instinct is that Trump's threats against Americans' first amendment right to peaceably assemble is going to massively juice attendance at Saturday's protests. www.nokings.org

Posting this 1967 Birmingham News editorial cartoon for all the people who don't realize that this is how MLK was viewed by a big chunk of white America.

This was always clearly the objective and many in the media also insisted on treating anyone who said so clearly like they were some kind of lunatic bsky.app/profile/carn...

Welcome to America, where protesting illegal kidnappings without due process is an insurrection, but attacking the nation’s Capitol is not.

I'm just glad one of these men has the nuclear codes and the other has all our personal data.

When I am queen, all pre-packaged food containing mayo or bleu cheese will come with warning labels. Not because of allergies (although yes, that too) but because they are gross and no one wants their meal ruined via sneak attack.

This is the worst reality show ever.

Women are already dying from denial of care and it should be a much bigger deal. Meanwhile, the Trump admin revokes guidance requiring hospitals to treat women in crisis. apnews.com/article/abor...

Sarah Huckabee Sanders was once politely asked to leave a restaurant and it generated 100x as much handwringing from the media as this will

Yesterday my hometown was hit with massive tornadoes. We weren't expecting them in places that have never been hit before and have no idea who will help us. FEMA is all but dead and our state is run by Republicans that hate the city. This is the canary in the coal mine. My latest.

Did you know former Tiger great Denny McClain released two albums of his organ recordings?! My dad owns one of them.

The Kennedy/Nixon Debates from 1960 Aretha, Spirit in the Dark The National Football League Marching Songs (circa??) Bill Withers, Live at Carnegie Hall This list contains multitudes.

We bought our 11yo Swiftie a turntable for his birthday so he can listen to Taylor on vinyl—and out of curiosity, I asked my dad which albums he still owns. YOU GUYS.

Just a reminder to beware fake Pope Leo quotes, which I already see proliferating on social media. And if you’re one of the fools making & disseminating fake quotes, just don’t. Don’t.

I thought new pope happiness peaked with the South-Side papal brother’s iconic interviews. But watching Cardinal Dolan makes my heart swell with schadenfreude.

This is just purging anyone who’s not a straight white male from power or narratives about our country. I just can’t imagine how insecure and bad at your job you’d have to be to do this

Newark mayor Ras Baraka was just arrested by DHS after visiting an immigrant detention center called Delaney Hall which opened illegally without permits from the city he runs. This is fascism in action.

Every extra hour that ICE spends facing off with activists is an hour they can't spend kidnapping other people. Every extra minute ICE has to spend contingency planning around activists and neighbors, every extra officer ICE has to put on a kidnap squad, is a drain on their efficiency.

It’s really funny that conservatives are like “this pope supports immigrants and doesn’t like gun violence” as opposed to what they think Christianity should be concerned with which is having more white people in Honey Nut Cheerio commercials

Now would be a good time for Chicago media to have some religion reporters. Even one would do. STOP LAYING OFF JOURNALISTS, BUT ESPECIALLY THE ONES WHO COVER RELIGION.

From Michael Sean Winters' first take on Pope Leo XIV: "U.S. conservatives who disagreed with Francis would often cite the parochialism of his Argentine background and, especially, what they considered his Peronist streak. They said he misunderstood the U.S. That dog will no longer hunt."

Here’s Father Jim’s longer take: www.tiktok.com/t/ZTjUQF8Pc/

Colbert on the first American pope will be must-see tv tonight.

"a total Marxist" - a "woke pope" - "a globalist" - "a shitlib" - might be "a demon" MAGA is having a totally normal, not at all deranged reaction to today's big news. Not that more evidence was needed, but it's a reminder of how this movement sees the world and anyone they consider their enemy.

fwiw the people I'll be reading to get up to speed on the new pope include Anthea herself, Michael Sean Winters, @kayaoakes.bsky.social @ejdionne.bsky.social @jamesmartinsj.bsky.social @michaeloloughlin.bsky.social

The same people who brag about being “Bible-believing” Christians think follow the teachings of the biblical Jesus makes you a woke squish. It’s an easy call. I’m Team Jesus.

I trust so few people to have an accurate immediate read on a new pope. Going to need networks to let @jamesmartinsj.bsky.social out of the studio to give us his online take please and thank you.

jd vance has been a catholic for all of five minutes and has already been called to the carpet by two popes

The new pope's name is hugely significant. Pope Leo XIII was the founder of modern Catholic social teaching, a prophet of economic justice: osf.io/preprints/os... And an enemy of (real) antisemitism. May peace with justice roar with this lion.

tragically he turned out to be a Cubs fan so pls stay tuned for the schism

Could use more specificity, though. It’s how I found out: “Did ya hear? We’ve got a new pope and he’s the first American. And he’s from Chicago!” **Start to have a stroke thinking they’ve elected Cupich, who would be my pope if I got a vote.**
