As promised, here are the slides I shared with students to convince them to NOT use chatGPT and other artificial stupidity. TL;DR? AI is evil, unsustainable and stupid, and I'd much rather they use their own brains, make their own mistakes, and actually learn something. 🪄

I really enjoyed speaking at several universities recently about the importance of supporting PhD candidates' mental health. And love that my art collaboration with @luciatypes.bsky.social has encouraged lots of discussion about reminders. What would you add to the list? @thephdplace.bsky.social

To all PhD-, Master- and Bachelor students in ecological modeling: Consider applying for this year's Young Modellers in Ecology (#YoMos) workshop in Ilmenau, Germany and exchange with enthusiastic young modellers in ecology! Would be great to see you there!

A number of my science colleagues are newly out of work, so I thought I'd share some open positions at UMaine that might be of interest. Please share with your networks! 1) Assistant Research Professor in Cryosphere and Land-Surface Modeling:

Are you a scientist whose work is being affected by changes in the Trump administration? Get in touch with @nature.com reporters @maxkozlov.bsky.social @dangaristo.bsky.social @heidiledford.bsky.social Jeff Tollefson & yours truly. Let us know what's on your mind & what we should be writing about.

Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science 💪 We are happy to host so many talented and motivated women in our Land-Atmosphere Interactions group at Leipzig University! The ForExD @erc.europa.eu team Franzi Müller, Eleanor Butler and Yimian Ma, working on forest disturbances

We got a message from the university to remove any use of the "DEI", "diversity", "equity", or "inclusion" from all public-facing documents. They said that even "biodiversity" is being flagged by the federal government. We live in the dumbest timeline.

Happy #InternationalDayOfWomenAndGirlsInScience! One obvious thing institutions can do to help reduce the attrition of women in science is to stop hiring men who were fired from their previous institutions for sexual harassment.

Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science! 🤟🤟

Hi @agu.org it’s only been a few days since you very specifically asked for your members’ input on how to respond to the administrations cuts to research funding and assault on DEI. Well, I’ve been a member for at least 15 years and I say you need to foster diversity. Put it back.

The main DEI page from @agu.org has been modified to take diversity out of the title. Glad to see it's not deleted entirely, but hey AGU, we're watching what you do and remembering the big game you once talked about supporting your diverse membership. Today vs. January

1/n Please see our new paper in Nature Communications! We used 1,851 tree-ring fire-scar sites and contemporary fire perimeters to quantify the prevalence of wildfire from 1600-1880 compared to 1984-2022. 🧪🌍🔥 Our key findings are as follows ...

Danke München! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

Global warming causes extreme temperatures – this is clear to most, but few realize that both droughts and heavy rains are symptomatic of a climate in crisis. @soniaseneviratne.bsky.social explains the far-reaching impacts of climate extremes. ethz.ch/en/news-and-...

When Scientific American endorsed Harris, many scientists and science-friendly people were supportive and grateful, but some said: stick to science, science isn’t political, etc. But reality-denying right-wing fanatics will absolutely come for the scientists www.washingtonpost.com/science/2025...

Trump não Ê uma excrescência do sistema, Ê o ponto a que o sistema chegou. O incómodo vai passar e ele serå o mainstream. Isto desfaz a ideia da polarização entre extremos.

Any further staff cuts to the National Weather Service “means we have a higher — maybe much higher — probability of missing life-saving weather warnings and giving people the heads up they need,” former AMS president/frmr NOAA official Mary Glackin told me. www.cnn.com/2025/02/05/w...

By definition, numerical weather models require international data. The atmosphere knows no geopolitical boundaries: any model that begins and ends at its country’s border is unable to generate reliable predictions until after a weather system crosses its boundaries. Which defeats the purpose!

Some departments of NOAA have been sent an email requiring staff "to pause “ALL INTERNATIONAL ENGAGEMENTS.” (Emphasis theirs.) The message states that the orders extend to participation in international commissions and even emails “with foreign national colleagues.”"

It’s back, so we worried too early (understandable all things considered)…

Are you a fisherman, captain, business professional, nonprofit or scientist that *formally* engages with NOAA Fisheries in any way? I want to hear from you. DM me or Signal +1 973 615 6335. Please amplify. #fisheries #offshorewind #academicsky

427.30 parts per million (ppm) CO2 in air 04-Feb-2025 keelingcurve.ucsd.edu

We are alarmed by the Administration’s actions to freeze science funding and eliminate DEI efforts and climate change initiatives, which go against AGU’s mission and harms our members. We must unite to address these changes, beginning by hearing from you. Read more: https://buff.ly/4hm8r4e

Although NOAA's page on atmospheric CO2 levels has vanished, you can still get this vital information from Ralph Keeling's team at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego keelingcurve.ucsd.edu Please follow bsky.app/profile/keel... for updates and share Don't let science be hidden

Same. Yesterday in my last lecture of the semester, we discussed the importance of defending science and knowledge against the rising threats globally. CO2 will keep rising if we don't do anything about it, and it will keep warming the planet. With or without a website. It's just plain physics...

Thank you @ecologicalsociety.bsky.social for this statement!!

“Scientists need to recognize that bold presentation, dissemination, and support of scientific knowledge has become both a basic commitment and a political act.”

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Profits season starts this morning, with Shell reporting full year 2024 results followed by Chevron and Exxon. The three have so far made $60.5 bn profit through Q3. During a climate crisis. During a cost of greed crisis. www.nrdc.org/bio/zanagee-...

Researchers paid nearly $9 billion to publishers between 2019 and 2023 so you could read our work. Why? Why??

At what spatial resolution should we map forest carbon from space? [1/2] In our letter @science.org led by Laura Duncanson we reflect on whether a pursuit of ever-higher resolution maps is necessarily a good thing. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Do ESMs agree on the strength of the link between ENSO and the land carbon sink, and if so, for the same reasons? Check out István Dunkl’s paper just out of the press ⬇️
