Absolutely this. Promotion and tenure procedures and evaluations must adapt to account for this. Doing the job now is fundamentally different than doing the job 5 years ago, which was fundamentally different than doing the job 5 years before that.

After I had to explain that becoming a federal food safety inspector requires education and on the job training, it became incredibly clear that people have no idea how much time federal employees spend preventing mass deaths

Join us! Science Homecoming helps scientists reconnect with communities by writing about the importance of science funding in their hometown newspapers. We’ve mapped every small newspaper in the U.S. and provide resources to get you started. Help science get back home 🧪🔬🧬 🏠 sciencehomecoming.com

Another morning, another day of waiting for my naturalization interview to be scheduled. It's been 7 months, hoping it comes soon 🙏

Glad to see this post getting some traction, because the Federal Register is the WHOLE ballgame, folks. To drive this point home, a recent EO declares that all posts to FR now must be approved by the White House. www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

I have seen first hand the impact of @brianaguado.bsky.social’s CZI award. We had the freedom to start our in person #LatinXinBME symposia because we know Brian had committed CZI funds for this purpose. Thank you for sharing your story, Brian!

My statement regarding the decision to drop the second round of the CZI Science Diversity Leadership Award funding opportunity:

Did you ever wonder what other information you can retrieve from metagenomic reads? Well, you can estimate the dietary intake- just from sequences from human stool. Check this amazing work out by @cdiener.com @gibbological.bsky.social @kl-fil.bsky.social and others: bsky.app/profile/cdie...

Starting my Bluesky adventure by highlighting a new paper from the lab!

In this moment the values of orgs that have values are really shining through

Debate around the 'Brain microbiome' is not the first or the last time when the presumed sterility of the internal organs is questioned. What's important is to know how to traverse this treacherous path. We address this in this month's editorial. #microbiomesky #microsky 🦠 shorturl.at/Zzfd3

A mini-grant like this one from #TwoPhotonArt is what funded all my supplies for ~2-3 years of my #MicrobeMondays and #MicroMartes series when I was a postdoc. Apply!!!

Reminder! Science IRL mini-grant applications are due February 14! These grants are to support IN PERSON science communication projects in the US that reach science disinterested people, and ideally encourage concrete action in the audience. Apply here! docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

Yes, this is the lab that hosts “drag and tag,” shark tagging research with drag queens that raises money for Florida LGBTQ youth. We could sure use your support, and you get an amazing adventure out of it! www.scientificamerican.com/article/drag...

Now seems like a good time to say that anti-discrimination policies like DEI do not oppose merit-based hiring. They are intended to expand the pool of talent considered for jobs and hired based on merit. In the past organizations only hired a subset of the talent available because of discrimination.

Somewhere in the U.S., there’s a scientist staring at their NSF/NIH grant application wondering why they bother. This post is for you. Science and society both need you. Hang in there and know there is a whole community supporting you.

The While House pauses all federal grants and loan disbursements. For researchers, this means that work already completed and charged to federal grants (NSF, NIH, etc) will not be reimbursed by the federal government until further notice. www.cnn.com/2025/01/27/p...

A real interesting day to be a Colombian who lives in the United States 🫠 Also, reminder for everyone - it is ColOmbia!

I love that reading lets me spend time living life through new perspectives. Right now, I am really enjoying solving a murder mystery through Misty Divine’s fabulous eyes! @hollywstars.bsky.social created a drag world in these pages that is both beautifully complex and fun to read! #QueerBooks

What an incredibly bad week for global health! 😔😢 www.nytimes.com/2025/01/24/u...

Today we report a new compendium of human gut microbiomes with >168,000 samples By analyzing this massive dataset, we discovered distinct microbiome patterns across the globe, and show we can predict where a person lives just from their gut bacteria Now out in Cell: www.cell.com/cell/fulltex...

I'm just sayin', yes, we're in the darkest of timeliness rn, but if Black people were so quick to give up like so many of y'all on this app talking about, "Welp. We tried. Democracy is dead. Everything is hopeless," we would have never freed ourselves from slavery, never won our civil rights, etc.

Finally did it. Goodbye, Twitter - thank you for helping me land and start this job 🥹

Honest thought of the day: nothing motivates me more to wrap up a project than the prospect of a conference presentation in a fun location! Wrapping up my first #ASEE proceeding right now so I can go to Montreal!

Moving to this platform has me questioning how we interact on academic social media. For example: want to know what's more humbling than winning an award or getting a grant? Not having your grant even discussed in the first place, but we don't talk about that 🤐🙃

SO SO excited to see the expansion of our board! And also, extra excited to have Porras TMI Lab member - Marcos Javith helping with comms!

For me, this MIRA = relief + freedom to explore creative ideas. Yes, I'm also proud, excited, and grateful but, mainly, I am SO relieved to not have (for now) the looming pressure of accounts quickly approaching $0. We should talk more about this! #NewPI #persistence bme.ufl.edu/uf-biomedica...

We are hiring! ¡Estamos contratando! We are looking for a research coordinator to help me manage the lab, and contribute to our research on host-microbe interactions at the Porras TMI Lab. Please help spread the word! Apply here by Dec 8th: explore.jobs.ufl.edu/en-us/job/53...

The Biomaterials Starter Pack is continuing to grow - please share with your colleagues! Self-nominate yourself to the list, we're looking for anyone working or researching within the broad scope of biomaterials either in academia or industry. go.bsky.app/DymaVAp

I can't find African Scientists and researchers easily on here. As the second largest continent with 1.3 billion inhabitants our perspectives matter. I'm creating a starterpack to find folks, follow them and amplify them. If you are an African Scientist let me know below so I can add you. Thanks.

Just watched the full House hearing & testimony of NIH Director Dr. Monica Bertignolli. A few takeaways: • the proposed budget, in addition to not increasing for inflation, wants to condense NIH from 27 to 15 institutes. The NIH does not think this is a good idea. 🧵1/?

Hello world! Starting back from scratch feels so strange, no?
