Tired of witnessing the unspeakable evil that is our immigration system and its enforcement and then being told that I’M the one who’s out of touch for thinking that kids with cancer shouldn’t waste away in squalid dungeons because their parents were born on the wrong side of this rock.

Family detention at Dilley, begun in 2014 under Obama and halted under Biden, is back — and it’s just as bad as it’s always been. I visited there in 2015 the week before long-term family detention was restricted in court. I’ll never forget the listlessness of the children held there for months.

Oh no, people are free to live their lives however they want!

Yes

I am not, to be perfectly clear, handing it to LAPD.

I think Elon Musk may hate his robot son more than his trans daughter at this point. Really fitting that he can’t control either despite being the richest man in the world.

There can be no future for constitutional government in the United States that treats this as merely an unfortunate election outcome producing an administration with bad policies. It must be repudiated root and branch as an illegitimate criminal enterprise, void and unlawful in its entirety.

I have nothing but contempt for people with this much hostility toward bodily autonomy. This paragraph gives it all away.

Over 100 days after Mahmoud Khalil was unjustly arrested and detained because of his advocacy for Palestinian rights, he has been released on bail. We celebrate that Mahmoud will finally be home with his wife and newborn son while his case proceeds.

I don’t think it’s possible to understand the Biden administration and Trump round 2 without recognizing that there was a growing fifth column of bosses — and journalists sympathetic to bosses — determined to ensure that the social movements of 2020-2023 could never, ever happen again

Lawsuits like this are one reason why for a period of time, local police didn’t want to sign 287(g) agreements with ICE; because they’re on the hook when they detain US citizens illegally by accident.

I still think 48-hour detentions without a hearing are too long. Americans are far too comfortable letting other people be detained without a legally sufficient reason.

I responded to this yesterday because the phrase “real world complications of self-ID” is so preposterous but I missed the “legal path to transition” which is even more insane. That is a phrase spoken by people with genocidal intent.

sensational

*checking the weather* “I wonder if the UV index will be bad today at noon on the summer solstice.”

"Only after she was legally dead did doctors do everything in their power to keep her body alive"

Every NYC liberal should rank Lander and Mamdani and NOT rank Cuomo. This is very straightforward. Even if Mamdani and Lander are lower on your ballot.

New HAIM album. The hype is real. Haip? hyped for HAIM. props to Danielle for throwing her guitar pick at me in 2018. It is probably my most prized material possession.

This is more notice than they are prepared to give people before deporting them

It's fascinating seeing the same rhetoric being employed here (teaching the controversy over "self-ID", etc.) that the New Statesman and Guardian were using 10 years ago for the UK. We know how that ended up - the NYT want to turn USian liberals into rabid transphobes like Brit liberals.

Can't imagine why he picked this holiday of all days to talk about people not wanting to work it is a mystery

Ok. But here’s the thing: Juneteenth is not about freedom being won, it’s about freedom being ENFORCED. The heroes of Juneteenth are the Union Soldiers who went from plantation to plantation looking slaveholders in the face & saying: fuck with us if you dare. Freedom is not won, it is SEIZED

This framing exists because the decision is instantly obvious as one of the legal atrocities of US history, like Dred Scot, the 1870s Civil Rights Cases, Korematsu. The Times doesn’t want to say “The Supreme Court stripped rights out of law” so instead it says “Here’s why they did it to themselves”

This guy ended up getting deported anyway so never ever ever ever ever ever volunteer your PINs to anyone, let alone a federal agent. Don’t unlock anything for them.

“How the Oklahoma City federal building bet on Timothy McVeigh and lost.”

“The real world consequences of self-ID” But only for trans people’s ability to self ID. Everyone else is afforded that right. For trans people our assessment of our own minds is a political football to be fought over every two years in the voting booth. Not so for cis folk’s gender identity.

scum, I spit on you

So it's a siege. ICE is laying siege to an American city.

Sex and gender are both purely biologically determined by hormones, chromosomes and gonads and are therefore immutable and also we need a police state to make sure no one tries anything funny.

thinking again about this 2018 cover

In America something as core to your person as your own internal sense of your own gender is a frivolous non-issue while at the same time “sincerely held beliefs” like “queer people are the manifestation of evil” is fine and protected not just by law but by the constitution.

Liberals haven’t had a majority on the Supreme Court since my parents were in grade school.

If you are fired up about the Skrmetti opinion and are in NY or DC, please plan to join us at these rallies! DC 3pm at Supreme Court, NY 5pm at Union Square. Spread the word. act.aclu.org/a/proud-and-... act.aclu.org/a/proud-and-...
