"The U.S. President is inviting everyone to fully embrace his vision of property development as a replacement for international law, what we might term his real estate ontology." Must-read.

"In the U.S., you can't be a left without anti-racist politics...that's the country we live in. It's a country of immigrants. It's a country of formerly enslaved people. There have to be racial politics." @keeanga.bsky.social w/the usual sharp political analysis. thedigradio.com/podcast/woke...

Guantánamo camps begin to fill and then suddenly empty. Important to ask why only Venezuelans were sent through GTMO, especially when not all Venezuelan deportees were routed that way. Trump elevated Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua during his campaign, and now lists it as a terror organization.

A brilliant piece: "The tired Brandmauer discussion is, in other words, an item of nostalgia, and current demonstrations against the AfD/CDU collaboration address a marginal problem, a conflict of the past: The German consensus is already ethnonationalist and post-European."

This is unprecedented. The Rising Tides agreement was just with the province, but adding federal recognition in is a big deal. This is the first time Aboriginal Title land has been negotiated, rather than litigated in Canada.

"Jocelynn Rojo Carranza took her life after experiencing months of relentless bullying from her sixth grade classmates over her family's immigration status, with some students even threatening to contact the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)." Just no words ...

"Have any three men ever presented a less inspiring electoral choice, or more perfectly reflected the exhaustion, stupidity, and delusion of a country’s political elite?" 👏 @benwritesthings.bsky.social

"As in the 1940s, imperial elites and their clients will determine the fate of Palestinians. Weak Arab states could not protect Palestinians then. History seems poised to repeat itself, but with one key difference: this time, there is no attempt to create the illusion of restraint." @ Dirk Moses

P.S. to the next politician or member of the foreign service boasting about Mexico's tradition as "a country of refuge".

👇🏼 (applies to Europe and the journey to defy Frontex as well)

There still are good news! I just learned that a paperback edition of my book is ready.🥂🥂

Germany: Where “historical responsibility” means canceling UN representatives at universities - twice.

The number of people 'liking' tweets critical of cancellations or voicing opposition only in private while towing the line in public is frustrating. Who do you think will speak up when it's your colleagues and fields of research that are affected by similar infringements of academic freedom?

Please share widely and join us! Conditions of Life Calculated to Destroy Legal and Forensic Perspectives on the Ongoing Gaza Genocide with Francesca Albanese & Eyal Weizman 19.02.2025, 10-12 @ FU Berlin, Hörsaal 1a

All the more I'm happy to announce that Francesca Albanese and Eyal Weizman of @forensicarchi.bsky.social will be speaking at FU on 19 February!

I don't even have words for just how cynical and absurd this is. Help obliterate a place, help displace most of its people with weapons and words - and for over a year - then, once the dust settles, act shocked in light of the entirely predictable outcome. Clownish behavior @germany.diplo.de

My newsletter, The Troubled Region, is out with some news for 2025 - I'm going to try a paywall this year. It is foreign correspondence from Mexico, and also interrogates foreign correspondence. Link below to read & subscribe for $5/month or $50/year. 💫 👇 www.thetroubledregion.com/the-troubled...

Now out from behind the paywall: @maricohen.bsky.social goes long on the crisis facing the field of genocide studies as institutions that emerged from the study of the Holocaust grapple with—or ignore—genocide in Gaza. jewishcurrents.org/can-genocide...

"But after the passage of another Father’s Day with him, still alive against the unfathomable grief and loss and death of so many daddies in Palestine, I’ve come to better understand bell hooks’s conception of love as the only cure for the fascistic fear of and obsession with death." Zoé Samudzi

"Yet focusing on Musk as an anomaly is hypocritical. It allows Germany’s liberal establishment to avoid reckoning with its own complicity in normalising reactionary ideas" (i.e. anti-migrant culture wars and ethnonationalist alliances). Bravo @hahauenstein.bsky.social

"Después me di cuenta que estudiar la masculinidad es indagar qué es y cómo es el poder. Y tercero, de que en todos mis textos hay esfuerzos por identificar y modelizar qué está detrás de los epifenómenos que relatan los diarios o los testimonios, pero que yo no cuento la crueldad."

In 2010, anti-copyright activist Aaron Swartz hanged himself after being prosecuted to the full extent of the law for making copyrighted academic publications freely available. Today, academic publishers are insisting those copyrights be lifted to feed the corporate AI slop machine.
