Kathy Hochul can't point to anything this hypothetical scholar has done or said that is antisemitic, because it's just a job posting and no one was hired. So as far as I can tell, the message here is that so much as acknowledging Palestinians as a people with a history and identity is antisemitic.

As an identifiably Jewish academic who teaches on Jewish history and culture, Palestinian Studies as an academic discipline does not threaten me. What threatens me is Kathy Hochul setting up attacks on academic freedom and the independence of the university as something supposedly done in my name.

On this day 13 years ago 17 year old Trayvon Benjamin Martin was murdered in Miami Gardens, Florida. This incident, more than any other, started the modern police abolitionist movement. Remember Trayvon.

I'm not sure this is bending the knee given that he is a billionaire and this is essentially saying "we won't publish those who call to tax me." It's actually an incredibly transparent following of his own class interests.

“The needy shall not always be forgotten, nor the hope of the poor perish forever [threatening]”

Everyone but Syria and the Syrian people are to blame for what it is seemingly being condemned to. There is a special place in hell for all those who stall, block, destabilise, and harm this beautiful country in its quest to rebuild itself.

Strangely moving to see sculptures of sleeping sperm whales hang in the vast space of Winchester Cathedral. At one point, this cathedral may have been lit by whale oil. Ambergris may have scented some varieties of sacred chrism oil.

Does the claim that Israel has an intrinsic "right to exist" as a nation-state apply only to Israel, or also to post-Assad Syria? And does the claim that Israel has to respond violently to being invaded, because "no country would just accept this" also apply to post-Assad Syria or not?

The more relevant Latin theological phrase is not ordo amoris, but libido dominandi - the lust for domination, a favorite phrase of St. Augustine's. Political spite, glee over the despair of others, "owning" others, trolling others, etc, are all born out of this impulse.

It's so weird to just like be living your life while a coup is going on idk I'm supposed to be BREAK THE REGIME OF NORMALCY posting or something but it's just............... Terrible shit idk Moreover, ICE must be destroyed

I called my parents for help proofing my sermon for grammar. Somehow it's 2000 words, so God bless them. And the biggest edit I got was on "our enemies' hearts and ours all need God's salvation" - my father was like "you mean, we all need God's *grace of forgiveness* so that we can be saved, right?"

I really need faith leaders to understand that we are not in normal times. "Both sides" types of comments about politics are not being read as "let's all be civil" but as "all opinions are equal" in a climate where one "side" of things is currently doing explicitly evil things & calling it good. ⚓

"The past is never dead. It's not even past." - William Faulkner, Requiem for a Nun

I honestly hope that if people hear this coming from me then maybe it will sink in you DO NOT need to get arrested. We live in a surveillance state, an arrest now does not carry the same consequences as arrests in ‘68. The state is violent & will escalate on you. You should avoid arrest if possible

movies you've watched more than 6 times, gifs only

The thing about literally all "concerns about immigration" is that they fall into one of two categories. 90% of them reference things that are made up and don't happen. 10% reference things that do happen but are fine. None of them are based in reality

Any multilingual preachers out there? I’m learning this year truly how differently my brain works in Chinese than in English. Not just syntax or cultural references, but also the way I’m making theological claims & the very tone of my preaching. Writing my first sermon in Standard Chinese is … wow.

We should radicalize the clergy. I'm entering my Vita Scudder era

Heard a song from the 80s reference a "long distance call" and it occurred to me that this is a concept that no longer holds any emotional currency whatsoever

Praying for colleagues preaching this weekend, when Psalm reminds us "Do not fret because of the wicked; do not be envious of wrongdoers" and Jesus says "Love your enemies; do good to those who hate you; bless those who curse you; pray for those who mistreat you"

Ok, I'm doing a version of this thread for 🧪 who are new to political conditions where info security is a safety issue: 1. Don't make public lists of people who are engaging in acts of resistance 2. Be weary of calls to advertise acts of subversion 3. Don't live post resistance meetings

Living fully into my nonjurer heritage today. Some folks may want a king. I ain’t one of them. ⚓️

monastic wisdom? When praying with a group, do what the group does. For private prayer: "Pray as you can, not as you can't." (Abbot John Chapman) Find what works for your private prayer and stick with it (even if it is different from others.) - Br. Abraham (St. Gregory's Abbey) #tec

Today is National Day of Remembrance for the 120,000 Japanese Americans who were put into internment/concentration camps by an Executive Order. This is a very real part of US history, and I can only hope that we never repeat it again, but it feels, more than before, a real possibility again.

When someone says any variety of “if you fight back they’ll authoritarian crack down you” I always wonder what they think is going to happen if we don’t fight back

A meditation When we pray the office (or preform any act for the church), we are making a sacrifice of our time. Literally - we give away something we can not take back. Furthermore, we can think of everything we do as a sacrifice of our time. And are we making sacrifices to God or idols? ⚓️

A phlebotomist told me that I don’t have bad veins. It’s over for you suckers. 😎
