I don’t remember who first tweeted this sentiment but it has stuck with me: Olympic broadcasts should feature one normal person in good physical health doing each event for comparison

US FDA suspends food safety quality checks after staff cuts reut.rs/42C4h1Z

In a horrific Newsmax interview, Trump adviser Sebastian Gorka says that anyone advocating for Kilmar Abrego Garcia to be returned to the U.S. could be viewed as "technically aiding and abetting" terrorists. "Do you love America, or do you hate America? It’s really quite that simple."

This was incredibly affecting. Watch.

There is absolutely a collective action problem here but a small number of GOPers in the House and Senate could move as a unit to caucus with the Democrats and end this right now.

DHS Secretary Noem threatens to terminate Havard's Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certification if it doesn't turn over student records.

DOGE is exfiltrating our research.

If you're having trouble making sense of what's going on, I have a brief explainer with 3 simple buckets for you.

this entire "administration" and every single thing associated with it boils down to a performative display of dominance.

Today @vanhollen.senate.gov was denied entry to the same prison.

I wrote about DOGE, which is terrible at stopping fraud but great at doing it newrepublic.com/article/1940...

After writing my history of concentration camps, I came to believe that short of committing murder yourself, one of the worst things you can do is to abet or exploit the suffering of another human being to increase your own power in the world.

As with social security, they're now breaking student loans, as well: "Colleges nationwide complained of similar problems accessing student records and of getting a boilerplate message confirming the problems but providing no other information..." www.washingtonpost.com/education/20...

worth reiterating that in literally any other context a 10% tariff on Japan alone would be getting wall to wall financial news coverage, would be considered the largest trade war escalation in modern American history and the dumbest economic policy move by a President in decades

“They’re not really using AI, they’re not really driving efficiency. What they’re doing is smashing everything,” the former official said. www.politico.com/news/2025/04...

“Tech Bro” Balaji Srinivasan, a leader in the “network state” movement, RTd this 4/13/25 post in which “Based Beff Jezos” declares that “Elon shld turn Starbase or somewhere else into an American Shenzhen. If he can co-run the country he’s qualified to start a special economic zone city state.” 1/

There’s just so much shady shit in this story, but this really sticks out. Folks in NLRB’s IT unit were so freaked out by what they saw DOGE doing that they wanted to notify the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Then this happened:

DOGE officials engaged in a security breach from the National Labor Relations Board, likely taking data "on unions, ongoing legal cases and corporate secrets" unrelated to efficiency, and then tried to cover their tracks. If they are doing it here, no reason to assume they are not doing it elsewhere

I still don't understand the credulousness. The POINT was to undermine the safety and stability of our data.

Feels weird to barge in with good news, but The Onion is hiring two more fellows: Here's a link to our Graphics Fellowship: jobs.gusto.com/postings/the... Here's a link to our Video Fellowship: jobs.gusto.com/postings/the... Solid pay + full benefits for six months. Come make stupid shit with us.

Anyone want to be terrified today?

One of hundreds of people abducted by ICE and sold to slavery in El Salvador was a 19 year old with no criminal record in the US or Venezuela and no tattoos of any kind. An ICE kidnapper who grabbed him outside his house said, "He's not the one." The other said, "Take him anyway." So they did.

THRILLED to see this! (Also, some people who deserve shouts out are HLS Profs. Niko Bowie @nikobowie.bsky.social , Ryan Doerfler @ryandoerfler.bsky.social, & Ben Eidelson @beidelson.bsky.social - all of whom publicly called on Harvard not to capitulate.)
