Hi everyone, I'm excited to announce this new project: a website dedicated to research and data on imperialism and inequality. You're going to love this... globalinequality.org

1.5 months to go until my book Impact Evaluation in Firms and Organizations is out with @mitpress.bsky.social! An accessible introduction to impact evaluation & causal machine learning, with examples in #R & #Python: mitpress.mit.edu/978026255292... Examples: dataverse.harvard.edu/dataset.xhtm...

How much of the intergenerational transmission of SES is due to social factors? To answer this, shared 🧬 between parents and children need to be considered. In our new study, we use two designs to account for genetic confounding. We find that roughly 20 percent is due to social factors!

New post alert :) We’ve got 2 new DiD papers, 1 fantastic DiD guide, and a clever method from Athey–Chetty–Imbens on using experiments to fix observational bias open.substack.com/pub/diddiges...

Here's how the gradient flow for minimizing KL(pi, target) looks under the Fisher-Rao metric. I thought some probability mass would be disappearing on the left and appearing on the right (i.e. teleportation), like a geodesic under the same metric, but I was very wrong... What's the right intuition?

New one: regress everything on everything & when the standardized regression coefficient in one direction is twice as large as the one in the other direction, add single-headed arrow. Mum, can we have causal discovery at home? We have causal discovery at home. Causal discovery at home:

Sociology is mostly about choosing whether something is “structured”, “contingent”, or “performed”

🔥New #basicincome paper just posted:🔥 "Basic income and labor supply: Evidence from an RCT in Germany" (maybe not the wittiest title, but descriptive...) maxkasy.github.io/home/files/p... Feedback welcome, this is still subject to revisions!

The expansion of free school meals announced this week will make a huge difference to many struggling families. But this should be the first step in a more ambitious child poverty strategy. Read more about the Government should do ⬇️ buff.ly/4biQa5z

In quantitative social science analyses, it’s striking how often there’s uncertainty on whether various correlates of outcomes are CONFOUNDERS or MEDIATORS. In past ~20 years, we finally realized how pervasive & pernicious posttreatment control is. Collective learning on that is good. But…

The "Gollum effect" - wow didn't know this name, but yes, this is exactly what makes certain fields so terrible (like network science). It's just about old men behaving like Gorillas 🤮 https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-025-01588-w It's so nice when PhD students can establish themselves […]

If I have time I'll put together a more detailed thread tomorrow, but for now, I think this new paper about limitations of Chain-of-Thought models could be quite important. Worth a look if you're interested in these sorts of things. ml-site.cdn-apple.com/papers/the-i...

#OtD 7 Jun 1968 women workers at Ford's Dagenham plant in England walked out on strike for equal pay with men. The strike led to the Equal Pay Act of 1970, although pay equality at Ford was only achieved after a later strike in 1984 stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/1071...

Firm wage premiums play a key role in intergenerational pay inequality, shaping access to high- vs low-paying firms. As advantaged workers sort into top firms, wage premiums become a key engine of earnings persistence. By @pengzell.bsky.social, @natewilmers.bsky.social. Read more: bit.ly/43vcdnq

The rise of non-response in surveys has led to the increase of non-probability sampling. USA case but problem is world wide.

Academia will form these little pockets -- people whose theorizing is outrageous & supported by methods outdated since the 90s -- but once it reaches a critical size those people just review each others papers & grants, form societies, hand out awards etc, like a self-contained parallel society.

Abadie, Diamond, and Hainmueller (2015) is where the replication crisis comes to economics and political science. Simply put, this chart is impossible. It implies that West Germany’s real GDP per capita grew by almost 8% per year from 1960 to 1990. But it clearly didn’t… 1/20
