There is something oddly compelling about this surreal 1989 Late Show feature on the Walkman. So much of smartphone culture (and its critique) already in embryo, and yet somehow just "off" enough to feel uncanny in 2025. youtu.be/qXG-RGCatwA?...

One thing that needs to get repeated until it sinks in is that “AI” does not simply function as a tool that people in power are using; it’s even more powerful as a permission structure for the destructive & extractive things they wanted to do in the first place.

Just Sweden terrifying every foreigner witless by testing its national emergency / civil defence alert system (as it does four times a year)...

If you know anyone looking for a funded PhD, Uppsala Idéhistoria is recruiting two - in "history of ideas" and "history of science" (both *very* broadly defined). International applicants welcome! You can write in English or Swedish. 1/4 www.uu.se/en/about-uu/... www.uu.se/en/about-uu/...

Meanwhile, here in Sweden, we have local income tax (an additional ~2-3%) to supplement local property taxes and, quelle surprise, it's fairer and leads to functioning and well-funded local government. (Local libraries, open seven days a week, gasp!)

University history lecturers spend much of the first year survey courses unravelling students' conviction that a source is useless because "it is bias (sic)". No, the bias or perspective is precisely what we're interested in.

The shift in England from HEFCE to Office for Students: 'One little discussed impact of this change was an avalanche of university borrowing that has dramatically shifted the priorities and risk profile of English higher education.' And then there is what HEFCE's demise has done to research....

As a South Asian, I can only politely ask: what the fuck?

Join us on a short #LGBTQHistoryMonth thread as we look into a symbol of identity, solidarity and love, hidden between plain covers and written under an alias at a time when being openly yourself could be a criminal offence #LGBTHM

Your occasional reminder that these months of tantrums are about farmers being asked to pay *half the rate of inheritance tax the rest of you are liable for*.

This LGBTQ+ history month, we wanted to share one of our team's favourite responses in the archive. In this directive response the writer, aged 24 and who identifies as a lesbian, tells the story of finding out that she has a great-aunt (72) who is also gay.

The new school into which the remaining Humanities departments are to be merged is going to be the School of Global Humanities. Meanwhile, global languages will no longer be taught there.

"A new dining room experiment" Bournville women workers experiencing the "cafetaria", a system so radical that British readers in 1924 required both a diagram and captioned photo ("Pile of Trays") to comprehend it (from mrc-describe.epexio.com/records/IWS/... )

The ActDisease project at Uppsala is organising a conference. If you would like to join us, the CfP is below!
