A heated back and forth in the Oval Office with Trump, Vance, and Zelensky. www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/c6...

This weekend will be spent putting the finishing touches to an introductory article for a forthcoming journal special edition looking at rhetoric & rhetorical studies! It will contain a wide range of representative samples, demonstrating the importance of language. Will be good!

Love it when my first year exam questions are described as funny but plausible! Hopefully there won't be too much laughing... thanks @stuartwilksheeg.bsky.social!

New health regime starting today! Exercise and balanced vitamin intake alongside healthy eating, water intake, and the like! The aim is consolidation and maintaining. It has to happen, because.... www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqtz...

So, if Donald wants to be King of the United States I fear he's in the wrong party. They are called the Republicans! As in Republic. Little to no flexibility on attitudes to a US Monarch! Besides, a new line of Kings needs extraordinary service for it to be granted. We're talking slaying a dragon(!)

I've decided to spend this year's LGBT+ history month by only being a historic gay

Third publication of the yr accepted! The chapter examines #Thatcher's economic liberalism & legacies of her beliefs on #Conservative l/ship elections since 1990. The chapter features in a collection edited by Lord Norton & Matt Beech entitled 'Margaret Thatcher's Legacy' for Edward Elgar Publishing

A few thoughts on the coming spring and summer of healthy living! Basically... a wholesale lifestyle change that includes much more exercise! Comments welcome!

Obviously we can't have MPs who punch the constituents! This suggests we need more stringent checks at candidate selection stage for all parties. Put simply, their mental health & anger management matters. www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cx...

The exit poll from the #German elections. CDU/CSU Conservatives coming first, followed by AfD.

Exit Poll due soon from #Germany - DW News covering the election here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoS6...

To-do list for the coming week - rhetoric article (theory/application); a £1m funding bid; pull the Boris book together; and write a book review! (And keeping an eye on the AD debates/arguments...)

Eyes on Germany for the election- Musk et al have played up the value of AfD. Their impact may well be felt but Germany is a resistant nation. Americans have discovered something Germans experienced decades ago, so may be more resistant to it than others.

Delighted a companion volume to this successful collection focused on Theresa May will be produced, focusing on the Premierships of Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak! It will bring together experts on a range of topics relevant to their time in Number 10. link.springer.com/book/10.1007...

Commuting in each day to #PSA25 this year due to caring responsibilities, so naturally my papers are scheduled for a 9.30am start! Thankfully, the trains look decent and can get by 8am, but still! No safety margin for delays - at rush-hour, three days in a row...!

Nice to be offered a new book contract! Looking forward to producing a new scholarly project focused on failed statecraft, leadership, Truss and Sunak with @drdavidjeffery.bsky.social! Watch this space...

Zelensky won't hold an election now for the same reason the UK didn't in 1940 - there's a war on. The 1935 Parliament sat for ten years before the next general election in 1945 (which even then was held whilst the UK was at war with Japan), but the feeling was it was time after victory in Europe.

Also recommended for PhD supervision training is this book from Anne Lee - she outlines practice as supervisors and also devises categories of supervisory styles. Personally, mine is a mix focusing on personal growth of the candidate into an academic. www.routledge.com/Successful-R...

This article in PhD examinations is very useful and interesting - well worth a read if you're expecting to be the internal or external examiner for a doctoral thesis soon! www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1...

There is also a new and exciting MA in #Education, launching in September. This MA is for graduates from any background with an interest in education practice and theory, which includes business, culture, and third sector professionals. #FindAnMA Details: www.liverpool.ac.uk/courses/2025...

From Sept, @livunipol.bsky.social are launching MA Public Administration & Policy! It's exciting, for which I'll be convening the Dissertation! Writing an MA Dissertation is intellectually rewarding, & I'm very much looking forward to supervising some! Apply here: www.liverpool.ac.uk/courses/2025...

Following a few lost students (and issues with delivering a seminar in a lecture theatre!) the 12pm #POLI323 group will now meet in SCTH SR6!

Delighted that I'll be continuing for a second term as the Chair of the Board of Examiners (no election needed(!)) The second term will be one of reform.... and change! But together, Yes We Can! Will be great.

The marking matrices for #POLI263 are now online, and include breakdowns of what's required for the literature review and the written report! Hopefully these will prove useful ahead of each assessment.

An academic workshop organised by @drdavidjeffery.bsky.social & I will be taking place at @livunipol.bsky.social in July! The workshop examines statecraft & the Conservative leaderships of Liz Truss & Rishi Sunak with a view to present research for a forthcoming special collection. Details soon!

An interesting article on the changing character of #Twitter since #Musk bought the platform. Succinctly, since the purchase there has been an increase of hateful content and engagement with hate-related Tweets via "likes". journals.plos.org/plosone/arti...

A fascinating presentation from Dr Travis Coan (Exeter) on contrarian #rhetoric about #climatechange in US #Congressional #speech. The paper was delivered at the Centre of Digital #Politics, #Media & #Democracy (University of #Liverpool). www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mxG...

So, does this make #Trump a Lord Proprietor or Royal Governor, if we're using pre-independence titles. More seriously, it's clearer that the US won't be able to simply resume its pre-Trump global roles given trust is gone. The world may not wish to hear what they have to say, esp Eastern Europe.

Now a plug for #RepOrs sister volume from 2016 - #Democratic Orators from #JFK to #Obama! The book examines a selection of noteworthy speakers from the Democrats, drawing out #rhetorical insights into what made an effective communicator in 20th Cent. US politics. link.springer.com/book/10.1057...

We have a brand new #MA programme coming to @livunipol.bsky.social from Sept! A wide range of exciting, new, & dynamic modules covering #PublicAdministration and Policy! Details can be found here! Contact us if you're interested and have ANY questions! www.liverpool.ac.uk/courses/2025... #FindAnMA

What?! Ironically, we discussed the partitioning of India in British Foreign Policy today & how much of a disaster & loss of life it was. It's not a model! Besides, the historical parallels of forcefully relocating a population isn't a place America wants to go. FFS. www.wsj.com/opinion/if-i...

Week three already! Wow. This week we look at Critical Discourse Analysis and the process by which we examine rhetorical forms. Will be fun! #POLI323

Morning and Afternoon weights are now part of the daily routine, hence the 4.30am start(!) Also good morning, world. Good to see you're still here!! 🌄

Article submitted! Now we wait...

Scissor Sisters #ReturnToOz put to the best Disney horror film of the 1980s - scared a whole generation of us! The film tells the story of Dorothy's delusions chronically manifesting into a narrative of her seeking to fight an evil King and Queen who have taken power. www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaTG...

True!

Interesting day to say the least. Time for some deep thinking. If I drank, it'd be time for a pint of wine, but as it is... I think it's time to read a book instead. There's a 1970s edition of The Hobbit around the bookshelves somewhere. That should take a while! Or maybe a Narnia adventure. Hmmm.
