Blimey. Without going into details, I've unexpectedly spent the past few weeks writing a play script for a competition. I finished the draft today with three days to spare before the deadline, and, just for the moment, I'm flipping pleased with it.

Sometimes when I see the people in power And the awful things they say and do, I ask myself, "why are they doing this?" And I catch myself saying, "I don't know." But the fact is, I do know, all too well, Only the answer to my question is too awful to think of, And it's easier to say: I don't know.

Here’s a thought: how about a “no Ai” badge/mark for books/magazines/etc? Imagine something like the fairtrade mark, but for books. It would guarantee no gen Ai had been used to produce text or images. As a consumer I BLOODY love this idea.

I appreciate that political opinion in these times is mostly about performative cruelty; the main difference of opinion concerns who ought to be subjected to the cruelty. Accordingly, I suddenly feel it is imperative for me to reread “Aunts Aren’t Gentlemen” by P G Wodehouse.

I sit here with lectures to write, and papers to grade, and emails to send, the world around me is ripping apart, and though I know I should be trying desperately trying to mend those rips, I find myself sitting here with lectures to write, and papers to grade, and emails to send.

Very sad to learn of the recent deaths of two crime writers whose works I have enjoyed very much: Peter Lovesey, author of the Inspector Diamond andvInspector Cribb mysteries, not to mention the Bertie novels in which the future King Edward VII is the sleuth...
