After many (many!) years of trying, California FINALLY has a growth model. That's great! But there's more work to do. My latest, in @edsource.org: edsource.org/2025/califor...

Heading to #AEFP2025? We've been thinking a lot about what's happening at the Institute of Education Sciences and what it means for the field. More news coming soon on programming updates. For now, some thoughts with our SREE colleagues www.brookings.edu/articles/cut...

Anyone who cares about NAEP should worry about the abrupt removal of the person most responsible for its technical and operational quality.

NAEP maintains its "gold standard" through a network of contracts and data sources. Protecting NAEP means protecting all of these, or there will be further cuts and delays, and we will be further in the dark.

NCME is proud to offer this additional flexibility for all our members, especially those affected by ongoing uncertainty due to executive actions. Early bird rates are extended through 3/10. See our previous message about flexibility here: www.ncme.org/blogs/nathan... @ncme38.bsky.social #NCME25

Congratulations to my colleagues and newly elected NCME board members Kadriye Ercikan, Sue Lottridge, and Brian Leventhal. These are longstanding contributors of service to @ncme38.bsky.social, and I am grateful for their dedication to leading this organization over the next three years.

We are all overwhelmed by the cuts to the federal government. But if you want to understand the kind of non-ideological cuts to science and knowledge that are happening in our country, please read about these contract terminations at the Department of Education. hechingerreport.org/proof-points...

Actions in support of our NCME members and our measurement mission. @ncme38.bsky.social

If you or someone you know has had a particular research project suspended by recent actions at IES, please get in touch either by DM or by replying here. There are journalists who'd like to report on this.

NCME is proud to be a member of COPAFS and supports this statement. As I indicated in my monthly message last week, our Executive Committee meets tomorrow to discuss how NCME will support members affected directly by these actions. @ncme38.bsky.social

I bet >50% of NCME members would not receive NCME emails without adjusting their email filters (this includes me). Please take 5 minutes to safelist our domains, and stay up-to-date about scholarship, webinars, meetings, jobs, and (due today!) election ballots. @ncme38.bsky.social

NAEP Day represents the efforts of hundreds of @ncme38.bsky.social members to measure educational progress, from its governance (NAGB) and operations (NCES) to partnering state and district leaders, from its alliance of assessment contractors to the many researchers who use NAEP data.

This is highly relevant today. While we can debate the merits of specific 'DEI' policies—some may indeed be misguided—it’s undeniable that racial discrimination persists in this country. The evidence is clear for those willing to engage with it! bidenwhitehouse.archives.gov/cea/written-...

Congratulations to the 22 new members elected to the National Academy of Education! They include many NCME members and two recent past presidents, @derekbriggs.bsky.social and Steve Sireci. They join many other measurement experts and NCME members in the Academy. www.google.com/search?q=sit...

Years ago, my internship in measurement & psychometrics shaped my career. @ncme38.bsky.social maintains a list of these opportunities, thanks to the efforts of our Website and Graduate Student Issues committees. Let's measure beyond proficiency: Colleagues, please consider signing on to our SEDA letter supporting planned improvements to EDFacts data collection. Letter: docs.google.com/document/d/1... Sign-on form: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

My thanks to these excellent NCME citizens for running for the honor of leading this great organization. NCME regular members, please check your email, consider the candidate's statements and records, and cast your vote by 1/31. @ncme38.bsky.social Statements: www.ncme.org/about/news/n...

Faculty representing 38 PhD programs in Educational Measurement are joining an NCME Presidential Summit today and Monday to discuss how @ncme38.bsky.social can magnify the impact of our programs and competencies. Together, we will represent hundreds of faculty and thousands of students.

Ann Telnaes, a longtime political cartoonist for the Washington Post, resigned yesterday after owner Jeff Bezos blocked her cartoon criticizing Trump and the billionaires supporting him from being published. ❤️ if you stand with Ann!

Awards (due 1/10) are important signals and records of contributions to our field. Beyond $1K+ and a plaque, I've seen them guide recruitment, hiring, promotion, and tenure decisions. Our 6 award committees are standing by and eager to learn of the accomplishments of our members.

An holiday appreciation of service from NCME. On behalf of the organization, thank you, colleagues, for all that you do to advance our mission. Happy holidays. @ncme38.bsky.social

To lapsed NCME members who are presenting at our April conference, please renew your membership ASAP to enable early registration and hotel bookings. ncme.site-ym.com/general/regi...? To all, recall that the NCME hotel is the Hilton Denver City Center for forthcoming hotel reservations.

In January, faculty representatives from 33 measurement-related programs will convene at an NCME Presidential Summit to discuss how @ncme38.bsky.social can elevate the field and its competencies. As a student considering measurement 25 years ago, I wish I had known the full breadth of our field.

As someone who has been to a number of @andrewdeanho.bsky.social parties, can confirm that if you're in the #NCME25 community, you should stay for the talks and attend this reception!

The response to the NCME Presidential Summit for Educational Measurement Programs reflects the strength of our field—I've connected with 25 programs in the past week! I look forward to seeing fellow faculty members at tomorrow's open Town Hall as well as the Summit in January. @ncme38.bsky.social

@winterstat.bsky.social, Brian Keller, & I will be leading a half-day workshop on "Comprehensive Statistical Model Evaluation" at the @ncme38.bsky.social conference this April in Denver. Join us to learn how to go beyond goodness-of-fit testing when evaluating the usefulness of measurement models.

#NCME25 is Thursday-Saturday* this year, and some of our best talks will be that last afternoon. To honor presenters and folks who stay, I will host an Informal Presidential Closing Reception with an exclusive gift. Please book your travel and accommodations accordingly! @ncme38.bsky.social

If you are not yet following @ncme38.bsky.social, you're missing out on job announcements, award nominations, new scholarship, News@NCME, and (most importantly?) chances to win NCME swag! Follow along and stay up to date. And my thanks to our social media committee for their great work!

Faculty in measurement programs, consider attending the NCME Presidential Summit for Educational Measurement Programs, where we will discuss whether and how NCME can elevate and unify our programs. If you missed the invite but would like to attend, please contact Andrew Ho.

In January, I am convening an NCME Presidential Summit for Educational Measurement Programs. As a doctoral applicant, I knew only 2-3 programs. There are dozens, all with excellent faculty, students, and contributions. We'll discuss how @ncme38.bsky.social can increase awareness and support.

When @andrewdeanho.bsky.social and I agreed to co-direct HGSE's Education Policy and Analysis program, I never imagined that our students would "honor" us in gingerbread. #hgse #hgse_epa

As NCME President, I volunteered to comment on 12 articles by Past Presidents in a special EMIP issue. Here is my synthesis/commentary, titled, "Measurement must be qualitative, then quantitative, then qualitative again." onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1... Open: dash.harvard.edu/bitstream/ha...

I spent 14 hours over 2 days conducting 1-1 oral exams with my #s52stats students. It was rewarding, exhausting, and important. Let's all uplift oral communication skills, especially in the GPT era. (I have done this for years in my psychometrics course: vimeo.com/497738911 )

Welcome, NCME, to Bluesky! Measurement and psychometrics colleagues, please follow, add the starter pack, and let us know if you would like to be added!

📣 Big news! NCME is on Bluesky! 🦋 To celebrate our arrival, we’ve created a starter pack of ed. measurement folks who are also on Bluesky: go.bsky.app/VMtxa4J ✉️ If you are a current NCME member and would like to be added to the starter pack, please send us a message!

On the Future of State Testing. Am I holding up two fingers to argue a) for peace between assessment-for-instruction and testing-for-accountability camps, b) that no single test can serve these 2 purposes well, or c) that AI is the solution to both? @futureedgu.bsky.social @bonnierok.bsky.social

An U.S. education news reporter starter pack! 🎉 Please let us know if we missed anyone. ❤️ You're going to want to follow these folks to make sense of what promises to be a tumultuous presidential term. go.bsky.app/UccLjhX

Hear the reasoning behind our new NCME dues structure. It was important to me to keep student rates low (first year free!) and to formalize a hardship provision. Reach out if we can help you to remain a member and continue advancing our important mission together. ncme.site-ym.com/general/regi...?

So many faculty and research in education economics/policy have joined this site that I had to create a 2nd starter pack for them. Also, check out the quoted 3 starter packs which now include more folks (including lots of new PhDs, postdocs, and journalists). go.bsky.app/TeqwuKM

Hadn’t seen a women in education policy research starter pack yet. Please let me know if I missed you… still getting my bearings in the new place. go.bsky.app/PixwBrM

I'm thrilled to see this site building a serious community of researchers, writers and policymakers focused on education policy and economics. Below are links to 3 Starter Packs I've made to help you connect with such folks. Please let me know if I've missed you. The volume of requests has been 😮
