This is happening. Make it big. Stand up for Science marches in Washington and nationwide on March 7th. Some local information here: standupforscience2025.org/local-event-...

For The End Climate Silence newsletter this week, I thought about the concept of "resistance." To put it bluntly, I said that "resistance" is a terrible idea to organize on. 🧵

Your regular reminder that the US air & water pollution laws passed in the 60s & 70s -- and the elaborate federal bureaucracy created to administer them -- constitute one of the most successful gov't interventions in history. WILDLY successful. The envy of the world.

It's an honour for me to see the results of our 'Compensation for atmospheric appropriation' study featured as a core part of this important ActionAid campaign. May the African Union's declaration of 2025 as the Year of Reparations bring justice, reconciliation, and compensation so sorely deserved.

German state repression is spiralling out of control. A German climate activist has been banned from becoming a teacher. Here are some justifications from the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts—they are completely nuts: 1/7

Walking in to NASA’s JPL today as a woman in science leadership felt almost like a protest. They can take us off the webpages and the walls, but we will still be here, absolutely crushing it, and supporting our community while we do it. Happy International Day of Women in Science, everyone.

WARNING EVERYONE. BLUESKY IS TEAMING UP WITH A LARGE AI COMPANY. MAKE YOUR DISPLEASURE KNOWN. THEY ARE GOING TO TRY TO GO THE WAY OF TWITTER. GIVE THEM ZERO REST.

Microsoft's own research confirms something that was already pretty obvious: relying on a text generating machine to come up with answers erodes critical thinking, and is a method favoured by those who never liked doing critical thinking in the first place advait.org/files/lee_20...

Excited to announce this new article, a comprehensive review of recent research on post-growth — the science of wellbeing within planetary boundaries. Published in the Lancet Planetary Health with a brilliant team of authors. www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

Not true. Given growth hasn't been improving people's lives in the UK, and the utter lack of evidence that growth can be sufficiently decoupled from it's ecological impacts, another way forward is to promote a post-growth economy that prioritises wellbeing for all within planetary boundaries.

Today’s #CrossBorderRail will involve Deutsche Bahn. Taking wagers on whether I will make it. I’m taking four trains and over 12 hours instead of a 1.5 hour flight to get there. 😇

I stand in solidarity and compassion with everyone at USAID, as well as all organizations and communities worldwide affected by the U.S. administration’s decision to freeze overseas aid. By abandoning them, the administration is abandoning the very spirit that makes the U.S. a great nation. 💔✊

Unquestionably, major policy changes, edicts and directives handed down by the new Trump administration will upend lives. But I've also been struck by the widespread efforts to erase/whitewash history. Stick with me for a pretty shocking series of events from just the past few weeks.

these aren’t the actions of people who are strong these are the actions of weak losers

Now is the time for all my academic colleagues whose identities and/or work are not directly in the crosshairs of this ridiculous administration to step up in solidarity and signal support for your colleagues who are. This pretty much means straight white men not in social sciences or humanities.

It's not a demolition site it's a mass grave. It's not a demolition site it's a crime scene. It's not a demolition site its a homeland. It's not a demolition site it's Palestine. It's not a demolition site it's a genocide.

Must-read new piece from Julia Steinberger (and a good excuse to (re)read some (or all) of her previous posts).

Short presentation (< 15mins) on just how vanishingly small are our remaining carbon budgets for 1.5 & 2°C - both globally & when downscaled to wealthy industrialised nations. am I the only one following US news with considerable apprehension, while hopefully muttering 'checks and balances, right? right?'

I've reported on and written about many a social movement -- ex-Ulster Defence Force soldiers threatening Indigenous kids with violence, white nationalists, Anti-Poverty campaigners, XR, oil industry associations. I've never seen the possible range of action laid out so cleanly.

Fascists need made-up enemies to distract you from what they, and their super-rich funders/bosses, are taking from you. They want you constantly mad, scared and distracted. And they love picking enemies that could help teach you to reason and see through through fascist lies.

1. The UK government’s pursuit of GDP growth at all costs is an assault on our natural wealth, which will impoverish us all. It might be able to massage the headline figures by converting the living world into money, but it does not improve our lives.🧵

I really hope everyone understands what is going on with Elon and Wikipedia. Wikipedia is one of our last remaining bastions of evidence-based consensus reality. The MAGA narrative is fundamentally threatened by evidence-based fact, and Wikipedia is a repository of evidence-based fact.

Misinformation isn't random - it's strategic. 🧵 In the first cross-national comparative study, we examine 32M tweets from politicians. We find that misinformation is not a general condition: it is driven by populist radical right parties. with @julianachueri.bsky.social doi.org/10.1177/1940...

Hi pals. Today I wrote about the unsettling mismatches between what climate models say should be happening and what is actually happening. We're pushing the Earth past the limits of our physical understanding. This is a gift link: www.theatlantic.com/science/arch...

With Zuck now declaring content moderation and factchecking “censorship” in a truly stupendous example of bootlicking, will BlueSky be the only social platform with any guardrails at all on hate speech & disinfo?

These are the key facts everyone needs to know about climate change, according to @yaleclimatecomm.bsky.social. I shared this post across 7 different social media platforms, including FB, LI, Mastodon, Threads, X and Twitter both pre-and post-Musk. Here's how their engagement stacked up. 🧵
