I never thought Friedrich Merz, incoming German chancellor, would play Hugh Grant in Love Actually. But after the German election on Sunday, if anything his lines were even sharper & more devastating than these, from the fictional PM. Inconceivable even a week ago. A US strategic disaster.

“We must especially beware of that small group of selfish men who would clip the wings of the American eagle in order to feather their own nests. … “We know that enduring peace cannot be bought at the cost of other people's freedom”. FDR, January 1941 www.ucl.ac.uk/USHistory/Ma...

A near certain disaster for the USA. Sooner or later. A possible, perhaps probable, disaster for Europe. If so, likely sooner rather than later: the point of maximum danger is in the next several years, starting now. www.ft.com/content/1511...

Could we all, please, stop saying this is caused by social media? It isn’t. And suggesting it is dangerously distracts us from what matters most. Pol Pot didn’t have YouTube or Instagram. Hitler didn’t have Facebook or Twitter. Stalin didn’t have TikTok. A 🧵 /1.

An important point from @pascallth.bsky.social But don’t kid yourself. Europe failed to equip itself militarily. No one but Europe “blocked” that, through complacency, laziness & a degree of free riding. The “EU initiatives” would’ve undermined NATO. High defence spending would have reinforced it.

“In a world increasingly interconnected by powerful technologies, ‘Great Power’ blocs don’t represent order. They represent 1914”. From 19 January. eastangliabylines.co.uk/democracy/am...

Trump-Ukraine A note on favourability ratings. Contrary to what Donald Trump said at his press conference yesterday, Zelensky’s approval rating isn’t 4%. It’s 57%. And net (subtracting disapproval) it’s +20%. Trump’s net approval rating is -1.5% … … 21.5 percentage points lower than Zelensky.

Key point by @rfhaviland.bsky.social ¼ to ⅓ of UK people want or would support authoritarian or dictatorial government. ⅔ to ¾ want democratic, constitutional government under the rule of law. Always. 1½ parliamentary parties represent the first group. All the other parties must stand together.

There’s much understandable outrage at Donald Trump’s apparent blaming of Ukraine for the fact Russia waged aggressive war on it, & invaded. There has been less commentary on his associated claim that “it would have never happened if I had been president”. It’s all very odd indeed. A brief 🧵/1.

The Art of the Meal A masterclass in how to be eaten for lunch. Next chapter: serving up others for dessert. February 18th, 2025: a nadir to remember.
