As we head into Losar, the Tibetan celebration of the new year, may the wood-snake year bring love, peace, happiness, and an end to authoritarian regimes for everyone, everywhere. ཤིང་སྦྲུལ་གནམ་ལོ་གསར་ཚེས་ལ་བཀྲ་ཤིས་བདེ་ལེགས་ཞུ།

My White Band? Average.

Read this great story the other day… 1/2 www.newyorker.com/culture/essa...

I'm still digging through the newest Pew Religious Landscape Survey, but it seems clear enough that one of the biggest differences in Buddhists between the 2007 study and the 2023-24 study is that the newer sample included more Asian Americans.

McGill with this, Calgary and York both cancelling a wide range of programs that include Languages, Religious Studies, and others, and tons of colleges just eradicating entire campuses and departments. It's *dire* up here, folks.

Always fascinated by these and as interested in the framing as the data.

IT’S HERE: Pew’s Religious Landscape Study- @pewresearch.org’s largest single survey! Examine Americans’ beliefs, practices, and political views at the national and state levels, and even in 34 major metropolitan areas. Full report: pewrsr.ch/3EXnfrS Interactive website: pewrsr.ch/3QBx2X0

Normally this time of year the maple trees would be tapped and the sap running. I'm taking a sapping sabbatical this year, but last year I had a webcam setup in the sugar shack to watch the sap boil.

#ManuscriptMonday nazi hunting edition. First 2 folios of The Conquest of Germany: a modern narrative in which the mythic Tibetan warrior hero Gesar of Ling travels to Germany (phyi gling 'jar) to fight Hitler's reich. It was written by the Eighth Khamtrul Rinpoche (1931-1980). 1/

Amazing lecture today @Wesleyan by archaeologist Steven Sidebotham describing his finds of c. 1st century Buddhist & Hindu statues at the Egyptian port of Berenike. Amazing work that is still turning up new materials.

Who knew Leon, like Gerry Fleck, has two left feet?

Glossy black Tibetan manuscripts like this copy of the Diamond Sutra use a pigment that combines soot, yak-hide glue, and animal brains, from either yak, sheep or goat, kneaded together by hand 🐮🧠📜 #manuscriptmonday blogs.loc.gov/preservation...

This is excellent, on the erasure of the name "Tibet."

Sad news. And this is depressing: “the difficulty of learning these languages had “a deterrent effect” on prospective students.” Who needs those funny languages to study religion anyway?
