As a software engineer, I get the appeal of LLM-assisted programming. You get this wonderful cross between a wise mentor, your own unpaid intern, and a trash can full of rabid raccoons

Strong piece by @michellegoldberg.bsky.social on the attacks on higher education. Thanks for the shoutout! www.nytimes.com/2025/02/14/o...

A first! I was asked to review a manuscript for an ACS journal that is fabricated and/or AI generated. So many "tortured phrases", the methodology makes no sense, references are irrelevant, etc. If you like ultrasonic pseudopotentials or converging the self-concordant field, this paper is for you!

Somehow, #Pennsylvania is not on the list, despite over $2bn in NIH funding? Just called the AG and governor's office.

In 2018, I published a paper that focused in part on gender biases with RateMyProfessors data. When it got picked up by a few websites, the amount of angry and hate-filled messages I got from this was insane. I don't envy those doing important research on social issues in today's climate...

🙃

“The excellence of America’s leading research universities, including Princeton, depends not only on attracting talented people from all backgrounds but also on ensuring that they can thrive on our campuses,” President Chris Eisgruber wrote.

My plan to ignore politics for four years is going very poorly.

OneDrive just corrupted my NSF proposal, but Microsoft is no match for my extreme number of backups! Phew...! 😅

With grad admissions in full swing, my one piece of unsolicited advice to students is that it's okay to trust your gut feeling with this one. It's tempting to try and over-quantify the process, but it's arguably the qualitative things ("vibes", if you will) that matter most.

What is the obsession with LLMs and writing everything as a list?

Thinking back to the time where I almost got MC Hammer to visit Berkeley. Ugh, so close. At least I can say Hammer and I have emailed and DM'd one another. 😂

Strangely feeling like I have things mostly under control... for now. Somewhat ominous though. 😅

And now it is gone... 🫠

There are three ways to ultimate success: The first way is to be kind. The second way is to be kind. The third way is to be kind -Fred Rogers

Another step towards having an NSF-designated "conflict of interest" with every single person in my field 😅😭
