Mid century liberals managed the surplus population of deindustrialization and secular stagnation with higher education and prisons; Trump, Kennedy and company are just going with prison and death.

HOT off the press: A MUST READ somber assessment of the war on American higher ed & the fight to save it. From Harvard AAUP member Dennis Hogan in the @defector.bsky.social “In the war between colleges & Trump, too many Americans are choosing Trump.“ defector.com/the-nih-cuts...

In this essay, Alberto Toscano and Brenna Bhandar explore how the ideology of real estate has come to find direct geopolitical expression in Trump’s drive to acquire territory as property—starkly exemplified by Trump's egregious “Gaza development plan.” proteanmag.com/2025/02/27/s...

“The forces arrayed against scientific inquiry, once dispersed, are united and organized.”

oh you know, just some of my thoughts on monsterfucking thanks to my student Jacyln Legge for getting me into Ruby Dixon and @brandyjensen.bsky.social, a great editor @defector.bsky.social

not enough people are talking about how they turned Rubio into flat stanley

I love this essay because Dennis reminds us that we can't say higher ed research develops the cancer treatment for your grandmother without also saying that we need to make it so that your grandmother can afford that treatment, and so on and so on.

Timely episode of The Dig: @olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social, @keeanga.bsky.social & @itsmccarthy.bsky.social on MAGA/DOGE war on woke; complicity of bankrupt liberal identity politics; centrality of various oppressions to capitalist class domination and struggles against it thedigradio.com/podcast/woke...

A new McCarthy era is upon us. Stupid, depressing, and dangerous as ever. I wonder whose name will carry the dunce cap in the history books. Too many are complicit. I’ll need to find upset and action, but for now I’m feeling grief at the dehumanization inherent to all this.
