Enormously harmful to the future of science. My heart breaks for these students who were excited to learn and experience research firsthand.

Why aren’t you here? Want to show the administration how you feel? Show up. Now. Lincoln Memorial. Please.

I was just added to someone’s list called “engaged scientists in climate change” and for a minute, I misread it as “enraged scientists in climate change” … which would probably be 100% accurate …

Apparently the gutting of the National Science Foundation is underway at the moment. "More to come." One can debate whether cuts are warranted, but the mindless, know-nothing fashion in which they are being carried out is inexcusable. This will damage US science for generations.

This is a Big Fantastic Deal.

Essential infrastructure is hard to replicate - @noaa.gov weather network would cost billions & take decades for private companies to match. Even wealthy nations rely on NOAA's data. For developing nations facing climate risks, it's impossible - making this freely available global data critical.

I was laid off this morning from USFWS as part of the sweeping DOGE cuts to probationary employees across the Dept. of Interior. To say I'm devastated doesn't even scratch the surface-I'm losing my dream job working with pallid sturgeon on the Missouri River. Solidarity with all my fed workers. 💔🐟

NASA embraced diversity. Trump’s DEI purge is hitting space scientists hard. by @alexwitze.bsky.social www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Trump and the GOP are in a full-out war against science. I have a lot to say about that. badastronomy.beehiiv.com/p/the-attack... 🧪 🔭

I know Rose, and this SUCKS. Interestingly, however, it's still on the NASA site *in Spanish*. www.nasa.gov/universe/pas...

The Trump Administration's list of censored scientific terms that get NSF grant proposals flagged contains "women” and “female”, but no mention of “men” or “male.” There is “black” and “indigenous” on this list, but no “white.” The only identity not censored is mine. youtu.be/dHXbpj1Z3UU

Is this complying in advance? Or simply using the flimsiest excuse to stop doing something that never truly aligned with their values in the first place?

Elon Musk could singlehandedly cover the entire budget of USAID. He made that much SINCE THE ELECTION. But he'd rather chase his own reflection and watch the poor die. I can think of nothing more evil.

Dickheads of Gargantuan Ego (DOGE) have now gained access to the IT servers at the NOAA. They have taken down several department websites, including the website that stores global CO2 data from observations taken in Hawaii. That data is still accessible here. keelingcurve.ucsd.edu

You can try to erase whichever members of our NASA family you want on our websites, but you can never erase our achievements. Imagine trying to hide America’s history and accomplishments in space of all places. gizmodo.com/nasa-ordered...

Pushing live production code cooked up by some young coders over a week of sleepness nights in place of a legacy system that is fundamental to the operation of the US government is against every programming best practice.

Elon Musk, the most privileged man in the world, seeking to shut down USAID and make it more difficult for one of the most privileged nations in the world to distribute foreign aid to those who need it most is despicable, but not unexpected given his background and behavior.

Trump has now cut all funding to South Africa. Over racist propaganda probably from Elon.

If you missed it, here’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s, quite sincerely, historic speech. It’s for, and is galvanizing, Canadians but he also speaks very directly to our allies in the US. Please hear us out. I do find myself thinking how much I’d give up, and do, for this imperfect country.

You can email your entire Congressional delegation in one stop at democracy.io Here's a possible script:

Africa actually does matter, just saying bbc.com/news/article...

NEW: Vera Rubin was a pioneering female astronomer. The federal webpage for an observatory named for her now excludes mention of efforts to diversify science. “I’m sure Vera would be absolutely furious,” said a co-author of a biography of Rubin. By @lisalsong.bsky.social

#workingfromhome is good for society. Why? It opens the talent pool to everyone. It #sharesthewealth across regions. It helps #lowerhomeprices because people don't have to cluster near work. It helps #SaveThePlanet from transit emissions. And you never get #stuckintraffic ever again.

You know what is, to me, a modern cathedral? A flagship science mission spacecraft. 100% hand built, utterly unique, labored on by thousands, made with precious materials, lodged in people’s hearts forever even if they never see it again, producing awe and inspiration.

Any funding used to get better science education to communities in underserved areas is cancelled. What this means: - Many people are losing their jobs or being forced to go part-time (scientists and educators) - Many teachers will no longer get professional development or classroom resources

You can say, “gravity isn’t real,” but if you step off the cliff, you’re still going down. And if you convince other people it’s not real, you are responsible for what happens if they make decisions based on the information you withheld.

“A man dies when he refuses to stand up for that which is right. A man dies when he refuses to stand up for justice. A man dies when he refuses to take a stand for that which is true.”

For all of us space policy nerds who have been speaking about the importance of how we go continue to go to space, calling it America’s manifest destiny to plant a flag on Mars rings all sorts of alarm bells. I wrote about what a vision like this could mean here: link.springer.com/chapter/10.1....

Science doesn’t always give you the answers you want, but it does give you the answers you need. Also, do not lick the science.

The Paris Agreement sought to keep global temperature rise below 1.5°C above pre-industrial averages. We failed that benchmark in 2024, which was also the hottest year on record. Read more: www.mesoscalenews.com/p/15c-limit-...

I won’t be smearing shit on walls or beating police officers with flags at the US Capitol tomorrow even though my preferred Presidential candidate did not win…

This strikes me as bad.

We never proved ourselves as Americans worthy of the dignity, goodness, charity, and prophetic insight of Jimmy Carter. And, in the last, we disappointed him once again by electing a monster to be president. President Carter had a good life. I weep for us.

A thread of good resources on Africa, about which I find very few even well educated Americans know scandalously little. First of all, Africa is a continent! with dozens of countries! And even more cultures and languages! It's amazing. So challenge yourself to learn something about Africa this year:
