“Canada must undergo a massive rethink of our politics, economy, and international relations to meet the challenge […] to forge a new and independent path means breaking out of our partisan boxes and building a new national consensus.” charlieangus.substack.com/p/no-return-...

Stunned that the CBC would legitimize annexation as if it were up for a friendly debate.

Spent today spinning up a new Laravel env on shared hosting. Not interested in doing DevOps stuff + wanted something local in a Canadian datacenter. This feels like a happy medium.

“Having an after-work hobby is linked to better wellbeing and may play a part in reducing work-related stress. Creative activities in particular are known to encourage a sense of personal fulfilment through developing new skills.” getpocket.com/explore/item...

For anyone who makes content of any type, if you don't have one, think about starting a newsletter. You can be web-first, but newsletters are (even in 2025) such a good way to reach your audience. And if you have a small audience, it generally means they'll be an engaged audience!

"The mediascape is becoming a stormy sea of anxiety, envy, delusion, and rage. Our attention is being redirected in surprising and often worrying ways. [...] The panic over lost attention is, however, a distraction." www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...

Please take a minute to watch this. This is who we are as a nation. Our ancestors fought for the freedom of others. Today we fight for the values of our land and people. Canadians don't run. We never have. True. North. Strong. Free. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AuK...

"B2B marketers are seeing a 15-20% decrease in organic traffic as AI answers replace link traffic from SEO and AI vendors take traffic from Google. Not only is this decrease an issue of inbound volume, the implications are even bigger." www.carilu.com/p/2025-tech-...

1. Programming gives you the joy of hacking. 2. Testing raises confidence in its correctness. 3. Documenting helps users understand it all. In the case of public software, like OSS, to me, a complete programmer commits to the three of them.

" I’m a person who gets frustrated about what’s happening in the real world, too, but finding your own center amid chaos is way better than being stressed about something that won’t change overnight." ~ @tedium.co (Build the things you want to see in the world.) tedium.co/2025/01/25/w...

Today’s ricochet of “will they or won’t they?” coverage re: tariffs was headache inducing. My hope is that, if nothing else, this is a wake up call for more interprovincial trade within Canada, and more deal making with our international allies in the UK, EU, APAC and elsewhere.

“AI has no inherent value — you won't see ROI just because you have AI. Like any tool, its worth comes from how skillfully you wield it and how well you integrate it into your existing processes.” www.animalz.co/blog/animalz...

“Beyond caring about creativity, it is obvious in talking to [Clay] team members (and also just looking on Linkedin seeing people talk about the company) that they are REALLY into the product - what it does and how it impacts customers.” open.substack.com/pub/nextplay...

“Since just after ChatGPT was released, I’ve been fascinated by artificial intelligence’s missing user interface … getting a sense of what chatbots can do, and how to guide them, has required a frustrating process of trial and error.” www.platformer.news/deepseek-des...

"The sea of sameness is vast, but it’s not inevitable. By daring to think differently, by designing a new category, by rallying people around a meaningful cause, you don’t just survive—you lead. You matter. And that’s a future worth fighting for." www.audiencehaus.com/p/break-free...

“If no one developed a mechanism for sharing written ideas across space and time then for what possible purpose would we even need the Internet?” thehistoryoftheweb.com/dialogues/pr...

This is SHOCKING. Among everything else that’s despicable about this, ITS A CLEAR ADMISSION THAT THEY KNOW THAT DOING THIS WILL OBVIOUSLY ENDANGER LIVES. People rode bikes on these streets before the bike-lanes (albeit fewer) and they will again after. The inevitable blood will be on Ford’s hands.

Date night! Shoutout Town Brewery in Whitby. They’re a gem of Durham Region and east-end GTA. #toronto #ontario #durhamregion

About links, bluesky loves them. Please unlearn the link-in-reply tricks you've been doing elsewhere and proudly share your blog posts, videos, or any other external link in your top posts so we can all go and visit your fancy websites and then get back here to discuss and repost them. Thanks!

If you’re in an institution doing any kind of DEI work, the most important thing to do right now is simply call it something else. Change it to “Community Outreach” & then keep on doing the same important work. When they outlaw Community Outreach rebrand it as “Strategic Partnerships,” rinse/repeat.

“If anything, this new wave of AI-generated "crappy apps" will create even more opportunities for talented builders who care about quality.” — @justinjackson.ca 👏👏👏 justinjackson.ca/ai-build-saas

Silver lining of this American <> Canadian tension over trade is that it’s finally giving us a blunt moment of reflection on what it means to be a sovereign nation. Hearing more convos about buying Canadian, inter-provincial trade, and diversifying our economy than I ever have before.
