1/ Concerns for long-term bird populations are revealed in the latest Waterbirds in the UK report out now. Discover more ⬇️ and read the report ➡️ www.bto.org/webs-annual-report #Ornithology #citsci @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social @rspb.bsky.social @naturescot.bsky.social

Should be great, sadly I can't make it.

Species 8,112: Strongylogaster macula (Blemished Fern-sawfly), swept from bracken in Hampshire last week. Seems to be locally distributed across much of Britain, but much scarcer than S multifasciata (the commonest) and S xanthocera (which I also netted at the same spot).

Always nice to complete a set. Here's Subilla confinis, my 4th and (as far as we currently know) final snakefly for Britain. Netted in Hampshire last week. Always a thrill to find a snakefly in the net, only my 10th individual so quite lucky I guess to get the lot already.

Lots of aphids on Sycamore at the moment. I think this one is Periphyllus acericola, with the black thorax and black pterostigma, although any corrections welcome @norwichbirder.bsky.social

The @ukceh.bsky.social Biological Records Centre isn't yet on Bsky, so I'm passing on the message that there are problems with iRecord, with pages failing to load properly. It's being investigated and updates are being applied, but there is still work to do. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Species 8,090: Andricus quercusramuli, the Cottonwool Gall, in Hampshire today.

Another Four-dotted Clothes Moth (Triaxomera fulvimitrella), or "Clearwing Companion" as I now propose it to be called.

Species 8,088: Stictoleptura scutellata (Large Black Longhorn Beetle), caught in flight in the New Forest today by a large dead tree.

Species 8,087: Brachypalpus laphriformis, another special hoverfly of dead wood in the New Forest today. No pic sadly so here it is by Steven Falk www.flickr.com/photos/63075...

Species 8,086: Triaxomera fulvimitrella (Four-spotted Clothes Moth), also came to the CUL pheromone lure today. Non-target species do come to these lures. (In fact, I have a sawfly that came to VES too that might be interesting, still to check).

Species 8,085: Synanthedon culiciformis (Large Red-belted Clearwing), came to pheromone lure (CUL) in the New Forest this afternoon.

Species 8,084: Caliprobola speciosa (Green Forest Hoverfly). Crippler. Three seen in the New Forest today, stunning.

Zig-zag Elm Sawfly, Aproceros leucopoda. Yesterday @vannabartlett.bsky.social and I saw a couple of adult sawflies as well as larvae and feeding signs, at a known site on Waterworks Road in Norwich. www.naturespot.org/species/zig-... www.forestresearch.gov.uk/tools-and-re...

Back in Norfolk now but nice to have found two nationally scarce beetles yesterday, on the Stansted Estate in West Sussex; the fungus weevil Platystomos albinus and the false blister beetle Oedemera femoralis. Both species being new for the 10 km square according to the NBN Atlas.

Just identified my 250th British sawfly, Cephus nigrinus (Wood Stem-sawfly), from RHS Hyde Hall in Essex this week. Not an especially rare species, but much more local than the other two Cephus. @panspecieslisting.bsky.social

Popped down to Ditchingham for a cheeky bee twitch, thanks to @timstrudwick.bsky.social. Sphecodes albilabris (Giant Blood Bee), super easy to identify on size/colour combination. New to Britain in 2020, seemingly starting to spread now. Species 8,071 for Britain for me, and my 162nd bee.

There are currently colonies of shiny black aphids on the Red Campion plants in the garden. These are Brachycaudus, of which B. lychnidis and B. klugkisti are very similar. To separate them you need a close look at the 3rd antennal segment - mine turned out to be klugkisti.

Another weekend and another Giant Blood Bee at a new Norfolk site - Broome Heath. Another recent UK colonist, Lasioglossum sexstrigatum, was there too. These two seem to like the same places.

Cool conditions in the New Forest today but made this dozy Median Wasp (Dolichovespula media) a little more approachable

Saw my first mini-Roesel's today in Hampshire too

Classy new longhorn today, this looks to be Mesosa nebulosa (White-clouded Longhorn Beetle), beaten from oak on the edge of the New Forest today @theponker.bsky.social

The New Forest is like another country. Arrived at our AirBNB and had a short walk around the lanes. About 20 mins later, I'm up to 7 singing Firecrests and 4 Hawfinches. It's basically France

Selling a pair of Swarovski EL 10x42 bins, 12 years old, very good condition, £873 no offers see below #birdinggear www.ebay.co.uk/itm/13570284...

Interesting distribution map for the Pteromalid wasp Callitula pyrrhogaster. Due to the efforts of a local band of naturalists, Shropshire is apparently the UK epicentre for this tiny wasp. These have mainly been found by suction sampling and very keen eyes.

How many people contribute records to county and local bird reports in Wales? How much data do those county recorders manage and through which channels? How wide is the coverage? More detail in Alt Text. Number-wrangling while I'm writing the @birdsinwales.bsky.social 2024 report. #BirdingWales
