Born #OnThisDay in 1850 was pioneering Russian mathematician Sofia Kovalevskaya. She was the first woman to gain a doctorate in mathematics and was one of the first women to work as an editor at a scientific journal. #WomenInSTEM

The magnetic North Pole is drifting towards Siberia and speeding up 😱🌏 Scientists believe we may be nearing another pole reversal. Understanding these changes is crucial for protecting satellites, communication systems, and power grids. Geomagnetism impacts modern life 🛰️ #Geomagnetism #SpaceScience

🌞🤩👏 The Parker Solar Probe is currently undergoing its historic closest approach to the Sun. It reached the closest point, perihelion, at 11:52 UTC today, less than 15 minutes ago. Wow! What an amazing mission, and what an amazing moment! Keep on going, Parker! 🫣 😱 😮

@davidwehle.bsky.social The demo is amazing, and I can't wait for the full release, but do you have any tips to prevent motion sickness? I've tried adjusting the fov.

🌍 The Joint IAGA-IASPEI Scientific Assembly 2025 abstract submissions are now open! Consider submitting an abstract to our session on Ground-Based Geomagnetic Observatories and Automated Instrumentation (A05): 🔗 iaga-iaspei-2025.org/iaga-symposia/ #Geomagnetism #SpaceWeather #SpaceScience

🚨Aurora alert! Ever heard of the anti-black aurora? It’s a bright twin that drifts alongside the mysterious black aurora, flipping sides unpredictably! 🌌✨ My study reveals their unique electron energies & motions. Check it out! 🧪💡 #AuroraScience www.nature.com/articles/s41...

🌍 Could a polar flip be coming? 🤔 The last complete magnetic field reversal, where the north magnetic pole moved toward the Southern geographic pole, was 780,000 years ago. Today, the South Atlantic Anomaly is growing, and some believe it hints at a new geomagnetic transition 🌍🧲🧭 #Geomagnetism

Scientists, academics, researchers: We’re excited to share that @altmetric.com is now tracking mentions of your research on Bluesky! 🧪

So it’s day 2 of #25DaysofCrustmas - and we have a teeny tiny Crustacean called Idiomysis tsurnamali from the Red Sea. This little mysis shrimp hangs around in swarms near anemones - and are a pain to photograph. #Inverts #MarineLife

I felt like I accidentally rolled my eyes at someone on the tube and they saw me, so I decided to start rolling my eyes a lot, pretending I had some sort of eye problem to try to explain/disguise the first accidental eye roll and they probably think I’m a maniac.

in everything imposingly beautiful, strength has much to do with the magic

Earlier I went through my sister's kitchen junk drawer. If anyone needs a CD to reinstall Windows 95, hit me up.

What is the great globe itself but a Loose-Fish?

Your honor the boys were back in town

Back to #Auroras 🌌 Did you know there's another way to infer auroral energy besides optical data? Enter the Incoherent Scatter Radar (ISR) 📡 Con: Its field of view is tiny compared to all-sky cameras. Pro: You get to work with a radar that measures 10/10 on the awesome scale 🤟

🌍 What’s a magnetic reversal, aka magnetic “flip”? It’s when the magnetic North and South poles swap! 🧭 Recorded in rocks, these irregular flips weaken the field and can even create extra poles -- this has happened numerous times throughout geological history 😱🧲 #Geomagnetism #SpaceScience

Happy Sunday from the Sun! ☀️ We have quite a few active regions spread across the disk, but based on complexity, AR3906 has the highest probability for producing a notable flare (25% for M-class & 5% for X-class). For now, we watch and wait!

Serengeti National Park ,Tanzania 📍🇹🇿

We finally have some excitement in the active regions on the Earth-facing disk! AR 3905 and 3906 have just rotated onto the eastern limb and are relatively magnetically complex. Let’s watch out for flares and CMEs from these ARs as they move into the Earth strike zone!

HUGE explosion just now WOW! Second burst of the night. Intense movement. Just wait until you see the videos I took of this one. I’ll be posting them tomorrow.

Best day ever 🐶

The #Antarctic ice shelf where South Africa's research vessel, the SA Agulhas II, transfers supplies that will travel approximately 160 kilometres inland to the SANAE IV research base.

Resharing these here to hopefully prevent as much misinformation and/or confusion as possible. Solar flares and coronal mass ejections are not phenomena that can be referenced interchangeably. They are completely different phenomenon with completely different impacts. ☀️

SANSA and the Ethiopean SSGI have installed a magnetometer station in Ethiopia, currently the only dual scalar/vector magnetometer station on the magnetic dip equator in the African sector. This will enable African space scientists to measure the local activity of #geomagnetic storms. #SpaceWeather

The South Atlantic Anomaly is where Earth's magnetic field is 30% weaker than average at the same latitude. Think of its field as an umbrella protecting us from 'rain' (i.e. charged particles and cosmic rays). The SAA is like a small hole letting more 'rain' through to lower altitudes. #SpaceWeather

A significant filament eruption from the Sun yesterday! We’d been watching this one for several days, waiting for the eruption - and here it is! #spaceweather

GUYS! In a collaborative effort between NASA, Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI), and Italy's National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF), a coronagraph was just installed on the freakin International Space Station!! HOW COOL! 🔭 science.nasa.gov/mission/codex/
