“The weather forecasts you see on TV or the severe storm alerts you get from your apps are powered by a federal science agency that’s in line for some of the most drastic cuts proposed by the Trump administration so far.” www.vox.com/climate/4007...

Hey: If you made it through the week, and you tried to do some things to help other people — large or small — where you could, and you need to hear it, I’m here to tell you thank you. Get some rest. Figure out today, then figure out tomorrow.

THE RESIST LIST IS HERE. Proud my team just started this @resistlist.bsky.social, which will list actions that happened and that are slated to happen.

According to the Houston Chronicle, public health officials in Texas think that there are likely 200-300 people now infected with measles. If confirmed, this outbreak is already out of control. H/t to @mickiemo.bsky.social for the heads up. www.chron.com/news/houston...

What happens to the sociology of joy now? Sociology’s “joy turn” came at an interesting time. Joy was a main theme of the ASA conference just 6 months ago. A lot has changed since then. If anything, studying joy is even more urgent in this moment. Will our field step up to the challenge?

Strong rumor with credible sourcing: DOJ has put all of public integrity line attorneys in a room and told them they have an hour for someone to choose who will sign motion to dismiss and if nobody does, they will all be fired. The nastiest strong-arming in DOJ history by a long shot.

Section 504, which is a crucial piece of legislation that protects disabled ppl, is under attack. We must do everything in our power to protect the rights of disabled ppl. If you are living in one of the 17 states, please reach out to AG's office and ask them to please drop this lawsuit. #section504

If you live in AK, AL, IN, FL, KS, KY, LA, ME, MO, OH, and SC, your reps are on the Senate HELP Committee which has jurisdiction over NIH. Write to them pointing out the jobs and money coming to your state from NIH: www.unitedformedicalresearch.org/nih-in-your-... describe impact of NIH cuts on....

When someone says “why isn’t anyone DOING anything,” it sometimes seems to me that they’re looking for a superheroic action that saves the day rather than the kind of steady, human-scale work that actually is happening and could use your help if you have some time

DOGE is reportedly threatening NOAA with massive staff and budget cuts. NOAA houses the National Weather Service and National Hurricane Center, which produce forecasts and warn people about storms. This attack on public safety is ripped straight from the pages of Project 2025.

Lost my CDC contract after a visit from DOGE. I feel like I’m in the dirt (or TBH eating a pint of ice cream on a couch crying). But here’s the thing: Pushing people down—especially those with heart, purpose, and love for public service—doesn’t mean they stay down. It’s literally against their DNA.

from Meditations in an Emergency, my new newsletter, day three: But I do not believe the people of this country will submit to the destruction and the attempts at dictatorship. We are not submitting now. meditations-in-an-emergency.ghost.io/we-are-not-w...

Highly recommend this excellent podcast as essential context for understanding the big picture of what is happening in the US. It uses examples from similar autocratic episodes around the world to highlight patterns and offers ways to fight back. open.spotify.com/episode/47iN...

You say: they shutdown USAID. You mean: they illegally broke in to a secure facility over a weekend, hijacked sensitive data on vulnerable people and US businesses, destroyed property Americans paid for, cut off resources for sick and hungry families, and fired Americans across the country.

president of California Citrus Mutual: “We’re in the middle of our citrus harvesting ... Yesterday about 25% of the workforce, today 75% didn’t show up.” calmatters.org/economy/2025...

Something disability justice activists have been screaming about for the last five years and some of you may just now be realizing: eugenicists believe disease is good. They believe themselves part of the “superior” race and that disease clears out the poor and unworthy. 1/

Today’s been a helluva day for public health. The muzzling of public health information at CDC, the shutting down of DEI-related research projects and training programs, council meetings and scientific peer review panels on hold. A scorched earth approach to population health science and training.

One point about resisting fascism and the National Cathedral incident: Virtually no one had heard of Mariann Edgar Budde two days ago. The heroes and inspirational leaders in this moment will not be the Chuck Schumers of the world. It'll be normal, brave people who didn't want it. Lean into this.

Sergeant Gonell @sergeantaqgo.bsky.social sent me this picture. This is his call log. Each call is an automated Dept of "Justice" notification saying "The defendant you testified against is being released from the dept of corrections." Each defendant assaulted him.

The first visual of the Trump presidency at the border; a sobbing woman in Ciudad Juárez stands outside the Paso Del Norte port of entry, clutching a pole as she weeps having learned that her 1:00PM appointment for a chance to seek asylum in the US has been cancelled. x.com/arelisrhdz/s...

as LA is burning, a swath of the country is recovering from an ice storm, Alabama is preparing for up to 6” of snow and I’m praying for the TX power grid, a reminder: we don’t need climate action just for future generations, we need it now. the climate crisis is here, all around us

Having survived the Lahaina fire storm and now watching the LA fire storm, I am convinced we need to retire the "once in a lifetime" characterization. We are living in the time of climate change & insufficient infrastructure investment. This will happen increasingly & we need to meet that reality.

All love and peace and safety to Los Angeles, my home town ❤️💔 May this be the moment that we realize it’s easier, more fun, more beautiful, to care for each other than it is to abandon each other. And may the future be built on this foundation, in LA, and everywhere, amen.

The planet is on fire and we elected arsonists.

@sfdirewolf.bsky.social "feels, more than ever, like Cassandra of Greek mythology, shouting dire warnings that no one is willing to hear or believe. 'It’s not an honor to be on the forefront of social commentary that makes most ppl with privilege uncomfortable.'” www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

Health officials downplayed COVID risk by overemphasizing "underlying health conditions," leading many to drop their guard. Most people have "underlying health conditions." Anyone can be vulnerable. Everyone should take precautions. It's malpractice that they are minimizing bird flu the same way.

I am getting questions from students about how they can make a difference in light of... recent events. FWIW my core advice is always this: develop skills. Learn how to write. Learn how to talk to people. Etc. A belief that your views are correct and righteous, without more, isn't enough.

If there’s one story you read today — make it this one by Jane Mayer for The New Yorker. Holy. Crap.

From politicians to VC firms, everyone is falling out of love with the massive, money-oriented, global technology titans. In their place, we have the chance to build something open and trustworthy. @meredithmeredith.bsky.social writes:

HOLDING IT TOGETHER made the @npr.org Books We Love list! It's tagged as a staff pick, a book club idea, and an eye-opening read. As Erica Liao wrote: "Some of the interviews may ruin your day with how angry they make you... [but there's] also a healthy dose of hope." apps.npr.org/best-books/#...

From @propublica.org - "Despite the passage of decades, most segregation academies across Mississippi remain vastly white — far more so than the counties where they operate, federal private school surveys show."

An exciting new sociological study contextualizing how unemployment matters to suicide rates just came out in the American Sociological Review by my colleagues BK Lee (NYU) and Bernice Pescosolido.../1 doi.org/10.1177/0003...

Today, on #WorldChildrensDay, I read that at least 106 children with the name Layan, meaning tenderness, have been killed in Gaza. We do not have to be this way. We can choose care over cruelty + violence. We can build a world that cultivates tenderness instead of fighting so hard to extinguish it.

I appreciate all of you who use the Alt-text description for the images you post. As a blind dude I feel so much more included here. For those of you who forget: Did you know there’s a reminder in Settings/Accessibility to toggle on & then it won’t let you post image without Alt-text. Thanks 🙏😎

Now that everyone is here: our Environmental Studies department is starting an interdisciplinary PhD program - apps are due Dec 15! If you know anyone interested in combining theory and methods from across social+natural science/humanities (and engineering!) pls share! as.nyu.edu/departments/...

fascism is stopped when enough people say one of two things: 1) "nah, I'm not doing that" 2) "nah, you're not doing that" a lot of people want to imagine how they'll say the second thing, but you should *really* start practicing the first one

An “initial purchase” of 500 Trump Bibles for the Oklahoma Department of Education’s Office of Religious Liberty and Patriotism. Some real golden-calf shit happening here. www.oklahoman.com/story/news/e...
