Labour-run Lambeth is maybe a £billion in debt? Some of this is due to a reduced central government grant and more homelessness and care spend. But some is also due to waste on housing projects, spend on a swanky new town hall and blocking out of scrutiny... love.lambeth.gov.uk/lambeth-exte...

How curious. On three different days I've received notifications to tell me the post below has been 'liked' by @mailbird but, when I've looked, there's been no like there!

Recently bought four books from Books Please. Took eight days to arrive - in part as each had to be ordered from the publisher or a wholesaler - but delivery was free and the books cost approx. 20% less than Amazon would have charged.

UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves call for Heathrow Airport expansion is based on report ordered by Heathrow owners. Data supplied by the airport itself. Independence? Methodology previously rejected by Transport Dept as not fit for purpose. Govt policy based on report not publicly available.

Is this over the top or not?

Any recommendations for an email client on a Windows desktop? Recently signed up with Mailbird but it's either very expensive or, for the free version, very restrictive (e.g. one email account only; can't read forwarded emails).

To move a crossing on Streatham High Road approx. 50m south (to be by Gracefield Gdns), TfL will widen a section of the central reservation by a metre. The width of the northbound carriageway between Becmead Av and Woodbourne Av will be reduced to accommodate. Google Maps Street View from July 2024.

Israel has destroyed the last remaining hospital in northern Gaza. We have witnessed the total decimation of Palestinian healthcare, met with silence from political leaders who refuse to acknowledge the horrors they have enabled. This is the dehumanising reality of genocide.

From a sample size of not very many my favourite mince pies this year are Aldi All Butter Almond Mince Pies. Taste and texture are fantastic and they're not too expensive.

Whatever happened to the Wholemeal Cafe on Shrubbery Road in Streatham? I remember it selling robust, decent-portion-size, vegetarian food from maybe 1980-something until a few years ago. One time they had a lunchtime offer of a main dish - e.g. Homity Pie - with a mixture of salads for £5 or so.

Interview with Ed Conway about his book, Material World, and, I guess, how the world currently functions and is reliant on scarce resources and fragile interdependencies. Fascinating and seemingly important.

Algernon Newton's night scenes are even more curious than his paintings in daytime; he always aimed at more than accuracy. Buildings were for him, living entities, vulnerable to the ravages of time, neglect or weather, period curiosities, timeless and unreal. 'Dovehouse Street, Chelsea.' (1920)

1/ Ok, so instead of just making jokes about the EU Reset, I wanted to do a very simplified thread on: - what the actual problem is Keir Starmer is trying to solve; - the options on the table; and - why this shit is hard. This will be very long. I'm sorry. Let's get wonky.
