is wishing the happiest of birthdays to writer Doug Moench.

Little Lulu first appeared in a one panel strip in the Saturday Evening Post on February 23, 1935. She was created by Marjorie Henderson Buell.

Going through old files, I ran across this idea I pitched to Marv Wolfman when we first relaunched Adventures of Superman. Sadly it went nowhere at that time:(

Artist Billy Graham (July 1, 1935-April 4, 1997), most known for his work at Warren Magazines, and his great runs on Luke Cage: Hero For Hire, Black Panther, & Sabre. #BlackHistoryMonth

FOOM #12 (1975) showcases the process of cover creation for #Invaders #5 (1976), tracing its evolution from layouts by Ed Hannigan to pencils by Jack Kirby and finally inks by Joe Sinnott.

Today is the birthday of writer and artist Creig Flessel (Feb. 2, 1912-July 17, 2008). He is most remembered by comic fans for his work on the Wesley Dodd’s Sandman, creating the Shining Knight, and his cover work for DC Comics in the Golden Age.

A fun photo of comic book forefathers: Jerry Siegel, Superman’s co-creator and a Golden Age pioneer, and Julius Schwartz, who reshaped DC’s Golden Age heroes into a sci-fi-focused Silver Age. Their relationship appears friendly in this early 1990s photo.

DC, please collect these inhouse ads in re-master digital releases! That costumed character in this image is supposed to be Francis Kane and a Black Dr Light (George ended up changing to a Japanese Dr Light in Crisis).

Marvel used George Perez's art in the Marvel Handbook: "Those were character design sketches I had done all the way back when I was doing the series, in 1974-1975. They are my work... but the fact that it’s definitely not new Perez work and nobody knows that to me seems a little deceptive."

Something about this letter 15-year-old Marv Wolfman sent DC in 1961 asking about Gardner Fox’s books outside of comics just warms my nerd heart.

Today’s random #bookshelf. Creator biographies!

Jack Kirby had the first 10 issues of Captain America Comics bound. He sketched on the endpapers and gifted the book to his wife, Roz, and I hereby declare this one of the coolest single items in the history of humankind.

Remembering JOHN ROMITA, SR., born this date 1930.

[The Monitor] was very, very regal looking. Horn braids for hair was something to give a totally different visual. Facially, he ended up being influenced by actor Torin Thatcher who played the villain in both THE SEVEN VOYAGES OF SINBAD and JACK THE GIANT KILLER

Happy Birthday (it was actually 1/17) to writer, editor Ann Nocenti. At Marvel she wrote Daredevil and edited New Mutants, Uncanny X-Men and The Defenders. Here Ms. Nocenti is w/ artist John Romita, Jr. signing for fans. Thank you, Ann! #comcis #comicbooks #Daredevil #XMen

Today is the birthday of artist Don Heck (Jan. 2, 1929-Feb. 23, 1995). Co-creator of Iron Man, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Mantis, Steel/Commander Steel, Nubia, & more.

John Romita - Marvelous!

Today is the birthday of Bill Woggon (Jan. 1, 1911-March 2, 2003), writer, artist, & creator of Katy Keene.

Today is the birthday of Jerry Robinson (Jan 1, 1922-Dec 11, 2007). An influential artist, most known as co-creator of the Joker and Robin, and for his work on Batman during the Golden Age. He was also a political cartoonist and an early advocate for creators' rights.

Jerry Robinson, BOTD 1922, was a foundational Golden Age creator who got his start in cartooning thanks to a chance meeting with Bob Kane at a summer resort that Jerry recalled for me in DIRECT COMMENTS: COMIC BOOK CREATORS IN THEIR OWN WORDS! www.paulkupperberg.net/product-page...

Sea Hag, one of Popeye’s most famous nemeses, first appeared in “Thimble Theatre” on December 27, 1929, though she was only glimpsed, as you see here. E.C. Segar was patient, as Sea Hag wasn’t clearly shown until February 1930.
