On this day in 1908, Lionel Leo Hampton was born to play the vibraphone, becoming one of the early, premier jazz performers on the instrument. His 1942 hit, "Flying Home," is, for me, the finest moment of jump blues. Take a listen, I dare you not to find yourself dancing. #OTD

On this day in 1946, Timothy James Curry was born to drop the formalities & take on the thespian mantle, having early, if cultlish, success as the transexual mad scientist Dr. Frank-N-Furter in 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' and then working steadily in all sorts of roles. #OTD

Many will choose to believe this action is evidence that our allies are “so called” and are really our adversaries. Yet they saw no reason to act this way as recently as 85 days ago. www.ft.com/content/20d0...

On this day in 1925, Rodney Stephen Steiger was born to act, building a career playing a string of memorable, offbeat, often slightly crazy characters as well as, improbably, singing a duet with Gordon McRae when he played Jud Fry in 'Oklahoma.' #OTD #cinema

I loved Vargas Llosa’s writing. It could be funny. It could be sad. It could be profound. The only thing it could never be is boring. Rest well dear Mario, you did good www.nytimes.com/2025/04/13/o...

For the first time I'm seeing the words "capital flight" applied to the US. Truly a banana republic moment, and not even 90 days in.

On this day in 1915, Theodore Roosevelt Taylor was born to become Hound Dog Taylor, the six-fingered, raunchy slide guitar player whose band, the Houserockers, kept Elmore James' style alive. It's said that Alligator Records was founded to record Hound Dog. ##OTD #Blues

There are things I miss about being in the City all the time. The people. The languages. The “didn’t-that-used-to-be …” always evolving streetscape. The ever-more-European public spaces. And then I encounter the $4 small cup of coffee.

On this day in 1929, Carl Adolf von Sydow was born to become Max von Sydow, the Swedish actor who appeared in more than 150 films & TV series, often as a villain, ranging from high art to Judge Dred. To me, he'll always be Antonious Block, the man who played chess w. Death. #OTD

In the shadow of Clem Burke's passing, we also lost one of the funkiest bass players to emerge from post-punk: Dave Allen of the Gang of Four and Shriekback. Those two will form one hell of a rhythm section. www.rollingstone.com/music/music-...
