ANNOUNCING A MAJOR NEW @empirepoduk.bsky.social SERIES: IRELAND & EMPIRE Episode One- COLONISING IRELAND: Henry VIII, Elizabeth I & The Tudor Conquest of Ireland With me and @willdalrymple.bsky.social and special guest Prof Jane Ohlmeyer. Out now.

All that now hangs in the balance. Join @willdalrymple.bsky.social and @anitaanand.bsky.social as they discuss the history and possible future of the Chagos Islands with Philippe Sands, barrister, writer and academic, who has been leading the repatriation case against the British government. 6/6

However In October last year, the UK and Mauritian governments reached a historic agreement to transfer the sovereignty of the Chagos Islands. 5/6

In the 1970s and 1980s, the expansion of the military base on Diego Garcia, one of the islands, meant a return of Chagosians seemed impossible. The UK-US military base has been shrouded in secrecy for decades.

What happened to the people who lived on Chagos after the British government used its unrestricted powers to forcibly displace them? And what might happen to them now? 3/6

The archipelago tells a story of imperialism. It was the last ever colony created by the British Empire. Enslaved people were brought to the Chagos Islands from Madagascar and Mozambique to work on coconut plantations under French and British rule. Labourers from India followed. 2/6

On a map they appear as specks in the Indian Ocean. The Chagos Islands have been in the news a lot lately.

Well this was unexpected and delightful. Vogue india just featured me, Shrabani Basu and Ira Mukhoty in their latest issue. How completely wonderful Women writing Women. www.vogue.in/content/thre...

Unlike earlier court art, which often left artists anonymous, Company School paintings are some of the first works where individual Indian painters were credited by name. Listen as William and Anita explore Lucknow as the centre for the start of Company School painting... linktr.ee/empirepoduk

But as much as these paintings were a product of imperialism, they also provided an unprecedented opportunity for Indian artists to leave a lasting impression.

šŸŽØšŸŒæNEW EPISODEšŸŒæšŸŽØ Out now on @empirepoduk.bsky.social Company School painting is a fascinating yet often overlooked artistic tradition that emerged during the British East India Companyā€™s rule in India...

The 211 th episode from the @empirepoduk.bsky.social is, in my book, the best so far. @willdalrymple.bsky.social and @anitaanand.bsky.social speak about Akbar and the empire he built; full of interfaith exchanges, creation of art. A beautiful world. podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/2...
