The reason why older generations burnt the shit out of their meat and boiled the shit out of their vegetables, was your kid died if you didn't. Medium rare steaks and roasted Brussels sprouts are a side effect of an intact food safety infrastructure

Nice to see this published by @nature.com. Their framing makes me think that eugenics is perhaps better conceived of as a tendency in scientific research rather than a particular school of thought; one that must be continuously guarded against even as specific eugenicist arguments come and go.

Happy World Penguin Day to all penguins, but especially Nils, who didn’t let living in Edinburgh (or being a penguin) stop him from becoming The Colonel-in-Chief of the Norwegian King’s Guard. He’s also been knighted. His official title is Brigadier Sir Nils Olav III and here he is looking regal af

“Hungary’s amended law appears to enable the use of real-time biometric surveillance at Pride events, which is an application clearly falling under the AI Act’s prohibitions,” said Italian social democratic European lawmaker Brando Benifei, one of the two architects of the EU’s AI Act.

The days of Google Docs are ending; we enter the age of Docs, made by France's Interministerial Directorate for Digital Affairs and Germany's Center for Digital Sovereignty of Public Administration. We need more governments to collaborate on public software projects to achieve digital sovereignty.

No matter how you voted in last year's election, no one voted to destroy the Postal Service. But the new administration plans to break up the Postal Service and sell it off to private corps. Here's what you need to know + how you can help save the public Postal Service.

AI solutionism is a faith-based religion and more people should reject it purely on that principle (instead of the softer arguments about how effective it is, the environmental cost, the labor cost, etc).

"We should be investing in movements, not just in metrics. In coalitions and cooperatives, not only in startups and scorecards. In relationships of care, community-based governance, and decolonial reparations—not just quarterly impact reports." Colonial sustainability is helluva drug. Esp in firms.

Most of the world’s population wants stronger climate action. They just don’t realize that they are a majority #Climate

Again, the chart below is circa 2023, but Francis has had the College of Cardinals (who vote for the next pope) stacked with his own choices for roughly a year and a half.

“I am pretty sure that if they (Hungary) felt they had the backing of the US, they would block (the rollover of sanctions against Russia),” said one senior EU official. “It would be huge: basically, it would put them not literally but virtually outside the union.”

BYOS shall be the new rule: bring your own salad. This is on top of the incredibly unhealthy food otherwise consumed by Americans, many of whom do not have options to grow salad on their window sills.

3 Green rapporteurs reflect on the role of the @europarl.europa.eu in the struggle to stop rule of law backsliding in Hungary. Interview by @eublogo.bsky.social @greens-efa.eu @ruitavares.bsky.social @greeneujournal.bsky.social

During Hungary’s EU presidency, Viktor Orbán’s government pushed visiting delegations to stay at Hotel Dorothea, a luxury hotel owned by Orbán’s son-in-law. One of the most striking cases was Finnish PM Petteri Orpo, whose delegation was redirected to the Orbán hotel despite having booked elsewhere.

According to a newly released court document, NSO Group’s Pegasus spyware was used in a 2019 hacking campaign to target a total of 1,223 WhatsApp users across 51 countries, including the Czech Republic and Hungary.

“…cops are paying a company to help them deploy AI-powered bots across social media and the internet to talk to people they suspect are anything from violent sex criminals all the way to vaguely defined “protestors” with the hopes of generating evidence that can be used against them.”

If law professors are unwilling to stand up for the rule of law and the most basic principles at the core of our constitutional order as sacrosanct, there is no point in teaching constitutionalism in law schools at all.

I’m sorry but if your students use AI to write papers and you use AI to grade them zero school is happening. You are running together on a hamster wheel

Reminder of global economic (& ecological) impact of US tariffs - deepening shift to S. America as a major ag commodity exporter as countries scramble to buy from anywhere but the US; already a premium on Brazilian soybeans; deforestation and ag chem use likely to rise. www.ft.com/content/3b10...

My book Democracy Under Strain is finally out, and I couldn’t be happier. 🥳 It’s been a long, challenging journey—but one that’s shaped me deeply as an academic. Here’s what it’s about 🧵 #DemocracyUnderStrain (1/11)

NEW: Spoke to 25 small publishers about the kind of impact Google's AI changes to search has had on their businesses. Things don't look good—not for the publishers, and not for the quality of information out on the open web, which ironically Google itself relies on. Gift link: bloom.bg/43Jmzk3

Notice how it's disproportionately the people who sew who understand that it's logistically well nigh impossible to on-shore manufacturing to the degree we'd need? And yet garment construction is undervalued as a skill with serious knowledge required because it's woman-coded.

Andrew Chen, co-founder of one of my favorite denim brands, 3sixteen, breaks down how the tariffs affect his company IG 3sixteen

Happy “Hands Off” protest day! Please read up on your rights. Stay calm! Don’t endanger yourself or others! #HandsOff

If you think this can’t happen, remember that of the 125,000 Japanese Americans who were interned during WWII for years without charge or trial, two-thirds were U.S. citizens. Including me.

When Nature does a photo roundup, it’s always worth a scroll. March’s edition is packed with mind-blowing REAL shots that capture the beauty, weirdness, and wonder of science 🧪—no AI needed. Case in point: this gorgeous shot of two courting crab spiders. Just one of many stunners. 💘

New research shows Israel's slaughter in Gaza has killed more journalists than the US Civil War, World Wars 1 and 2, the Korean War, the Vietnam war, the Yugoslav Wars, the Afghanistan War and the Ukraine War COMBINED. More: watson.brown.edu/costsofwar/p...

Hungary joins the outlaws.

The CDC has literally been gutted today. There’s no need for “April Fools” when reality is a nightmare for every human on this planet. Thousand of scientists fired. Entire departments erased. 1/

first the news of the killing of these aid workers. now the discovery that they and their vehicles were crushed and buried in a mass grave. horror upon horror. edition.cnn.com/2025/03/31/m...

This is so profoundly sad. Sad for science, sad for innovation, and sad for the country. Decades of knowledge will be lost and with it our lives will be worse off.
