We're recruiting for the role of Assistant Professor in Early Modern History, and seek to appoint a historian working on any aspect of the early modern world, excluding the Anglophone world (deadline 17 March 2025): durham.taleo.net/careersectio...

More of the approach that's never worked once in political history: screaming "we're racist!" at the far right in the vain hope that people *who despise you* will switch from more racist parties, without your horrified base switching to less racist ones. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Forever relevant in the age of social media. Thank you, Wendy Cope.

My favourite bit of teaching this course! I also made this Linear B graphic with @annapjudson.bsky.social ‘s help:

Bit of experimental Archaeology: making Linear B tablets in GCSE Classics with @annapjudson.bsky.social ‘s great ‘how were they made’ video and some plasticine!

Happy 5th of February to all who celebrate it youtu.be/WJBrAIVrK-4?...

This is such a great question that I think it deserves a whole thread. The cuneiform writing system included numbers, and we know how to say the names of many of these numbers in both Akkadian and Sumerian (languages that cuneiform was used to write). Let's start with Sumerian.

Poll for university teachers of beginners/intermediate ancient languages: how & how often do you do formative assessment of students' progress? i.e. not summative coursework/exams, but (e.g.) homework (marked by you/another tutor/peers/self/computer), in-class quizzes/tests, etc #AncientBlueSky

I will not post much on this topic, but I'm the Head of Ancient History and Religion at Cardiff University. Our staff and students are nothing short of amazing. Those who know me will know that I'm doing all I can.

This week my employer of 17 years English Heritage announced 200 jobs lost, and my Alma mater Cardiff Uni announced 400 jobs lost. The planning system that protects our heritage and provides thousands of archaeology jobs is at risk, and Higher Education is in free fall more generally #ThisIsFine

This is a national scandal. When will the government wake up and realise they are presiding over the rapid implosion of the UK's world-renowned university sector?

Solidarity with colleagues at Cardiff. This is horrifying.

Durham UCUs statement on the cuts announced today. durhamucu.org.uk/durham-ucu-s...

"Eventually, in the public sector context, a university will be left with a single administrative department, whose job it is to manage the massive cost implications of closing all the rest."

200 is a conservative estimate, assuming that more PSS staff on higher grades than lower grades go. We at @ducu.bsky.social will fight to protect the jobs and working conditions of members: durhamucu.org.uk/durham-ucu-s...

Oh, swears, ancient history is on here. The AH team at Cardiff are *amazing*, top of their field academics. It's one small part of a massive proposed butchering of the institution, after on-going cuts and horrors. I shall be waiting to see what support they think will be most beneficial.

Apparently Knowledge Commons is currently having issues so these links aren't working! But both papers are also @drodurham.bsky.social: durham-repository.worktribe.com/output/33420... and durham-repository.worktribe.com/output/33420...

Two new papers now available open access (both in the same edited volume!) 1: "Signs of the times?", in which Ester Salgarella & I explore & critique the use of palaeographic (handwriting) variation to date Linear A & B texts works.hcommons.org/records/sd1t... #AncientBluesky🏺
