Cultural heritage…

Yesterday was the 325th anniversary of the last magnitude 9 earthquake to hit Cascadia. In honor of this event, I’m not doing #MisconceptionMonday, and will instead talk about some steps you can take to be prepared for earthquakes.

This is good news for artists affected by #LAfires see emergency grant application here: www.cciarts.org It is a start. www.latimes.com/entertainmen...

There is so much need in LA right now - this initiative to restore Altadena is worth your attention. Every big thing starts with a small step. gofund.me/75ea14d8

Folks in LA who need N95 masks —

Sadly now news concerning loss of artist's studios and collections. We are likely to hear more about these losses as people begin to return to their homes and studios.

A small glimmer of #LAfires good news: most LAUSD schools are open today Monday 1/13, but several districts remain closed. How long those stay closed is a measure of how severe this has been. www.latimes.com/california/s...

Los Angeles friends, a trustworthy friend of mine passed along this list of resources for sharing — here’s hoping it gets you help you need. mutualaidla.org

Yes! These are urban fires *not wildfires* Planning / resource allocation has not accounted for ember transmission of the fire by high winds This hard truth has been known for decades - unfortunately we have not addressed reducing that risk in a meaningful way. We can do better - will we?

Disasters get summarized by casualties, buildings lost, and damage cost. Lives & Infrastructure are always first priorities Even before #LAfires have ended losses (~$150M US) rival all the losses of (~$140M US) from 2024 www.munichre.com/en/company/m... So obviously incredibly devastating 1/

Very thankful for friends in Culver City taking in my son and his roommates from UCLA. LA is an amazing place and people are helping each other - the way people actually respond in disasters Re: @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social writes about this in A Paradise Built in Hell bookshop.org/p/books/a-pa...

Art and culture make us human, and the impact of climate change on these facets of society do not garner enough attention. Artists’ entire collections of work up in flames, antique books lost to a flood, sled dog races canceled for lack of snow. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/10/u...

Highly recommend Watch Duty to get real information and noticiations about wildfires. www.watchduty.org

Agree and in the same situation. And to compound the fire issue - winter fires have been unusual - this is now a new normal.
