I always say you should never have language regrets, it’s just not worth it. But I do feel certain remorse for the fact that I was never introduced to Celtic languages, or indeed any of the other heritage languages of the islands. I had to discover them myself. #langsky

So Royal Cornwall Museum has rebranded with an English-only name. Why on Earth aren’t we putting our precious language front & centre of our national institutions (cf Kresen Kernow). And not a *single* word of Cornish on the website. Talk about wasted opportunity. Methus yn hwir! cornwallmuseum.org

Bouônjour bonnes gens! Aniet, ch'est 'La Journée du Paraplyie'! ☂️ Today is National Umbrella Day. Umbrella is 'paraplyie' en Jèrriais! The Jèrriais word for 'rain' is 'la plyie'. We also have: eune achie = a shower la brousse = drizzle eune dêcliaitchie = a downpour ☔ #Jèrriais #langsky

Gorthugher da, oll! Hedhyw yw Dydh an Lawlen! ☂️ Today is National Umbrella Day! ☔ Umbrella is Cornish is: glawlen glaw = rain 🌧️ lenn = cloth For grammar lovers: It takes a soft mutation after 'an' (the) because it is a feminine noun so becomes 'an lawlen' (the umbrella). #kernewek #langsky

Dydh da! (Good morning) Blue Skyers from Kernow 🙂 'Bronn Wenneli' (Swallow's Hill) First recorded as 'Brunwenely' c1200, the highest peak in Kernow. A beautiful, descriptive early Cornish language place name that has been Anglicised to a meaningless, and frankly abhorrent 'Brown Willy'.

Love it when local history overlaps my general interest in Celtic languages. Kent was home to the Cantiaci tribe when the Romans arrived, their capital being Durovernum Cantiacorum. The Isle of Thanet could be the inspiration for the Greek legend 'Ynys Thanatos'. www.bbc.co.uk/kent/content...
