A School Of Rock Band in Illinois covering Pere Ubu a decade ago. I’m bummed there’s no video of the Hearpen era band, but this IS a charming surrogate. Esp the girl handling lead guitar and the kid in shades having fun making Ravenstine synth sounds. youtu.be/cD7EA4supk0

Both had to Shazam “cool for the summer” and then realize I had NO idea what year it came out. “The Recent Past,” which basically means after 2009. Yeesh. Pop me not.

There’s lots of great albums produced by Roy Thomas Baker worth celebrating, but The Darkness’ One Way Ticket To Hell And Back might be my favorite. RIP. anthony-is-writing.ghost.io/my-favorite-...

Sometimes I think this was the most underappreciated and radical act by a musical artist in pop history.

I watched a 4+ hour Grateful Dead doc on Prime, and feel I better understand boomer utopian religiosity based around psychedelics & jazz-rock improvisation. That, plus blurbs for straight-to-Hulu horror franchise entries from 2022, in the blog post below… anthony-is-writing.ghost.io/grateful-dea...

I listened to every Destroyer album, hoping to find out whether or not I hate them. Find out if I did! anthony-is-writing.ghost.io/do-i-actuall...

Mouthed “no fuckin way” spotting Zach Cregger on Homicide: Life In The Street, about a decade before The Whitest Kids U Know hit IFC, more than twenty years before he directed Barbarian. I have no idea how it happened, but this show was truly casting magic.

RIP MICHAEL HURLEY. the great snock has made his last wish for a potato. he made this planet a much better place to live & i miss him already

Instead of an article about why a healthy media culture is valuable, or an article about how the lack of social infrastructure makes your career salad days ending now life or death, we get “I thought I’d be writing an article a year for Graydon Carter in my summer home.” The nyt, folks.

Thinking about playing every destroyer album back to back and seeing if I finally get past that dude sounding like The Hurdy Gurdy Man.

You know, you learn in college that LBJ would force people to have meetings while he went to the bathroom as a power/dominance move, and then you realize your child has forced you to stay in the potty with them for a full ten minutes.

Blurbs about Ash, Heretic, and some old stuff on Criterion. Also something tucked away on Netflix that Peter Weller fans should be sure to catch. anthony-is-writing.ghost.io/i-saw-ash-bl...

Blurbs about what I saw and what I’ll miss (including my favorite show ever?) after deciding to take a break from Netflix. anthony-is-writing.ghost.io/bye-netflix-...

I just realized that Marvel put out a crazy long epic psychedelic tale about the meaning of life and man and woman and philosophy with Aubrey Plaza more than FIVE YEARS before Francis Ford Coppola. Legion is over 20 hours long and the auteur SINGS over much of it. Do cineastes even know?
