shit you shouldn’t have to think about when dealing with a disaster #AbolishMutualObligations

The context that many (Americans) are missing is not only that there's a massive deadly cyclone about to hit Brisbane, but also that 18 food delivery riders have been killed on Australian roads since 2017.

This is the 2nd example we've seen in a week of a job agency caseworker grooming a person on their caseload. A person whose income they have all the power to cut off. The other case escalated to sexual assault. This rotten system must be urgently made voluntary. #AbolishMutualObligations

They’re happy with how it’s going, and seem more concerned about “provider viability” than whether people are being left without any money to feed and house themselves, about whether they’re putting people in danger of suicide or other misadventure. phonakins.com/2025/03/06/a...

Welfare recipients told to perform mutual obligations as Tropical Cyclone Alfred bears down on Queensland Disability employment provider Help asked jobseekers to perform telephone appointments before later clarifying they were voluntary www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...

“They completely omitted the fact that there is an exemption... Anyone in the system who has dealt with job providers would regard that as a mandatory requirement because that's how every mandatory requirement is presented to them. The providers are aware they hold all the power over participants,"

The latest NDIS quarterly report says “involving people with lived experience of disability is something money just can’t buy” umm yes it can: normalness.com/2023/06/08/w... I gotta finish all my posts on this topic because I despise the “pwd should do shit for free” approach.

Please let any friends and fam you have in SEQ with "mutual" obligations know about this.

🚨⛈️ BRISBANE AND SEQ: You do not have to do any activities or appointments for "mutual" obligations over the next week. If you are due to report your job search before 12 March, you do not have to submit any job applications or meet your points target. Stay safe ❤️

Thank you to anyone putting themselves out there on this. We all know it's been years of disappointment and very little results, however this feels like a point we can push on RN, so if you've the spoons, and are impacted by MOs: [email protected] (07) 5531 1033

Please share so #adelaide people can see this @antipovertycentre.org is holding an event tomorrow which is pretty important for those of us that climate change will hit the hardest

Jeremy Poxon: "It is remarkable how little thought the employment department has given to the serious harm this potentially illegal scheme is inflicting on the most disadvantaged communities in the country."

“There are 2,245 people – most of whom will be in extreme financial hardship – receiving a reduced payment due to application of the Targeted Compliance Framework. It is an absurd Kafkaesque nightmare…This has to end.” apcentre.substack.com/p/senate-est...

Imagine, if you will, a government that at least feels the need to be seen to *have* a child poverty strategy, let alone one that might deliver on it.

As we often say, the “safety net” is mostly gaping holes connected by string that’s either there to trip you up or slice you into pieces as you slip through.

Today there was an extraordinary spectacle in the senate, where the head of the employment department and minister Murray Watt told @pennyallmanpayne.com that they don't know if they're doing MOs lawfully, but can't stop it. Watch the exchange here from 6hrs 20mins: www.youtube.com/live/UzSlWLL...

Don't be misled by false claims that pensions are up. They've not gone up more than indexation for the last 3 years. The lowest payments (Jobseeker, Youth Allowance) got a whole extra $20 a week, but that's it phonakins.com/2025/02/01/w...

In light of everything happening, I wrote about how the KKK in the 1920s felt unstoppable, about the people that fought against them anyway, and about how fascism always fails. dansinker.com/posts/202…

Join us in a couple of weeks to talk about how poor people want to be talked about and why. RSVP: events.humanitix.com/talking-abou...

When I first got to Melbourne I was shocked at the obvious class divide in funding for public transport & it has not changed. The leafy private school suburbs have much better & more public transport than anywhere else, while the West has almost nothing. #Vicpol www.abc.net.au/news/2025-02...

“Back in your day” there were fewer scorching days. “Back in your day” there was little understanding of how sustained high temperatures affect kids’ learning and behaviour, let alone their health.

Queue Rishworth media release about the stunning generosity of this so-called payment increase.

A lot of people talk about poor people in ways that other and dehumanise us. Join us online on 11 March to hear about what we want to see more of, what we don’t, and how to overcome issues with media coverage of welfare recipients as we barrel towards an awful election campaign.

The year is 2025 and every artist, writer, musician, actor, everyone & every form of culture has been cancelled to protect Israel's genocide. Somehow we're still saying "this sets a dangerous precedent" when we are well beyond that, this is the ever-expanding silence that follows

#auspol ‘Provider viability’ what clap trap. ‘Vested interest’ or ‘captured govt’ more like. Shame on me for thinking Murray Watt was one of the better ones.

Brutal yet sharp analysis.

It must be said that this horrifying story is coming out in the context of ONGOING issues with the IT systems that led to a pause on "mutual" obligations that lasted til the end of January. Despite continued reports of problems, DEWR insisted on bringing penalties back. cc @squigglyrick.bsky.social
