Officially chosen in 1984, the snake symbolizes Asclepios—the ancient Greek God of Medicine, the Southern Cross celebrates our bi-national Society, and the canopy symbolizes the lungs while paying tribute to pioneering advances in mechanical ventilation and pulmonary care. #ANZICS50Years

In 1982, Intensive Care was formally recognized as a specialty in New Zealand! That same year, the Faculty of Anaesthetists invited ANZICS to join the Standards Committee to develop the ‘Minimum Standards for Intensive Care’. A huge milestone on our journey to excellence!

📅 ANZICS: 50 Years in 50 Days – Only 44 Days to Go! 📅 Flashback to 1981 when ANZICS was just 325 members strong. At our Annual Scientific Meeting, we honored our first President and co-founder by awarding the inaugural Matt Spence Medal to Dr Stephen Streat (ICU Registrar).

In 1980 Intensive Care was officially recognized as a specialty of both Anaesthesia and Internal Medicine in AUS. Prof Ken Hillman AO was the first person to pass the new intensive care examination with 0001 stamped on his fellowship certificate! #ANZICS50years

In 1978, ANZICS joined forces with organisations from the USA, UK, France, Switzerland, Mexico, and Israel to discuss the formation of the World Federation of Societies of Intensive and Critical Care Medicine. 🌍 Even in its early years, ANZICS was shaping the future of intensive care worldwide. 💡🏥

In 1977 ANZICS begins publishing regular newsletters to members in its quest to connect the intensive care community. In 1995, the newsletter became ‘The ANZICS Intensivist’, which today, continues to inform members with news, events and stories from across the sector. #ANZICS50Years

In 1976, ANZICS, RACS, and Critical Care Nurses came together to host Australasia’s first multi-disciplinary Intensive Care meeting. Fast forward to today, and the ANZICS ACCCN ASM is internationally recognized as one of the premier intensive care conferences in the world! #ANZICS50Years
