The Feb 27, 2010, M 8.8 Bio-Bio, Chile, #earthquake was caused by shallow thrust faulting along the Nazca and South America plates converging at 71 mm/yr. The fault rupture, over 100 km wide and nearly 500 km long, spread from 25 km deep, causing severe shaking and a tsunami. (1/3) #OTD ⚒🧪

Day 2 of sleuthing out scarps related to the 1863 EQ east of Waipawa with José from Chile 🇨🇱 . Sharp scarps and possible trench sites. Could a 15 m tension track in 1 scarp be a reflection of 1863?

This is how it is. こうしてこうですっ☆こうですっ☆

Awesome day in the field today chasing scarps related to the 1863 Waipukurau EQ with José Gonzalez-Alfaro. The EQ faulting eventually caused the avulsion of the Waipawa R in 1867

This week we dug a hand trench and augered a 2ndary rupture of the #1855 EQ near Lake Wairarapa. Thanks to Jose 🇨🇱 Joe n Paris. #eqnz

This is one of my all-time NPS visitor center favorite displays is in Death Valley. A simple wood block model showing how crustal extension and normal faulting can create the Basin and Range. Each edge of the block at the end of the motion is a mountain and the low spots are valleys.

In reality, the Nahua peoples who spoke of "Chalchiuhtlicueyecatl" didn't use that name for what's now the Gulf of Mexico. Instead, that name means "the Fresh Water of Chalchiuhtlicue," and it refers to her mansion in the midst of the cosmic sea, to the east the sea-ringed world. I'll explain. 1/

For the past few days, the seismic activity northeast of Santorini appears to be decreasing once again. Data from GEIN.🧪⚒️

Lassen Peak in northern California is the southernmost active volcano in the Cascade Range. The flanks of this mountain are littered with steaming fumaroles and boiling mudpots. Lassen Volcanic National Park, California, 04/26/2013. #NationalParks
