We tend to think of the underwater world as a quiet place. We think fish communicate with each other with body language displays like a betta. Or maybe the mouth-to-mouth battle like the grunts below. But we're wrong about underwater silence. Very wrong. So for #FishOfTheWeek let's talk noise 1/

Here's my federal funding story #WithoutNSF #SaveNSF #SupportNSF #scicomm 🧪

He's so ~ fancy ~

*screams in data witch* But seriously, I jokingly call myself a data witch *because* so many people seem completely unaware of the processes it takes to turn random crap someone wrote down into usable, valuable data. Eye of newt and pull of usethis.

When I read Eager by @bengoldfarb.bsky.social at the start of my beaver pond research, it changed the way I view wetlands, rivers, and the entire American landscape. It changed the scope of my entire project. I can't wait to see what this book brings

Am I eating dinner at 11:30? Yes. Was it worth it? Also yes

I'm making bolognese for dinner tonight, but my chronic fatigue made me take an accidental 4 hour nap in the middle of the afternoon. So now I'll be eating my dinner at 10pm. This is an great example of why people with chronic illness struggle to cook for themselves

Coelacanth alert! Look how gorgeous this #FishArt is!

It's #FishArt made by a fish (all credit to the white-spotted pufferfish)

You'd think other animals would look at us and think "I'm not gonna do all that" but I guess there's idiots in every group because our #FishOfTheWeek is one step away from having a 9-5 they hate and they don't even seem to realize it. I'm talking about mudskippers, of course 1/4

On May 1st in 2019, I was completing my very first day of field work in beaver ponds in Alabama. And Widgeon Pond gave me a great introduction. A beautiful pond on a sunny day and a giant alligator snapping turtle accidentally caught in our net! It was released unharmed and left me a great memory

My painting process TIDAL WETLANDS

Should we make Hello From The Herbarium a thing?? Thank you @nybg.bsky.social for letting me play in the orchid collections! (I think this also counts as an #invertefest post thanks to Xanthopan morganii praedicta's co-starring role)

These pins are a delight

How can zombie microbes interact with the Earth system? 🦠🧟🌎 Microbes, even when dormant, play a massive role in shaping Earth's ecosystems & biogeochemistry 🌎 In @natcomms.nature.com I explore dormancy in the context of Earth’s geosphere-biosphere co-evolution 🧵👇 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

To complement my daily and monthly air temperature graphics, I’ve added a new visualization of daily global mean sea surface temperature (SST) to my climate indicators page. It updates in near-real time. Follow along at zacklabe.com/climate-chan...

If you thought a volcano was a weird place for fish to call home, I can promise you it gets weirder. Meet the pearlfish, a tiny, unassuming little fish that is the absolute worst roommate. This #FishOfTheWeek is gonna be uncomfortable 1/5

Water mites man. They're just so...well, look at him

Are catfish the cutest fish in the water? YES #FishArt

It's not a fish but look how cute it is!

Ancient fishes are the best fishes and I will not hear any other opinions

We could've had tranquil lives as [redacted], lounging without a care in the world in the organo-silica ooze of the Paleoarchean seabed. But no, you lot had to do evolution. So now, Monday morning, and tech bros are a thing. Thanks, mitochondria, the power house of messing everything up.

Perfection. 10/10 no notes #FishArt

regular reminder that we can trace features of autism through folklore back to like, the prehistoric era. the fuck do you think ‘changelings’ were

An app called fathomverse that let's me identify neat little deep-sea creatures?! SIGN. ME. UP.

They may not be fish, but they're still cool as hell

I'm so ready for more graboids. Truly one of my favorite movies
