Freshwater shrimp as macroconsumers - these are pictures of our study stream in Puerto Rico where shrimp are dominant. Only 20 days of exclusion and the difference between control and exclusion are rather clear. Shrimp maintain tiles clean of sediment, with little algae, and few insects! πŸ§ͺ

Converge freshwater science series! Joining freshwater scientists from across the triangle area to discuss ideas in a safe, collegial atmosphere monthly. Thank you NCSU for hosting the January meeting! And thank you to @ardonlab.bsky.social and other presenters for leading discussions.

Sharing a passion for freshwater science- We spent an evening meeting people from different institutions in NC that work in aquatic ecosystems and talking about freshwater ecosystems This was part of the "Converge Freshwater Science Series" hosted at #NCSU @ardonlab.bsky.social @agdelv.bsky.social

Enjoying our tropical river, while doing some sampling too. πŸ§ͺ #tropicalstreams #ecology #streams

Read about our team member Mariely in this note from Macrolatinos! www.macrolatinos.net/2025/01/nota...

Learning about tropical streams with our team. Our techs in Puerto Rico shared a day with students and faculty from Mount Mercy Univ., who visited the forest to learn about our project and rainforest ecology. It was a fun day as well, including a stop in Sonadora to search for freshwater shrimp!

Perithemis domitia (Libellulidae) from Puerto Rico. An inhabitant of urban environments, able to deal with some pollution. This is the only species of Perithemis in Puerto Rico. #photo #photography #entomology #odonata #dragonfly

Starting a new semester full of ecology at #NCSU!

Happy New Year to all! Our lab is ready to continue working on our long-term projects, start new experiments and dissertation chapters, and continue sharing stories on social media. We'll keep you posted! #NCSU #HappyNewYear

Safety first! Ribbed bars are very useful to anchor things in our stream studies. However, they are also a safety hazard. Safety caps or something similar are always useful to avoid major accidents.

A great thanks giving day for our lab. Celebrating one candidate and two PhDs. πŸ₯‚πŸ¦ƒ

Congratulations to Mariely on successfully defending her dissertation. Now Dr. Mariely Vega GΓ³mez! Dissertation title: "The role of stream geomorphology in mediating tropical macroinvertebrate responses to climatic and hydrological extremes"

Congratulations to Ana M. Meza-Salazar on successfully defending her dissertation. Dr. Meza-Salazar now! Dissertation title: "Surface-groundwater interactions in a changing climate: impacts of acidification and phosphorus enrichment on tropical stream macroinvertebrate assemblages" #NCSU

Water sampling: from the field in La Selva Research Station in Costa Rica to the lab at NC State! @ardonlab.bsky.social

A week of professional development. Last week, some of our lab members participated in two important meetings. Vamery attended the Institute on Teaching and Mentoring. Roberto was in Phoenix participating in SACNAS. Congratulations to both!

Team work! We are studying shrimp movement in response to changes in stream water level in Puerto Rico. Sharing some pictures of our team doing fieldwork! This mark-recapture study is in collaboration with prof. Rolando Santos (Florida International Univ.) and prof. Omar Perez (Univ. Puerto Rico).

Long-term sampling in tropical urban streams- Last summer we made another team effort to complete one more sampling event in our long-term monitoring of urban streams in Puerto Rico. Also collected snails for a different project. There are lots of Thiaridae in our urban streams!

Science Communication Workshop. This week learned about the importance of communicating our scientific work to the public. Some key points: start with the main point/message, avoid scientific jargon, and of course, use some cool pictures and videos! Thank you, Michelle Jewell !!

Learning about project organization using visualization tools. We learned the importance of conducting scientific research and having a good understanding of how parts of projects are linked together to achieve an overall goal. Thanks to Mariely Vega for offering the workshop to our REU students!

El Verde REU 2024 proposal presentations Our REU students presented their summer projects. They presented various plans and ideas, from flow reduction to macroinvertebrate assemblage. It was a great opportunity to learn about their diverse topics and different approaches to their experiments.

First Hike to Prieta conquered! We finally got to the El Verde Field Station and learned about the trail to Prieta, Tabonuco trees, Ortiga, and Palo de Cristal. We saw the SteamFRE project site and learned from Rafa about the electric exclusion project.Β  We are excited to begin our research!

We are having a great time at #2024SFS! Some of our lab members and collaborators already presented their work, the rest will be presenting soon. Great conversations about stream ecology, tropical ecosystems, and the effects of temperature and climate change.

Here's a list of presentations by our lab and collaborators at #2024SFS. We are looking forward to reconnecting with all our friends and making new ones!

This week we participated in the LTER Luquillo meeting. We learned about the different long term projects and future plans of the LTER. #ElVerde_REU #LUQLTER

We are ready to participate in the annual meeting of the Society for Freshwater Science! #2024SFS @freshwater-science.bsky.social

We are ready for another fun summer studying tropical ecosystems at El Verde Field Station, Puerto Rico. Stay tuned for posts on our summer activities! #ElVerde_REU

Hiking #ElYunque is awesome, but the legs scream at the end of the day! Thanks to Kevin & Nicole for downloading data from our temperature sensors in the forest (and for the pics).
