🏺 In 2021 a metal detectorist made the find of a lifetime in Melsonby, Yorkshire (#UK). Luckily, he contacted experts at the University of Durham who, in collaboration with the British Museum and Historic England, excavated what is now known as The Melsonby Hoard. 1/

🏺 A Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age settlement was excavated in the Hauts-de-France region ahead of construction of a Business Park in Onnaing, north of #France, by INRAP. 1/

🏺 Last year a 200 yo message in a bottle was found in an excavation in #France. This time, a time capsule was found during the re-excavation of a #Viking burial mound in #Norway. The note was written by Anders Lorange in 1874 and included his business card!

🏺 A team from the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) found remains of at least 5 mammoths, stone tools and evidence of ivory processing in an excavation at Langmannersdorf an der Perschling, Lower #Austria, dating back to 25,000 years ago. #Archaeology #Palaeolithic #Austria

🏺 Archaeology often gives us glimpses of the lives of people of high status in the past. But what about all the others? A recent study revealed the harsh conditions that miners faced during the Ptolemaic period in #Egypt, during the 3rd century BCE. 1/

🏺 Archaeologists of the Univ of Warsaw found 5 clay figurines on the top of a pyramid in San Isidro, El Salvador, buried c.400 BCE. The figurines have holes on the top of their heads and necks allowing them to turn them side to side. Researchers suggested they are puppets or marionettelike figures

A bog body found in #Ireland, previously thought to be a male, has actually been confirmed to be female. Evidence shows her throat was slit and she was decapitated before being thrown into the bog sometime between the 4th and 1st century BCE. Researchers believe she may have been a human sacrifice.

Archaeologists in #Kazakhstan unearthed more than 1000 artefacts from burial mounds (known as kurgans) in the Atyrau region, including jewelry, weapons and ceramics. The finds date to the 5th century BCE. Experts believe these may be the burials of high-status individuals or Sarmatian royalty. 🏺
