A bog body found in #Ireland, previously thought to be a male, has actually been confirmed to be female. Evidence shows her throat was slit and she was decapitated before being thrown into the bog sometime between the 4th and 1st century BCE. Researchers believe she may have been a human sacrifice.

Archaeologists in #Kazakhstan unearthed more than 1000 artefacts from burial mounds (known as kurgans) in the Atyrau region, including jewelry, weapons and ceramics. The finds date to the 5th century BCE. Experts believe these may be the burials of high-status individuals or Sarmatian royalty. 🏺

*** WARNING: HUMAN REMAINS *** Evidence for cannibalism was identified in Somerset (#England). At least 37 Early Bronze Age (c 2500–1500 BCE) individuals were found with evidence of violent deaths and consumption. Mixing of remains w/ animal bones was seemingly intentional, to dehumanize victims.

The Archaeological Institute of #Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS) found a 7000 year-old settlement ahead of construction of Prague road near Nupaky in Central Bohemia. They uncovered 8 columnar structures, storage pits, polished stone artefacts. The site includes a village from the Halstatt period. 🏺

A Bronze Age sword was recovered from a bog in eastern hashtag#Denmark. The style of the weapon suggests it was made within the Hallstatt culture, to the south and later brought into the region. Before deposited into the bog, it was bent into an "S" shape, making it unusable.

A team of the University of Udine found a 6th century BCE shipwreck off the coast of #Sicily, #Italy alongside 6 anchors of different periods. The shipwreck provides evidence for maritime trade and cultural exchanges between Greeks and Phoenicians. #Archaeology 🏺

Sometimes #Archaeology brings us close to individuals and specific events. This is the case of excavations in Glen Coe, Scotland, which unveiled new insights into the lives of members of Clan MacDonald killed by government troops on 13th February 1692, in what became known as the Glencoe Massacre. 🏺

INRAP excavated a #Roman domus of c. 2nd century CE on the outskirts of Durocortorum, #Roman Gaul, modern day Reims (France). Bronze statuettes and fragments of frescoes were found, showcasing the wealth of local elites and cultural connections between the provincial capital and the metropolis. 🏺

The Færeyinga Saga (1200CE) says the #Viking Grímur Kamban settled the #FaroeIslands c.872-930 CE. The origin of these people was thought to be similar to Icelandic settlers. A new genetic study suggests they were a diverse group of male settlers from across Scandinavia, distinct to the Icelandic.🏺

A wreck found in 2013 near the town of Malindi, off the coast of #Kenya, could have been part of a flotilla that accompanied the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama 500 years ago in his last expedition, and be one of the earliest European shipwrecks in the Indian Ocean. #Archaeology 🏺
