Where @schwarz.bsky.social goes, mordant laughter follows

It's almost funny (ok, it's not at all funny) how when Biden was president, Republicans kept suing Biden and executive agencies on grounds they were exceeding their authority under the law. Now, when Trump and DOGE aren't merely trying to interpret the law, but blatantly disregarding it, <crickets>.

I love this. This should be the symbol of the new rebel coalition.

I don’t think that’s very clear at all. Trump and his Nazi billionaire friend are trying to destroy government of the people, by the people, and for the people. Anyone still on their side doesn’t want to work with you ever again. And the people who are on your side want you to stand in their way.

the only reason I still have my FB page is so that it can remind me of bad decisions we collectively make.

As someone who has reported on AI for 7 years and covered China tech as well, I think the biggest lesson to be drawn from DeepSeek is the huge cracks it illustrates with the current dominant paradigm of AI development. A long thread. 1/

Excellent post

Updated list of companies committed to DEI Costco, Meijer, Kroger, Giant Grocery, Ben & Jerry’s, Ulta, Macy’s, Old Navy, Nordstrom’s, TJ Maxx, GoTo Foods (includes Moe’s Southwest Grill, Mcalister’s, Auntie Anne’s, Jamba, Cinnabon, and more…), Dollar Tree, Walgreens, Wegmans

After Trump ordered the US to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, Bloomberg Philanthropies and other U.S. climate funders announced that they will “ensure the United States meets its global climate obligations.” www.reuters.com/sustainabili...

No notes.

Let's be clear about what's happening. Trump is freeing the violent paramilitary wing of his movement from prison in order to: 1) demonstrate that violence committed in service of his objectives will go unpunished, and 2) facilitate future acts of violence in service of his regime.

Is anyone else's mental jukebox endlessly looping a revised refrain from @themountaingoats.bsky.social "This Year" - "I am gonna make it through these next four years if it kills me"?

I wrote a review of A COMPLETE UNKNOWN: the brand new Bob Dylan bio pic. And I guarantee you it is totally unlike any other critique of the film that you are ever going to run in to. merrillmarkoe.substack.com/p/a-complete...

Just read the response from Costco to shareholders requesting it back down from DEI. It was glorious. It begins "Our Board has considered this proposal and believes … an enterprise rooted in respect and inclusion is appropriate and necessary." and gets better. A happy investor #diversityandinclusion

Here's the truth: Elon Musk doesn't want any restrictions on his investments in China, and that's why we're on the brink of a government shutdown. This is the first scandal of Trump's second term, and it'll look like a lot of the others: putting personal financial interests above the country's.

Amazing albums from the '10s, 1/n - "England Keep My Bones" by Frank Turner.

This year, 10 U.S. billionaires gained $787B in wealth. That's nearly 4X more than the $214B earned annually by all 3.2M U.S. public school teachers combined. In fact, more wealth went to a *single person* than to all teachers combined. Is that fair? This is what extreme wealth costs society.

Amazing albums from the '90s, 1/x - "Rumor and Sigh" by Richard Thompson.

Also yes this. If you don’t run the “are we even civilized any more?” piece when children get shot in their classrooms you forfeit the moral right to run that piece when one health care CEO is killed.

My response for my client @oliviaoftroye.com to President Trump's nominee for Director of the Federal Bureau Of Investigation (#FBI) #KashPatel's threat of a forthcoming defamation lawsuit. #RightBackAtYa

Did you know that every French parking lot is going to be covered with solar panels? That Indonesia said it will close down its coal plants? That Nest is building a giant 'virtual powerplant' in Texas There are things to be thankful for, even in Nov 2024 billmckibben.substack.com/p/tart-but-s...

I was listening to an interview with Ayana Elizabeth Johnson a few days ago who said we need more stories in Hollywood depicting a solutions oriented future beyond dystopia. My first thought: Star Trek’s been there this entire time. Gene Roddenberry+ have given us a lot on which to build.

"In the Republic of Gilead's dystopian future, men and women perform the services assigned to them." This is the summary of "The Handmaid's Tale" in the NYT bestseller list. See my essay on the ramifications of this language's precision without accuracy. snyder.substack.com/p/men-and-wo...

"What I Saw on the Campaign Trail." These two paragraphs — by John Avlon, a former journalist turned Democratic candidate in New York's 1st Congressional District— come closer to describing legacy media's portion of the blame than just about anything I have read. www.thebulwark.com/p/what-i-saw...
