How do I know that I am hiring the right person? Julia (incoming grad student in my lab) and I are hitting the maximum writing productivity hour on Sunday! Two time zones: Julia (EST, ~9pm) and me (PST; ~6pm).

(1/3) Starting of a new research project is all about possibility. Soon, we hit many roadblocks and it seems the same project is all about problem. It feels like pushing a giant stone everyday and there is no visible progress. www.ashraflab.com/philosophy.h...

Happy birthday!!! www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio...

Watching fission yeast divide is cool🦠. But showing it with a kymograph? Even cooler 😎, shows it all—mitosis, cell wall—packed into spatiotemporal magic🪄. Flattening time into 2D just makes it easier to understand. #FluorescenceFriday @pasteur.fr @pasteuredu.bsky.social #Microscopy #Microbiology🔬

(1/3) I work and interact with so many talented researchers, starting from 20-years-old-undergrad to 70-plus-retired-professors, routinely. Once I started running the lab, I realized I need to train people not only for EXPERIMENT, but also for other things.

This is great! Thanks to @naascarabidopsis.bsky.social for having awesome panelists!

I took the first stab with our newly setup Leica Stellaris at the Bioimaging facility 🍀🔬 The image was taken with multi photon and we can reach to the deeper tissues easily without losing much details.

This is one of the most thought-provoking cell division papers! Brilliant! Interphase cell morphology defines the mode, symmetry, and outcome of mitosis @science.org www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

@science.org has a new print design and a beautiful cover featuring the mathematics of rose petals

Happy Birthday to us! And thank you to all the amazing scientists and people in our group! We are incredibly lucky and privileged being able to accompany you on the science journey and making memories for life. 🌾🌱

Our paper is just out www.nature.com/articles/s41... from the Jacobsen, Doudna, and Banfield labs on viral delivery of a tiny CRISPR system for transgene free germline editing in plants, tinyurl.com/3k223r3x. Looking for postdocs to join the team for the next phase of this work!

Redid my #pollen composition after detecting edges on Fiji. Very happy with the final result . Fun fact, I just got to @mblscience.bsky.social for @aqlm.bsky.social and spring is just springing here. My #allergies are back 🤧 #microscopy #bioart #sciart #flowers #botany #plantscience #microcosmos

NAASC is excited to host Dr. Stefan DeFolter, Dr. Nayelli Marsch, and Dr. Stewart Gillmor on June 6 to learn their Plant Biology Story! Join the June 6th webinar to learn about 3 plant biology faculty at CINVESTAV-IPN in Irapuato, Mexico Register now at www.arabidopsiscommunity.org/mpbs

Here is the very first look at the COMPLETE CELL CYCLE (C3) marker for plants, envisioned by our lab. We have combined PCNA1 (G1, early & late S, G2) and TUB2 (PPB and mitotic steps). The image quality was deemed to reduce the file size to share in X and BlueSky.

It's official that I love UBC! Because, the partnership with UBC saved 4,810 USD of open access fee for our recently accepted Current Opinion in Plant Biology article! We also saved 3920 USD for our Cytoskeleton article! UBC helped me to save total 8,730 USD!

🌾 One week until registration deadline 🌾 Join us in stunning Monte Verità in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland for what will be a great meeting on grass biology. Fantastic line-up www.brachypodium2025.org/speaker2 & a great community Register until May 5 www.brachypodium2025.org/registration

Join us for an exciting Student Symposium workshop featuring Molly Edwards, PhD @science-irl.bsky.social. It's an interactive workshop on science communication, focused on short-form video production. May 13th 11am EDT. More information & registration link here rootandshoot.org/planting-the...

This morning, I had to prepare UBC-formatted-CV and submit as an annual report. While making the CV, I have realized that my effort is extremely POLARIZED to research. In coming years, I have to figure out how to tackle many other roles and responsibilities.

I missed the opportunity to meet Liwen Jiang last week during his visit at UBC. Here is a recent paper on beautiful electron tomography of vacuole from his lab published this week @theplantcell.bsky.social academic.oup.com/plcell/artic...

Two more reviews from this year's Growth and Development issue of Current Opinion in Plant Biology now online. Check them out! 🌱🪵🌬️🧬

This book, On The Shortness of Life by Seneca, is very short, but will have a long impact on how we look at the life! I mostly share research articles here. But, I believe our generation, including scientists, need to understand stoicism more than ever!

🧬My retrospective chromatin review is out @Proc Jpn Acad: doi.org/10.2183/pjab... The textbook view of #chromatin as 30-nm fibers is fading. A new paradigm: chromatin forms #liquid-like domains—locally dynamic, yet globally stable at the chromosome level (viscoelastic)—supporting genome function. ✨

I’m so happy to share my official tenure!! Super grateful to my amazing research team (past & present), all the letter writers, my mentors, and the cheerleaders who helped me achieve this career goal 💯🌽🍾🤓 www.provost.iastate.edu/faculty-succ...

In the past 3 weeks, we received some valuable comments and suggestions from colleagues on our preprint. We have revised, re-explained, and adjusted some figures. Thanks. Please, find the updated version (v2) available online now! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Resumed culturing BY2 cells this week in the lab. Thanks to Andrei Smertenko for culturing and maintaining them while I was moving the lab.

Could not be more proud of Bella and her well deserved recognition as a leader in climate research! Bella is an incredible scientist and person who we are so fortunate to know and work with!

We have a postdoc position that just opened up in the Brady lab on reprogramming tomato root system architecture in response to changes in nutrient availability - please consider applying! recruit.ucdavis.edu/JPF07095

1/4 Great to see this preprint focusing on #stress_recovery! A reminder that #recovery isn’t just an afterthought—it’s an essential part of #stress response in #plants. The authors show that recovery dynamics vary with the type of abiotic stress. doi: doi.org/10.1101/2025...

Life of a grad student! Olivia @ohazel.bsky.social 5:00 am, waiting to catch a return flight after attending the conference, and grading for her TA!

It was a great day visiting the Japanese Tea Garden and the California Academy of Science in SF today. Olivia took this hilarious picture of me explaining and simulating the right-handed-twisting in the tree behind me.
